new game
Even wanted to meet than man behind the myth ? new game staring the one and only kestas needs 4 more players. 101 points.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=3117

apologises to Razz for posting about the game he started on the forum and for kestas for blatantly using his name to pull in other players. in my defence its just 14 hours to go before the game starts or fails and we only have 3 so far.

Non active players
was wondering what it takes to be in the top 100 of php players. (should be of wins compared to games played but thats another story) seems to be about 500 Dpoints. was it always thus?

i noticed a lot of players didn't have active games. As there are no dates on the finished games i don't know how long ago their games were. but i was wondering what people thought of a system to slowly take away points to non active players?Nothing too drastic, i don't mean if you haven't been active in 2 or 3 months but longer, maybe after 3 months 10% of your points are taken away for every month that you remain inactive. that continues until you reach 100 points then it stops.

Just thinking it would be good to have a (maybe a side bar to the forum page of phpdip) a current list of top 100 players.

Playing in one game, CD in another
It's frustrating when someone is playing in one game but not putting in orders (nearing civil disorder) in another game. The 24-hour time frame gets old, especially when retreat and build phases are included, when you have to wait for it day after day. This method of play is ruder than going civil disorder in all of one's games.

Just venting. I realize that this won't change anything.

Offline period
phpDip was offline for a while, I'm not sure how long. Just as I was posting a support ticket it came back online though.

I'm going to delay next process times by 10 hours, in case anyone missed their orders.

In case anyone was wondering if the update was being applied; when the update is applied there'll be a days warning, and a message posted to the site letting you know that the site is being updated.

No Press Tournament
We have finished one, did the other finish? i see there are quite a few No Press games going/finished recently. i saw a no.5 up and running i think. So how about we take the 7 highest unit getters of all the games finished?
but if people want to just take the best 7 from the 2 set No Press Tournament games its ok with me.

Game objectives
I know most people follow the path of
1) Don't die out
2) Don't loose
3) Win
However, in one of my games I've reached an interesting point. We are about to reach a stalemate line, with me on oneside and the other two players, who are allied, on the other. This looks like it is going to therefore me a draw. However, if one of them stabs the other, then it will not. In this situation they have said they think i would win (which is a possibility I admit). But then, even if I win, they would still take more out of it than a draw.
So, what I'm asking is do people think that a draw is a better finish than a good 2nd place?
mapleleaf (0 DX)
26 Feb 08 UTC
I am a win/loss(classic board game)person. The point system means nothing to me, nor will it ever.

My objectives.
1. Win.
2. Don't let anybody else win.(so, yes, I would favour a draw over second place)
3. Wipe out back stabbers with no regard whatsoever for my own existence.
thewonderllama (100 D)
26 Feb 08 UTC
i'm similar to mapleleaf on this one, however the wiping out back stabbers with no regard whatsoever for my own existence is generally only used when i know i can't survive or as making good on a diplomatic threat. i'll bury the hatchet for a shot at a win or, failing that, a draw.

but win > draw > strong 2nd/3rd/4th/etc. place > elimination

My objetive always is to win, but if i can´t, i think that the better ending is getting all the CPs that you can´t.
It doesn´t matter if is a draw or a second place, the important are the CPs

If I can't win myself I will always do my best to ensure no one else can.
Darwyn (1601 D)

My objectives are similar to mapleleafs as well. Except, depending on who I'm dealing with, I sometimes swap objectives 2 and 3.

I've grown to really dislike arrogant backstabbers.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
27 Feb 08 UTC
I would be remiss, if I did not add the final objective.

4. Survive.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
27 Feb 08 UTC
Well Maple, I think I agree with you (not quite sure), and as you know it's our game I'm talking about I think a draw it shall be. Now, just to quickly finish off Germany... :P
abab (1312 D)
27 Feb 08 UTC
The answer to the question put by figlesquidge depends on the long term target of the player.
If that is the highest possible pot, it does not matter whether one can draw or get only a placement with someone else winning, provided one maximizes the pot he/she grabs, given the evolution of the game.
If instead the "reward policy" is more like board game, as mapleleaf referred to, than the priorities set out by mapleleaf are probably the most reasonable.
As for stabbers, I despised them when started playing on phpDip; then I had to be a (actually goofy) stabber myself in a number of games and I have to recognize that sometimes you have to, if "win" is the top priority target (not just surviving). Yet, I always feel ashamed (I guess in no way I could ever be a "politician"...).
figlesquidge (2131 D)
27 Feb 08 UTC
That is the logic behind it yes Abab, but it seems I didn't phrase my question well. I meant to ask more what do _you_ do?
Do you prefer to get the highest pot portion you can or you would rather draw the game
abab (1312 D)
27 Feb 08 UTC
I myself would think of a draw as a better result than turning out to be the 2nd or worse in a game where someone else wins.
Chrispminis (916 D)

I prefer a draw to a second place finish, though this only ever happens to me when a stalemate arises.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
27 Feb 08 UTC
"Second place" still is a position where you loose. It only exists because the game in ftf would have been ridiculous if total annihilation was to be reached. 18 Centres just represents total control, on the understanding that victory will come from this. Thus I have only two objectives: Win and Avoid defeat. Being annihilated and letting somebody else win are equal to me.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
27 Feb 08 UTC
Well I am surprised. That is my view as well, but I must admit I was expecting more people would follow the best loss policy-possibly this is because of the type of person who posts on the forum. Once winner-takes-all comes through, I know i will play these points/SC games differently than I do at the moment, but for now a win is the top objective, and draw 2nd.
I was driven to ask this because in one of my games I am stuck at a stalemate line, with my only change of victory if the two others stab, which just isn't going to happen. Thanks for your views people!

I'm also pleasantly surprised by the responses here. From previous, ahem, "discussions" on the forum I thought I was in a minority for wanting to win, and stop anyone else winning, regardless of the points position.

I also think backstabbers are getting a bad press. If a backstab is necessary (or very useful) to help a player win the game, then it is not only desirable, I think there is a moral obligation to backstab your ally, otherwise you are not playing the game as competitively as you should be (ie you're not trying to win).

It is only the pointless backstabs early in the game which harm the backstabbers chances of winning as much as your own which deserve a Total War response.
positron (1160 D)

I could say I play to win, then draw, then survive, but I can't say that's how I play.

I look for allies first. Then common goals to achieve with the help my allies. If enemies appear, they are given every chance to reform. If not, enemies are to be destroyed without mercy.

Win, place or show -- for me the fun is forming alliances and destroying enemies.

What happened here?
In my game my move from Ionian Sea to Adriatic Sea bounced when I'm quite sure it shouldn't have. The game is at http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2906 and all of the 'GameMaster' messages relating to this turn are below. Am I just being stupid or is there really no reason for the bounce?

Bugs and FAQs
As notice in FAQ secction: 'adjudicator works for the majority of moves made, but it is a simplified implementation of the official rules'.

Since I has suffer some bugs or disfuction of adjudicator (like retreating for SPA(sc), supporting convoys, some uncutted unexpected supports, etc), etc.

Is there a complete list of detected bugs/misfuctions where players can follow them and see if this bugs/misfuction are fixed?

I don't found this on 'HELP' page....

Thanks Kestas.

Abandonments
I count 9 different players in CD now, which seems a rather high number. At the same time, games with higher pots seem to be having a hard time getting off the ground. I wonder what's going on?

Hopefully the update will correct this, at least in part, by adding an abandon game option. However, I still think it would be worthwhile to analyze whether the length of time it takes to put a country into CD is too long. My sense is that it is.
