Can play this game too?

In solemn declaration, I myself personally hereby vow to sesquipedalianise and, through such verbositisation, expose the inverse correlation linking the challenged status of my clarityism, maturityism, originalitysm and hopeless belief in the misuse of abstract noun-strings (ismtyism) to that of my interlect...

Please do not respond. I promise not to add to this thread.

I really will.

I might start another thread though.

the global food crisis
what do you think are it's causes, and what are some possible solutions?

also what role do you think biofuels play in the crisis
fwancophile (164 D)

biofuels play the role of necessary technological development.

I've got an idea, Hiawatha.

Why don't you pen your mighty manifesto, leave it at your feet, kill yourself, and end all of your nasty consuming. This way, you can help to alleviate the world's food shortage by not eating any more of it.

Just a thought.

It involves international affairs and governments.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
yes thats true. I guess i was looking at it from a diff angle, such as overpopulation, biofuels, climate change, rather than the policies of governments, but you're right

Shortage? What shortage? I got all the food I need.
FreeSample (160 D)

The US should stop the production of biofuel from corn. Brazil produces ethanol from sugarcane, which is WAY more efficient. Let's just use the corn to eat. the starving people will thank us.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
Well, Sicarius, I know from earlier that one of your big beefs with consumer-capitalism was it's exploitation of our resources beyond Earth's carrying capacity. I wouldn't be worried if I were you, because the Earth's carrying capacity can take care of itself. We'll starve... =)

Obviously, if we want to save the 6 billion some souls on this poor ball, then we can all expect a lower standard of living in Western countries, to average out consumption. I don't know how quickly North America will be to give up it's luxuries though...

It's a sad state of affairs really. I blame ethanol, but not environmentalists. The fact is, we need new agricultural or industrial revolution. Otherwise, the population will control itself... environmental homeostasis.

Well, reverting to hunter-gathering lifestyles would certainly result in mass starvation. =)
Jerkface (1626 D)

I'm with BoG75 on this one. Honest selfishness is the best solution.
menace3society (927 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
The food crisis is borne of primarily one thing, and that is the unwillingness of most needy countries to accept food from the United States that cannot be guaranteed as not having been genetically modified.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
What? I don't think that that would contribute that much... It's not like the US has all the food in the world anyways, it's not about not accepting food from the US. It's primarily that the global population and our rate of consumption has outstripped our rate of production of basic foods. Without another technological revolution in agriculture, our population is unsupportable with our current means of production. America's population is unsupportable with it's current local produce, it relies on importing food from countries all over the world. Canada doesn't have as much viable farmland as America, thanks to it's latitude, but it's population is also 10x less. But in the end, it might be the attitude and habit of consumption that pushes us into the food deficit. South America is rapidly cutting down rainforests to free up farmland to support it's population growth, and China is doing the same, though it has a ridiculously disproportionate population for it's area of viable farmland. Anyways, the problem is fairly global, and it's mostly consumption outstripping production.
Jerkface (1626 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
So it sounds like cannibalism is the obvious choice here. I mean, if our population gets too big for our food then if we simply make our population BECOME our food: problem solved!
Stephen V (345 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
And I do not see how a discussion of consumption vs production is a politically charged discussion. Chrispminis has touched on the situation rather eloquently. This, in my opinion is an economic crisis more than it is a political.

With the North American economy tanking big time if people all started shopping smarter instead of shopping more then I feel a lot of the problems within the world would see a big change. It's not some grand solution that will solve this problem but all of us doing the little we can. The solution to these problems isn't out there but in each of our hands.
Chrispminis (916 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
Well Stephen... the problem is definitely economic in nature, but economics and politics are inexorably linked. The politics is sure to follow. Many questions arise, especially in the face of nationalist interests.

For example, with America's immense buying power, and China's seeming disregard for it's own people and their standard of living, America can probably afford to keep itself well-fed for quite some time by buying rice and other food products from China and any other country greedy for American green. Unfortunately, the rest of the people in the country that aren't selling food to richer people will likely starve as a result.

The simple stratification of classes mean that barring a major "peasant" revolt, the rich will starve the poor by outbidding them on the limited food sources... Unless government should intervene on this action, seize food products and distribute them equally? Or prevent exportation of local food products? It's all inevitably political...
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
Well, reverting to hunter-gathering lifestyles would certainly result in mass starvation. =)

that is because living in civilization, we have been robbed of basic survival skills.
but yes there are too many people right now to support a hunter gatherer lifestyle
BoG75 (6816 D)

All I hear is about rice shortage. Well that is great. I dont eat that much of rice. Was getting worried for a minute.
fwancophile (164 D)

these attacks on consumption and on behalf of "sustainability" are motivated far more by politics than by fact.
melbourne (100 D)
01 May 08 UTC
Not necessarily: There is only so much arable land available for food production. The argument is that food prices are rising because some of this food production is being directed to biofuels.
melbourne (100 D)
01 May 08 UTC
And also population growth. And rapidly rising standards of living in highly populous developing countries. But people seem to blame the biofuels.
sean (3490 D(B))

i have heard that price speculation and futures/options trading is also having an exacerbating effect on the prices of food commodities. Due to chinese/japanese and middle eastern sovereign funds taking their money out of the recession bound US economy.

well thats what i read, as im not a guy rearranging blips on a screen for a huge salary i dont have any 1st hand knowledge of this.

If anyone enters a game that includes both Yakulu and Yosheekee, they work as a team. They've played in three games together and in every one they've done it. (Kiss Diplo - 01, Alex Ovechkin is Golfing Now & jesus wore a poncho) Three straight games is not a coincidence.

Don't accuse them of being one person though, they get very upset about that.

a personal declaration
I declare, after much thought and introspection, my deliberate emancipation from participation in empty consumerism, and in the society that perpetuates it. The same society that mendaciously and injudiciously prioritizes practices that are wasteful, contradictory, and wholly detrimental, that is intolerable to any ideas which break civilizations circular reinforcement of the illusion of it's own importance, and is hostile to those who harbor them, that shortsightedly persists with the intentional, wanton destruction of finite natural resources and biodiversity, exploiting the limited carrying capacity of the Earth and knowingly leading us to a disastrous end. I have decided to secede from this culture of conformity and materialism, because acceptance of its principles leads to inclusion in a tragedy of the commons on a massive scale, and to the destruction of individualism, liberty, self-reliance and free thought. I refuse to unthinkingly accept the idea that our current civilization is both necessary and inevitable, but to always stay true to my convictions and beliefs, and to remain as free as I can of the harmful influence of our society. I will endeavor to inform others of the unfavorable outcomes of materialism, industrialization, idolization, globalization, ethnocentrism, objectification, conformity, and government, because it is my hope that by informing the populace, the abolition of these philosophies can be accomplished without violence and anarchy. I will remove myself, to the best of my ability, from a lifestyle that I no longer believe in or desire.

Eurocentrism
The game of Diplomacy is certainly Eurocentric but what are our opinions on other forms of Eurocentrism? I don't mean to go into the territory of "racism" although we could possibly explore "racialism". Should white people (and other people) try to resist a Eurocentric outlook on life?

AI and Diplomacy
Has anybody played the PC diplomacy game? i heard there is a new version out.
i played one about 3 or 4 years ago. graphics and interface were quite nice but it had one huge draw back... too bloody easy. for example on the hard setting as Austria ..... you would win almost every time.

how is the new one if anybody knows?

and as a side question how would an AI do against a human do you think?
kestas and other code minded individuals have you ever thought about setting one up? would be quite cool of you to run one in php games. sure it may not be able to understand our jibberish and typo filled demands in the chat box but it could play on semi no press individual mode.

New Player Needs Help
Hello everyone, i have just joined the site. I have never played diplomacy before, but i love the idea. I am a big fan of nomics, quo vadis, and other political/negotiation games (I would almost include risk in that category). I have read articles and descriptions of the game, and I believe I understand the basic rules. I don't want to to just jump in to a game and screw things up. What should I do? Is the there something i should read?
