Oh yeah, and diplomacy is also my recreation. Rather, these cute debates here are my recreation.

My work and my play are the same thing. I enjoy everything I do
Jerkface (1626 D)

This is a foolish dream that is almost never realized. I simply don't believe you, unless you are borderline retarded or have an emotional disorder. The human spirit needs work and it needs play and the way it interacts with these two things is entirely different. I, too, used to believe that the best happiness is the melding of work and play but after doing that for some time, I found that all I had was play and depression. It's a hard truth but I have conventional wisdom on my side.
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Apr 08 UTC
you're completely right, I'm an emotionally troubled retard. take nothing I say seriously because obviously my ability to enjoy the simple things in life indicates deep-seated mental problems. What a shame I cant be a normal well adjusted person like the rest of you, comfortable in my misery. I should just trudge through life choking down anti depressants and ritalin so I can fit in with the rest of you. forget joy, pass me the prozac. forget energy and spontaneity pass me the adderall.
we used to have characteristics, now we have symptoms.

Oh no!! he's enjoying himself!!! someone help us quick!!!
Jerkface (1626 D)
29 Apr 08 UTC
Actually I believe you are neither a retard nor emotionally troubled. I believe you are a liar. You are normal and you are fairly well adjusted. You simply need to allow yourself the opportunity to grow more, that is all. How old are you? 19? What percentage of your total lifespan is that? Do you really believe that something you've come up with in the last few years will dictate the entire rest of your life? Don't be so hasty to close your mind, please!

You might notice that I am STILL open to your ideas and, who knows, maybe someday I will adopt them if I ever get as disillusioned as you.

Please, lets not turn this thread into a flame-ware.

I'm rather pleased that people found my questions to be interesting! I agree, it seems that there is a sect of people in society that must feel like they most always do the right/moral/better thing, no matter what that may be: read books vs. TV, buying organic vs. commercial farmed, vegetarian vs. non-vegetarian diet, indie bands and labels vs. mainstream music... I think you get the idea by now. No one can say for sure whether one of these is "better" or not, except this group of people will make you believe that it is. I tend to think that part of it is an ego-booster thing, that people are proud of being different. Thats just my two cents...

On an interesting side note, I just found out today that my cube partner (who is also my age, I think....somewhere early 20's) doesn't own a tv. They used to, but when they moved to Oregon, they left behind/sold alot of their belongings, and they haven't really replaced the TV that they had. I asked him whether or not he liked the change, and he was rather indifferent to it ... he and his wife now do more things outside, but when they are just inside the house, he admitted that it can get real dull, and that he would like to have tv back into his house. He owns a laptop, and he said that they like to watch movies on their laptops instead... I guess this sort of counts as "TV"...it might not be television, per se, but I think this is pretty close!

I'm sorry if I have been participating in a flame war. I'm not so clear on the boundaries of what is generally acceptable and I intended all my comments to be constructive. But I do recognize that corresponding with only one person on a public forum like this could be a bad idea.

Back on topic, I agree that many of these decisions are motivated by egos. It is funny how it works inversely from how it used to. Instead of being able to show off your fancier, more expensive goods so that your neighbors can envy your riches, now it is fashionable to show off your more obscure, "street", or pseudo-compassionate goods so that your neighbors can envy how thoughtful or "real" you are. I think it's great to place value in thoughtfulness but the essential problem remains: the derivation of moral pride from ones belongings, or lack thereof.

I definitely treat my laptop like a TV and (almost) never use the TV that I have access to. I don't plan to ever buy a TV.

It's not a flamewar.

You people are being DIDDLED by a homeless idiot.

What does that make you?

Ignore him/her and he/she will (Please God) go away. It's that simple.
Jerkface (1626 D)
01 May 08 UTC
Diddled? It makes me curious. I don't want him to go away. Now, I understand you even less. What's your motivation here?

maple, settle petal.
thats really interesting what darwyn said. i would guess that PC games etc being interactive is a lot different. certainly its important to keep the brain active. i do a lot of sudoku at work. from a distance my boss can see me bent over my desk face cast in a look of intense concentration, pencil in hand. it s a win win situation!

whats a "cube partner"?

yes, sicarious jerkface despite his god awful name is spot on, you are young. im not going to be old funny duddy granpa saying "listen to your elders boy" but i do believe its a bit short sighted and hubristic (not even a real word but it should be!) of you be so rigid in your views.
Lolflower (151 D)
02 May 08 UTC
A cube partner is a lot like a cell mate ... except your environment is an office cubicle rather than a prison cell. Everything else, however, is the same ... I still have to keep him in check to make him my "bitch" ;)

I'm of the opinion that video/computer games are of a higher level than television, since many games, especially those in real time, require fast (at times, obscene!) hand-eye coordination, strategic thinking, etc. There's more involvement by the participant. I'm not sure whether or not this is why I play more games than I watch TV. I think its just because I've become so disappointed with alot of shows on TV. The exceptions (Family Guy, South Park, The Office, Scrubs, BSG...) are too few and far between.

And on another note ... I'm not going to make any claims about the person posting it, but I think its very unlikely that somebody's work and play coexist in the same realm. I am just now exiting college and entering the workforce, so I may be the misinformed one, but I see alot of people who work for a living, and their jobs are just that... jobs that help them pay the bills. Sure, there are some jobs out there that people love to do ... you hear this alot from teachers, for example ... but I don't necessarily think thats what they would like to be doing in their offtime. Maybe a few; I think if you ARE one of those people whose profession and hobbies coexist, then you are an extremely lucky individual, and you should milk it for all its worth!
Sicarius (673 D)

I am more flexible than you probably think.
yes I am young, and it is possible my views will change, and I am open to your suggestions
but right now this is what works for me, and its what I enjoy.
Jerkface (1626 D)
02 May 08 UTC
That's great, Sicarius. Oftentimes your language doesn't betray such flexibility as it sounds rather dogmatic. But if this is your true sentiment, then I wish you the best of luck and hope that you get to see and feel as much of life as possible before your time is up.

Well it's a week later and once again Survivor rewarded Diplomacy players with another lesson in backstabbing. Once again, an immunity idol (sort of a get out of jail card) was in play. Would the idol holder play it? Remember, two weeks in a row, the idol holder didn't play it and was voted out.

Of course Amanda played it. The difference, she kept communication open and knew her plight. Every vote was for Amanda. Every vote but hers.

The diplomacy lesson: keep your friends close, your enemies closer.

Can play this game too?

Please do not respond. I promise not to add to this thread.

Unless you force me.

I will stop now.

I really will.

I might start another thread though.

It is important that my work be read seriously.

I really do not know why my tutors could not appreciate it, but I will not use the conspiracy word.

And I do not keep looking at my mobile...

If anyone enters a game that includes both Yakulu and Yosheekee, they work as a team. They've played in three games together and in every one they've done it. (Kiss Diplo - 01, Alex Ovechkin is Golfing Now & jesus wore a poncho) Three straight games is not a coincidence.

Don't accuse them of being one person though, they get very upset about that.

a personal declaration
I declare, after much thought and introspection, my deliberate emancipation from participation in empty consumerism, and in the society that perpetuates it. The same society that mendaciously and injudiciously prioritizes practices that are wasteful, contradictory, and wholly detrimental, that is intolerable to any ideas which break civilizations circular reinforcement of the illusion of it's own importance, and is hostile to those who harbor them, that shortsightedly persists with the intentional, wanton destruction of finite natural resources and biodiversity, exploiting the limited carrying capacity of the Earth and knowingly leading us to a disastrous end. I have decided to secede from this culture of conformity and materialism, because acceptance of its principles leads to inclusion in a tragedy of the commons on a massive scale, and to the destruction of individualism, liberty, self-reliance and free thought. I refuse to unthinkingly accept the idea that our current civilization is both necessary and inevitable, but to always stay true to my convictions and beliefs, and to remain as free as I can of the harmful influence of our society. I will endeavor to inform others of the unfavorable outcomes of materialism, industrialization, idolization, globalization, ethnocentrism, objectification, conformity, and government, because it is my hope that by informing the populace, the abolition of these philosophies can be accomplished without violence and anarchy. I will remove myself, to the best of my ability, from a lifestyle that I no longer believe in or desire.

Eurocentrism
The game of Diplomacy is certainly Eurocentric but what are our opinions on other forms of Eurocentrism? I don't mean to go into the territory of "racism" although we could possibly explore "racialism". Should white people (and other people) try to resist a Eurocentric outlook on life?

AI and Diplomacy
Has anybody played the PC diplomacy game? i heard there is a new version out.
i played one about 3 or 4 years ago. graphics and interface were quite nice but it had one huge draw back... too bloody easy. for example on the hard setting as Austria ..... you would win almost every time.

how is the new one if anybody knows?

and as a side question how would an AI do against a human do you think?
kestas and other code minded individuals have you ever thought about setting one up? would be quite cool of you to run one in php games. sure it may not be able to understand our jibberish and typo filled demands in the chat box but it could play on semi no press individual mode.

New Player Needs Help
Hello everyone, i have just joined the site. I have never played diplomacy before, but i love the idea. I am a big fan of nomics, quo vadis, and other political/negotiation games (I would almost include risk in that category). I have read articles and descriptions of the game, and I believe I understand the basic rules. I don't want to to just jump in to a game and screw things up. What should I do? Is the there something i should read?
