I will stop my threads that do not have to do with Diplomacy. However, I will continue to start threads that are legitimate questions and suggestions. Also, I will post on threads when/if appropriate. Kestas, don't ban me for starting this thread; I just wanted to announce my new policy.

Free Book!!
I have a pdf copy of "how non-violence protects the state" by peter gelderloos
I think this is a very informative book and I am willing to share it, eager even.

if you want a copy let me know and I can email it to you
Sicarius (673 D)

hey this book is 15$ new
and I want to give it to you free
because it has good information

and because I love stealing other peoples ideas that they try to sell and give them away for free.

I'm like robinhood, except I probably shower less and I would kill the sheriff not let him go
If that's your aim, it seems like it'd be more efficient to put it up on the Pirate Bay or something.

I'll pass on the book for now. I'm interested in the 70-hour phases game that you started, though. Are you worried by the player who started a profile less than a week ago and dumped all 100 points into your game?
Sicarius (673 D)
31 Dec 08 UTC
I'm not too worried about it right now. I'll just see how it develops. you want to play?

if you reconsider on the book let me know ok teach?
I'll think about the game. There is still some time before it closes. If someone beats me to it, so be it.

As for the book, I usually get some pleasure reading in during the summer. I just tread water during the school year.

What is it that makes the book worth reading? You haven't said much about it other than that its 'informative'.
Sicarius (673 D)

it's called "how no-violence protects the state"
and thats pretty accurate descriptor
Archonix (246 D)
01 Jan 09 UTC
Yes, I understand what its about. But what did you gain from reading it? Is it well written? Is it a series of straw-man arguments against peaceful demonstations? Is it well researched? Will I only find it interesting if I intend to participate in violent protests?
alamothe (3367 D(B))

spyman (424 D(G))
02 Jan 09 UTC
Hey Sicarius I got your book. I sent you some reading material too. Maybe you didn't get my email.
I have read the first chapter. He makes some valid points. For example, he points out the threat of violence from some groups in India during the fight for independence made the British more inclined to want to deal with Gandhi, as he represented an alternative. Had that threat never existed then perhaps the British have not been so concerned or so interested in dealing with Gandhi.
This does not mean I agree with violence by anarchist groups in America.
spyman (424 D(G))
02 Jan 09 UTC
alamothe, the book does not say that non-violence is a bad thing. The author argues that it should not be considered the only option. His ideas about violence are not that radical. Most governments operate according to similar principles. What was that Teddy Roosavelt said? "Speak softly and carry a big stick"
The question that anarchists have to ask themselves though, is it going to be an effective strategy for them. Most times when protest groups get violent (in Australia anyway) it does not help the further their aims. Rather it serves to further alienate the mainstream.
Chrispminis (916 D)
02 Jan 09 UTC
I think the lack of efficacy of most protests and various alternative causes stems mostly from the fact that nearly all of their functions are based around promoting "awareness". People love awareness. I'm sure that awareness is indeed important, but I think that more emphasis should be placed on action rather than awareness... But I don't think that the action needs to be violent, it just needs to be action. The efficacy of action doesn't inherently depend on whether it's violent or not, there are many other factors, and I think the accuracy of the action is a big one.

To paraphrase something I read somewhere... We can all be very aware and pack all of our garbage into sorted and neat little containers and park it out on the curbs but the neighbourhood's cleanliness depends on the garbage man in the end. If he doesn't come around to pick up the garbage no amount of coming together for "awareness" is going to get the place any cleaner. You have to take action and address the garbage man or get someone else to be the garbage man.

If you want a corporation to devote 3% of their profits to developing more environmentally friendly practices you have to bring the issue to them. You can't just hand out pamphlets to people who won't read them. You have to go to the corporation and tell them what you tangibly plan to do to encourage them and what you're going to do if they don't. Sometimes it will be legal, sometimes it will be legal, sometimes it will be violent, sometimes it won't, sometimes it will require playing a part in the system, sometimes it requires being an outsider but it will be efficacious. That's not to say efficacy is the number one priority...

Non violence is effective when the people acting are useful and not just nuisances. Violence won't even be that effective if you're not that useful... not unless you plan to use a lot. Sic, if a bee stings you, do you swat it? Or do you bend to it's will? What if a small dog bites you? What if a fucking gorilla grabs you? I don't think the anarchy movement is a gorilla at this point, I'm not even sure that it's a small dog... So I'm not sure how well you think this violence thing is going to work for your cause...

hey spyman can you give me say... 5 examples of american anarchists being violent

I havnt checked my email yet I'll do that.

Sicarius, sorry I didn't mean to sully the good name of anarchism in America. I was responding to the book you suggested I read which advocates violence. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't seen to be endorsing this view.

Okay five violent american anarchists. Here is a small sample:

Leon Czolgosz who assasinated President William McKinley
Theodore Kaczynski, the unibomber (many of his ideas could be considered anarchist).
Luigi Galleani, leader of the violent anarchist group known as the Galleanists, who were responsible for a series of bombings in 1919.
Emma Goldmen and who is considered one of the founders of North American Anarchism.
Ashanti Alston of the Black Panthers, who is also known as the @narchist panther.

Plus there are plenty of radical groups who may not have been necessarily avowed anarchists per say but perhaps share similar ideas such as the Weathermen and the Symbionese Liberation Army.

Two new games - 101 and 75 points each to join
Two new PPSC games:
101 points to join game ID 7740 (The End of the World As We Know It) - 36 hour turns
and
75 points to join game ID 7741 (“I do think you have to talk to enemies&rdqu) - 24 hour turns (the name for this latter game was intended to be a General Petraeus quote, “I do think you have to talk to enemies" - Petraeus... but apparently a quote followed by a dash translates into gibberish).
