Polemically Postured Pompous Personal Promotion...
Can play this game too?

In solemn declaration, I myself personally hereby vow to sesquipedalianise and, through such verbositisation, expose the inverse correlation linking the challenged status of my clarityism, maturityism, originalitysm and hopeless belief in the misuse of abstract noun-strings (ismtyism) to that of my interlect...

Please do not respond. I promise not to add to this thread.

Unless you force me.

I will stop now.

I really will.

I might start another thread though.

It is important that my work be read seriously.

I really do not know why my tutors could not appreciate it, but I will not use the conspiracy word.

And I do not keep looking at my mobile...

*Warning* -- Teammates at work
If anyone enters a game that includes both Yakulu and Yosheekee, they work as a team. They've played in three games together and in every one they've done it. (Kiss Diplo - 01, Alex Ovechkin is Golfing Now & jesus wore a poncho) Three straight games is not a coincidence.

Don't accuse them of being one person though, they get very upset about that.

a personal declaration
I declare, after much thought and introspection, my deliberate emancipation from participation in empty consumerism, and in the society that perpetuates it. The same society that mendaciously and injudiciously prioritizes practices that are wasteful, contradictory, and wholly detrimental, that is intolerable to any ideas which break civilizations circular reinforcement of the illusion of it's own importance, and is hostile to those who harbor them, that shortsightedly persists with the intentional, wanton destruction of finite natural resources and biodiversity, exploiting the limited carrying capacity of the Earth and knowingly leading us to a disastrous end. I have decided to secede from this culture of conformity and materialism, because acceptance of its principles leads to inclusion in a tragedy of the commons on a massive scale, and to the destruction of individualism, liberty, self-reliance and free thought. I refuse to unthinkingly accept the idea that our current civilization is both necessary and inevitable, but to always stay true to my convictions and beliefs, and to remain as free as I can of the harmful influence of our society. I will endeavor to inform others of the unfavorable outcomes of materialism, industrialization, idolization, globalization, ethnocentrism, objectification, conformity, and government, because it is my hope that by informing the populace, the abolition of these philosophies can be accomplished without violence and anarchy. I will remove myself, to the best of my ability, from a lifestyle that I no longer believe in or desire.

Eurocentrism
The game of Diplomacy is certainly Eurocentric but what are our opinions on other forms of Eurocentrism? I don't mean to go into the territory of "racism" although we could possibly explore "racialism". Should white people (and other people) try to resist a Eurocentric outlook on life?

AI and Diplomacy
Has anybody played the PC diplomacy game? i heard there is a new version out.
i played one about 3 or 4 years ago. graphics and interface were quite nice but it had one huge draw back... too bloody easy. for example on the hard setting as Austria ..... you would win almost every time.

how is the new one if anybody knows?

and as a side question how would an AI do against a human do you think?
kestas and other code minded individuals have you ever thought about setting one up? would be quite cool of you to run one in php games. sure it may not be able to understand our jibberish and typo filled demands in the chat box but it could play on semi no press individual mode.

The Nature of Life
What is life? When does it begin? What purpose does it serve? Is it in any way sacred or sanctified?
Possible tangents include:
Abortion, war, genocide, eugenics, euthanasia, assisted suicide, social Darwinism, ethics, theism, and many more!

No he isn't.

But if he were, above applies.

What I mean is that the very assumption that to die would be preferable than the current situation, no matter the extreme despair of the situation, is a gamble at best.
Sicarius (673 D)

only if you are religious
Thucydides (864 D(B))
24 Apr 08 UTC
Why is that the case. Is it not possible, and you must admit the mere POSSIBILITY that even if someone does not believe in a hell, for example, that they will end up there. But let's pretend its not a hell. Rather let's say its just another life like this one. Or a life only slightly more miserable than the one they had. Or a paradise. Or no existence whatsoever. No matter what you believe in, one of these things will end up happening to you, whether you believed in it or not. If none of us knows, how can we rationally make the decision to so permanently end our own lives, the only thing of which we can be truly sure?
Sicarius (673 D)
24 Apr 08 UTC
because you would rather take a gamble for something new than to be in excrutiating pain every waking moment.

honestly i dont really know why suicide is illegal. obviously it is a tradgedy, and should be prevented whenever possible, but who is anyone to tell someone else that they have to stay alive?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
24 Apr 08 UTC
You just said it. Because its a tragedy that many would probably later regret were they alive. So when the person cannot protect their own survival, government/the society as a whole does it for them. Believe it or not, we look out for eachother.
Sicarius (673 D)
24 Apr 08 UTC
no one should make decisions for another person
Thucydides (864 D(B))
24 Apr 08 UTC
That maxim is rather.... overarching... to say the least.
Sicarius (673 D)
24 Apr 08 UTC
I dont mean children or mentally hancicapped people or the criminally insane or anything like that, if thats what you were going to suggest
Thucydides (864 D(B))
24 Apr 08 UTC
No I mean everyone. No one should make every decision unilaterally.... where would that get us? If I decided to kill my parents, the role of society to instead decide for me that this is not okay is perfectly within reason. There are countless examples of this, and society discouraging others from killing themselves is another example.
Sicarius (673 D)
24 Apr 08 UTC
ok well if you kill your parents there should certainly be some repercussions.

"I'm the one thats gonna have to die when its time for me to die, so let me live my life the way I want"
Sicarius (673 D)
24 Apr 08 UTC
I'm not saying suicide is okay. but I think when someone is in constant pain they should be allowed to die if they want to.
it's most likley only due to modern technology that they are being kept alive anywya
Thucydides (864 D(B))
24 Apr 08 UTC
This may be true, but if you are to apply this "natural causes" principle you have to extend it to its conclusion, that is, if you aren't going to accept medical treatments to extend your life, you should also refuse vaccinations, minor operations, and other medical procedures that extend your life "unnaturally."
Sicarius (673 D)
24 Apr 08 UTC
"extend your life" and "depend on to be alive"
are different, and should be treated as such.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
25 Apr 08 UTC
If you catch measles, you depend on your previous vaccination to be alive at the end of the week,
Sicarius (673 D)
25 Apr 08 UTC
yes. so you'd better hope you got your shots then huh
Theophilus (100 D)

I think that suicide is a very bad, and, indeed, evil thing. However, it is rather amusing that it is illegal as it is rather difficult to punish someone for killing themselves.
ednos (529 D(S))
26 Apr 08 UTC
My argument was against utilitarianism, and neither supported your argument nor subtracted from it.

Sicarius, "extend your life" and "depend on to be alive" are like rectangles and squares, respectively. Not all things that extend your life are necessary for survival, but all things on which you depend extend your life beyond what it would be in the absence of such things.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
26 Apr 08 UTC
I agree it does seem a paradox that such laws exist, but they are more in place to mandate rehabilitation for those who try and fail to commit suicide. Indeed, the fact that we say "commit" suicide has two meanings: One is, it is a crime, a bad thing to do, like you would commit a murder or a felony. Also, it alludes to the finality of suicide. You commit to your own death and whether you would change your mind later is irrelevant, as you are now dead, the only permanence you will ever experience, for good or ill.
ednos (529 D(S))
26 Apr 08 UTC
I also commit to a relationship. Commit itself does not carry that negative connotation. Suicide is the operative word there, and we regard it as unnatural for good reason.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Apr 08 UTC
yes, it is a very but thing, but I thought we were talking about assisted suicide

New Player Needs Help
Hello everyone, i have just joined the site. I have never played diplomacy before, but i love the idea. I am a big fan of nomics, quo vadis, and other political/negotiation games (I would almost include risk in that category). I have read articles and descriptions of the game, and I believe I understand the basic rules. I don't want to to just jump in to a game and screw things up. What should I do? Is the there something i should read?
