Anonymous players games vs not
I'm playing in a game where there has been a discussion in global surrounding the issue of players having played in the same games before. Without mentioning player names and game ID am I safe to start a discussion about this issue here in the forum or should I wait until the game in question is over?

Before deleting Landen's account, shouldn't we consider the fact that he's in the middle of a game right now?

Brankl: However the mods handle this, no account will actually get deleted. Send an e-mail to the mods if you have concerns about an ongoing game.
Oddly, the creation of a second account would probably work to achieve the shutdown of the first account.

Doesn't the fact that an account cannot get deleted violate some stuff about keeping personal data longer than needed to provide service?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 May 15 UTC
What personally data? Also who cares?
yassem (2533 D)
07 May 15 UTC
First of all, anything that distinguishes a person can be considered personal data.
Of course the most important thing here is the email address. And then it goes all the way down to being able to see his game and, I don't know, identify his gaming style.
Of course no-one cares (unless he goes pro, and suddenly care to erase any trace of his strategies there is on the internet), but the fact that there is no way to erase oneself from the database here could even be a potential lawsuit, like by someone who gets really vengeful after being banned. I don't know what the law in US says about this, but in EU it could actually end up in the site paying up fines, compensation and being blocked until suitable way of erasing oneself is implemented. It's called "the right to be forgotten" if I'm not mistaken.
Email isn't exactly what they mean by personal data, iirc, yassem. The site isn't breaking any EU laws.

"Doesn't the fact that an account cannot get deleted violate some stuff about keeping personal data longer than needed to provide service?"

No, deleting data would compromise the database in multiple ways. For example the site would crash if we deleted a user when someone went and checked a game they were previously in. The forum would also break trying to display posts by that person, etc. We don't have one of the fancy structures capable of safely deleting data, if the EU wanted to pay us to hire a dev to add that functionality, then sure. But until that point, we can't really do anything, and nor are we in violation, as the data is serving it's intended purpose and is not personal.

The only personal data still visible is a username and we offer members the ability to change usernames (usually through a new account) if they accidentally put personal information in their username. If people are worried about their email then they can replace the real one with a fake one before they leave, and we have no information left that could connect them to a real person.
yassem (2533 D)
07 May 15 UTC
Hmm... I mean, in no way do *I* think you do anything wrong here, but I honestly thing there are cases of sites being sewed for such innocent stuff.

And the "if EU wanted to pay us" doesn't work at all. It is the developers' responsibility to abide to the law, however stupid it may be. Just to clarify, in no way am I an expert on this - I do recall however reading about site being sewed for not giving "the right to be forgotten".
You see, his information is not needed in anyway to provide *him* service any longer. By that logic you could have a system where posts and games are left intact, but for example the name is erased. Just as "he can provide another email" isn't the case, because whatever email he provides, even a totally random, fake, or not his, for all you know it might be another one of his mails, thus personal data. And the fact that other users don't see it doesn't make a difference - the thing that counts is that you keep it in your dbs.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I'm pretty sure you can't sew a site.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

The right to be forgotten is about "the right to silence on past events in life that are no longer occurring.", specifically about events that might be damaging to a person's future (eg crimes committed or major debts which have since been paid). It's also not about content deletion; it's about removing content from search results.

Very little of that applies to a website where people can play board games for fun. As far as I know, none of it applies.

Yassem is correct in that an email address would be considered personal data, but I'm not aware of any law in any law in a jurisdiction relevant to webdip that requires us to treat that data differently.

Users are aware when we collect this data (because it's typed in), and the data is kept securely. Email addresses are only kept to provide service - we use email for our password recovery system and occasionally to email users where we suspect that rules are being broken. And, the user has complete control over that data. If you change your email address, it changes it in the underlying DB (although we do have the site rule that you must have a valid email address while you have an active account).

I don't think any attempt to sue webdip over the various relevant data protection laws - EU or otherwise - would be successful. Simply put, we don't break them.
yassem (2533 D)
09 May 15 UTC
Oh yeah, I forgot that there's "under certain conditions" in the right to be forgotten.
But @ATC, I am not saying that you don't need the email to run the service. You do. But you don't need the email once someone "get's deleted". Still, you do keep the email, right?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
09 May 15 UTC
Yes, normally we do keep the email after a user has left the site. But the key here is that we do so - as far as I am aware - in compliance with the relevant laws, including the stricter 2013 changes to data protection in the EU. If a user requests the removal of their email address, we can do that. As has been said above- they can even do it themselves - there's no need to contact us.

A lot of the new regulations don't really apply to us. For example, businesses are now required to notify you when they transfer your personal data to a third party. WebDiplomacy automatically complies with this; we don't transfer any personal data to third parties. Similarly, lots of other parts of these laws are irrelevant to webdip.

While we're on the topic of Diplomacy sites and personal security - webDiplomacy keeps your password encrypted and salted - if the user database were ever compromised, it would be difficult for the attackers to get your password. At least one other major site for playing Diplomacy keeps your password in plain text.

Finding a specific gaming laptop in the Netherlands(/Europe)
Hey guys, I'm looking for a gaming laptop (with some help I came to the conclusion that the ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 might be the best option, although I'm also still considering the cheaper ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71). However, I can't really find it in Europe, or elsewhere without paying over $350 in shipping costs. So now I'm wondering if I missed something and/or there are alternative laptops that will work just as well and don't need to be shipped in for a shitload of money.

Emulator
Do you know a good emulator for Diplomacy. I am not talking about a game you play offline with your friends in your living room but more like a game where you can set all the armies and fleets on the map then you start a game. I'm doing some "what will you do in that situation?" questions for my brother.
