Question: Is the "Republic vs. Democracy" thing just an American thing?

I've heard Americans talk about how "America is a republic not a democracy". Using the standard definitions of those words it doesn't make any sense, however if you use the ridiculous definitions those people come up with than it is true. Does anyone outside of the US use this ridiculous dichotomy or is it just Americans?

I just saw the new ghost ratings. Appears that previously post rankings have changed. I thought that once posted they were locked.

People You Know

So, when it comes to friends and family, one should only play password protected games with them. But what about people I am meeting at face to face games in clubs in my state? What about if I start getting involved in the tournament scene? How do the more experienced players on here handle it? At what point does it become inappropriate to play in public games with people you have met through the game?

All overall GR from January 2016 onwards has been updated to reflect the correct values for SoS games.

ghug and I have tediously added the entire backlog of category lists; so you can now see your Live Game, Gunboat, and WTA Classic Non-Live FP GR's separately once more.

The WTA Classic GR also includes both DSS and SoS games, just not PPSC games.

Shoutouts to VillageIdiot for topping the WTA Classic Non-Live FP category

SplitDiplomat for topping the Gunboat category

And, of course, myself. For topping the Live Game category.

All plus ones are welcome.

A combination of dropoffs and others losing GR I would imagine.

Do note that the January - August lists for this year have changed from what they were previously now that we have integrated Sum of Squares and properly excluded Unranked from the script. So you may find yourself in a very different August position to where you were before.

It's not actually that complicated. The math appears very complicated because it got there in a roundabout way, but every game is basically:

Each player "bets" 2/35 of their GR (other press and map options have smaller bets).
All of that GR is put into a pot.
The pot is divided exactly how it would be on webDip given the scoring system.

Ah, sorry, I'm on mobile and never saw the explanations which appear st the bottom.

It seems like a lot of thought has been put into the formula. I skimmed it because it started looking more and more like my math homework but it's actually kind of neat. Tons better than points.

Does anyone know where theGhostmaker is nowadays?

I have no idea how long this has been the case but I just discovered I'm in the top 10 for live game players :O.

That's hilarious. I almost feel obligated to make time for another live game.

This category stuff is weird. When filtering out live games and gunboat, I'm way higher on the list. I wonder why that is.

Note: Categories do not "filter out" games. Rather they run GR again entirely from scratch using only the games in question - so they bear no actual relation to the Overall GR; aside from using the same algorithm.

A better rating system is still on the to do list, but the to do list is very very long, and it's our opinion that something is better than nothing.

@valis if you're speaking to me, my high in GR is 8th. I'm also involved in my only press game of the year now. I guess my decline can be attributed to playing with morons in GB too. I'll use you as an example

GB is hit or miss dependent on a lot of things. But I can't remember the last time I was eliminated from a full press game. ;-)

Great work in getting this up there, folks.

I'm enormously proud to be sixth in the live non-gunboat (aka "real") rankings.

VillageIdiot and peterwiggin and right behind them Octavious are not just the best live non-gunboat players active, but look at the gap! Nobody active even has a peak GR as high as their current relatively down rankings.

Man, 35th in non-gunboat live but 348th in gunboat live...

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve at GB? I feel like it is more luck than live press as if multiple countries set on you from the get go there is nothing you can do (as has happened in most of my GB games). Unless I am missing something?

Noobs can be damned tricky. Give me six experienced players any day. They're far more predictable. You can almost write their orders for them. And you get more GR when you win :p
