Anonymous players games vs not
I'm playing in a game where there has been a discussion in global surrounding the issue of players having played in the same games before. Without mentioning player names and game ID am I safe to start a discussion about this issue here in the forum or should I wait until the game in question is over?

Face to Face first timer
I'm playing my first F2F game tonight with the Windy City Weasels. Any advice?

I'm thinking about writing up a FTF-for-webdippers guide - would this be something that would be interesting for others? It would include conventions around timers etc that you won't really get from the rulebook.

MKE: Your game is probably already happening, but my advice is:

1) Don't expect to be able to talk to everyone in the time you have
2) Write down where each of your pieces are on your order pad at the start of each turn
3) Remember that you'll need to negotiate builds (and retreats!) before those phases, since there is no discussion during builds and retreats.

This may be a good resource to use as a guide:

Yes, but which ones? :)

Did you get an end game pic of the board?

MKE might have one.

No end game pic, but I might have one from 1905 or beginning 1906.

It was pretty intense. Lots of fun. On the way back to my hotel now. (Does anyone know why the "L" slows down so much near Sedgwick station? Rich people live here or something?)
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

@ATC: That was excellent advice.
The biggest problem I had was with the timer. Related: although he denied it after the game, I thought one of the players was stalling during negotiations in order to keep me from talking to others (though I didn't realize it at the time, or I would have cut it short).

It was a great experience. Thanks to @JimTheGrey for setting it up and to Ssorenn for inviting me and pressuring Jim to set up a game off-schedule in the first place.

Oh, the biggest tip I could give someone new (aside from what ATC said earlier) is that it's super helpful to take a picture of the board right after adjudication and before stepping away to negotiate with anyone.)

"I thought one of the players was stalling during negotiations in order to keep me from talking to others"

This, unfortunately, does happen. We have a player here who is a master at this - I once had to march up to him and had to say "Look, you've had 10 of the 15 minutes- it's my turn to speak to France". Fun times :)

It was good meeting you, MKECharlie! Happy to arrange the game. Hope you'll consider coming back down for Weasel Moot, June 13-14!

@ATC: Two of the other five were longtime Weasels Christian Kline in Turkey and Matt Sundstrom in Austria. The other three have all joined the club this season (Sept to August is our club season). I did not play, and gramilaj asked me to find a rreplacement for him because an unexpected guest was in town.

So as we all who have played F2F know, it's a different beast. There's another huge aspect of F2F in the so called club or bar scene. MEta-gaming. A lot of these players have such history, that often even if it's prudent for them to work together they don't, and they will continually stab at each other even to their own detriment.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

(Which I was able to exploit to my advantage.)

I'm surprised you say that ssorenn- in FTF here, most players remember styles and trustworthyness from game to game, but carrying a grudge from a previous game isn't something I've (yet) seen- and I don't think it would be welcomed (or effective). Was it the newer players?
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
07 May 15 UTC
No; the ones who have been playing together for years. It was an interesting dynamic.
There's no "mute" button in F2F, and the community is smaller. Here, you can just not play with the guy you don't like playing with, but in a club, if you want to play, you play with the other people in the club.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I have definitely seen this in the tournaments I've been to. Some people have been playing each other for 10, 20 years. They sometimes get so wrapped up in besting each other, they don't actually pay attention to the game. In fact, I did quite well once because I'm pretty sure they forgot I was on the board.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
07 May 15 UTC
I did see a guy run away with "Noo! I'm not talking to you!" once, but it wasn't effective.

I suppose the other advantage of club play is learning all the people who can/can't work together :)

Although, honestly, I think ss and I get into our own little spats from time to time. Its just harder to tell online.

That's pretty accurate. It's not easy to find six other people to play face to face, so you take who you can get. If it were easy, you wouldn't need a club.

Sounds like oral qualifying exams. The professors were so busy trying to find the flaws in each other's solutions that they mostly ignored me.

F2F is fun and intense -- I haven't done it in awhile. (NB: any SoCal players -- They run a Dip table at KingdomCon in San Diego, which takes place every April.)

--First player out, if he or she doesn't have to leave, can serve as adjudicator/timekeeper.

--Second player out goes on a snack run.

--Third player out refuses to pay for his share of the snacks, since he would still be in the game if that second player hadn't done a half-hearted stab as a desperation move to stay in the game.

Finding a specific gaming laptop in the Netherlands(/Europe)
Hey guys, I'm looking for a gaming laptop (with some help I came to the conclusion that the ASUS ROG G751JT-CH71 might be the best option, although I'm also still considering the cheaper ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71). However, I can't really find it in Europe, or elsewhere without paying over $350 in shipping costs. So now I'm wondering if I missed something and/or there are alternative laptops that will work just as well and don't need to be shipped in for a shitload of money.

Emulator
Do you know a good emulator for Diplomacy. I am not talking about a game you play offline with your friends in your living room but more like a game where you can set all the armies and fleets on the map then you start a game. I'm doing some "what will you do in that situation?" questions for my brother.
