new game
Even wanted to meet than man behind the myth ? new game staring the one and only kestas needs 4 more players. 101 points.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=3117

apologises to Razz for posting about the game he started on the forum and for kestas for blatantly using his name to pull in other players. in my defence its just 14 hours to go before the game starts or fails and we only have 3 so far.

Non active players
was wondering what it takes to be in the top 100 of php players. (should be of wins compared to games played but thats another story) seems to be about 500 Dpoints. was it always thus?

i noticed a lot of players didn't have active games. As there are no dates on the finished games i don't know how long ago their games were. but i was wondering what people thought of a system to slowly take away points to non active players?Nothing too drastic, i don't mean if you haven't been active in 2 or 3 months but longer, maybe after 3 months 10% of your points are taken away for every month that you remain inactive. that continues until you reach 100 points then it stops.

Just thinking it would be good to have a (maybe a side bar to the forum page of phpdip) a current list of top 100 players.

Playing in one game, CD in another
It's frustrating when someone is playing in one game but not putting in orders (nearing civil disorder) in another game. The 24-hour time frame gets old, especially when retreat and build phases are included, when you have to wait for it day after day. This method of play is ruder than going civil disorder in all of one's games.

Just venting. I realize that this won't change anything.

phpDip was offline for a while, I'm not sure how long. Just as I was posting a support ticket it came back online though.

I'm going to delay next process times by 10 hours, in case anyone missed their orders.

In case anyone was wondering if the update was being applied; when the update is applied there'll be a days warning, and a message posted to the site letting you know that the site is being updated.

No Press Tournament
We have finished one, did the other finish? i see there are quite a few No Press games going/finished recently. i saw a no.5 up and running i think. So how about we take the 7 highest unit getters of all the games finished?
but if people want to just take the best 7 from the 2 set No Press Tournament games its ok with me.

NPT game 1

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2720
Noirin 12 units
sean 19 units

oops that should read NPT game 2 sorry, game 1 is still going on

14 Feb 08 UTC
Agreed with flashman. As a one unit survivor, who sat in Germany for six years doing nothing because England thought he was stabbing him, when he was manouvering to the North Sea to stop France killing him...

Anyway, you might guess I found that awfully frustrating.
thewonderllama (100 D)

NPT 1 finally finished.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2716
Rait 18 units
thewonderllama 13 units
mightyrobot 3 units

Looks like cgwhite survived your game as well, and that'd make 7 if everyone involved's still interested...
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
I started by jumping up and down with joy at getting through, but given the frustration...

Yeah, I'd give it another go. Hopefully I won't irritate an 'ally' by trying an unorthodox move again.

Out of interest, how did other players find the games?
thewonderllama (100 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
well, other than the infuriating fact that rait keeps beating me in no press games, i thought it was an interesting game.
thewonderllama (100 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
but i suppose many people have that feeling about press games too. :)
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
God yes. No offence to Rait, but he seems to have this hold over other players. He and I were allied, and we were racing to the finish jointly against an Austria that had been forced to retreat into the Balkans/Turkey. Rait was France, I was Germany. I asked for Austria's help against Rait in return for a few extra units, but he wouldn't budge from helping Rait against me!

The frustrating thing with the non press games was getting virtually wiped out after two years, and being forced to sit tight for seven years holding all of my units in German home supply centres...
Chrispminis (916 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
Wait, you asked for Austria's help...? In a no press game?

It was fun, trying to communicate with others without actually communicating. Rait and I were stumbling about trying to work with each other against England, but I guess he got impatient. I ended up migrating from Germany to England. =D
thewonderllama (100 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
i think cg's referring to a press game. :)
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
20 Feb 08 UTC
Yes - it was a press game. I was refering to the psychological hold Rait seems to have over people on this site.

taking over a few other peoples games as my games wind down, i've noticed that they don't chat much at all. in fact in one game i took over from a wayward fellow who pays too many games and let loads of them fall into CD... grrrr, anyway there are only two powers left in the whole game and he has NEVER talked to his opponent. its not a no press game
are there loads of players out there who act like every game is a no(or extreme minimalist) press game?
or do the chat tabs wipe out old chats after a certain time period similar to the gamemaster tab?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 Feb 08 UTC
They disappear, but i think thats done on number of messages not time.
I talk loads (as any of my allies/opponents will tell you), and most of it is useless rubbish!
flashman (2274 D(G))
22 Feb 08 UTC
Yep, no press is fascinating... especially when you are drawn next to a tactical master and have to try to out-guess him.

As for communication... It is fun trying to do it within the rules... I wonder whether it is a bit like First Contact where you explore a very limited range of tools? I for one have made strange moves to get someone's attention... And hoped that a look at the gamemaster will make someone twig that I'm on their side or something like that...

figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 Feb 08 UTC
Well I think I'll join the no-press crowd once my current batch of games are over, and I really want to try the Broadcast game - when we get a tab to send messages to all players, a game where everything must go through that
flashman (2274 D(G))
22 Feb 08 UTC
Sean, I share your frustration with non-talkers...

I have met them in take-overs. Mind you, I have had success with one or two recently who, having got them to talk, are going at it quite nicely now. Perhaps it helps if you grew up on face-to-face where talking is so obviously necessary that you would never think about it any other way.

In fact, if any of you have not tried face-to-face, believe me, the problem is more one of trying to stop people talking to you because you've only got a minute left to write down orders for 10+ units etc...

Mr Gobbledydook please take note: when you are Austria and have been taken out in just over two years by a rather determined alliance, you are not supposed to spend the rest of the day asking whether you made a mistake in your openning moves!

figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 Feb 08 UTC
Haha, maybe thats the solution. Talk to your enemies so much that they promise to become allies if you shut up!
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
23 Feb 08 UTC
I'd be in from Monday (UK time) - I'm not going to be much around this weekend, although come to think of it, there's not much to do other than submit orders!

I tried the 'strange move' tactic Flashman, and it led to me barely surviving as a one unit country! That doesn't mean I'm going to be ultra conservative though. Gamemaster's list of moves, and the new lot when we get the update, hopefully listing each country's moves (?) will be useful.

how do you enforce no press?
sean (3490 D(B))
24 Feb 08 UTC
In a word, honour.
most have played a few games together, if we break it then we wont be invited back to play any other honour rules based game and the others might be reluctant to ally with us in the regular games too maybe.
kickboxer (128 D)
24 Feb 08 UTC
ok. Sounds interesting. A lot harder to detect cheating though, since in honor team games, at least you can tell by moves. I guess trust has to come into it?
thewonderllama (100 D)
24 Feb 08 UTC
Well the key is that it takes two people to cheat in a no press game, so the fear of the potential pressee ratting them out may keep any who arr tempted to press in line. Though I must say I prefer to think we're all just mature enough to play fair. I doubt the 5 point buy in and passworded games are much of a draw for point grubbing cheaters.
sean (3490 D(B))

Game objectives
I know most people follow the path of
1) Don't die out
2) Don't loose
3) Win
However, in one of my games I've reached an interesting point. We are about to reach a stalemate line, with me on oneside and the other two players, who are allied, on the other. This looks like it is going to therefore me a draw. However, if one of them stabs the other, then it will not. In this situation they have said they think i would win (which is a possibility I admit). But then, even if I win, they would still take more out of it than a draw.
So, what I'm asking is do people think that a draw is a better finish than a good 2nd place?

What happened here?
In my game my move from Ionian Sea to Adriatic Sea bounced when I'm quite sure it shouldn't have. The game is at http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2906 and all of the 'GameMaster' messages relating to this turn are below. Am I just being stupid or is there really no reason for the bounce?

12:15 AM Spring 1908, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Apulia successfully supported the fleet at Ionian Sea move to Adriatic Sea.

Bugs and FAQs
As notice in FAQ secction: 'adjudicator works for the majority of moves made, but it is a simplified implementation of the official rules'.

Since I has suffer some bugs or disfuction of adjudicator (like retreating for SPA(sc), supporting convoys, some uncutted unexpected supports, etc), etc.

Is there a complete list of detected bugs/misfuctions where players can follow them and see if this bugs/misfuction are fixed?

I don't found this on 'HELP' page....

Thanks Kestas.

Abandonments
I count 9 different players in CD now, which seems a rather high number. At the same time, games with higher pots seem to be having a hard time getting off the ground. I wonder what's going on?

Hopefully the update will correct this, at least in part, by adding an abandon game option. However, I still think it would be worthwhile to analyze whether the length of time it takes to put a country into CD is too long. My sense is that it is.
