The best bit about it is that apparently the national anthem of England is Jerusalem. I feel a stirring whenever I hear that played.

Gunboat game
In the upcoming gunboat game named "Gunboat Sat Night", 4 of the players know each other. However, we are in separate places and do not have predetermined alliances. We are only creating a public game because it is very difficult to gather 7 players.

Best strategy for Italy?
Unfortunately for me, I seem to play Italy quite often in my games. The first supply center Italy gets is Tunis, but what do you do after that? I searched some strategies for Italy on the internet an there were many conflicting viewpoints. One person argued that making an alliance with Austria and playing subtle, patient moves until you have an opportunity to back stab France was the best. What do you think? Is this true or not?

Game 1 in the books!
Well Bay asked that EOG statements for the "Bay of Clowns" game be done in this thread.

My first statement was I had no idea who anyone was in the anon:

I had the following

Crazy Anglican (England)
Sandgoose (Russia)
Austria (Bayclown)
Turkey (Draug)
Italy (Cantudylan)
France (Squiggs)
Germany (tvrocks) -- Sorry tvrocks I didn't know you and thought you might be hotheaded. In reality you were the most gracious of players.
In terms of diplomacy and tactics, I really enjoyed this game:

I was originally committed to an anti-Russian opening with a Western triple. Russia (Bay) came in early with a variation on a northern sweep that included Germany as an ally instead of our first target. That seemed like a very safe bet for England. I could keep fleets out of the north through diplomacy and I could start off with a very aggressive strike into France.

That alliance did work initially in that we hamstrung France from almost the first year. The first twist was Germany striking into Italy and at the same time denying me a build by taking Belgium too early (We had agreed that it would go to Germany but not until I could establish in Iberia and go into the Med.)

Germany at that point had already insisted that I not build fleets in London and that I never go into the North Sea. I was literally in a panic at one point expecting two German fleet builds and an invasion with my fleets too far west. At that point I turned on Germany, and it was Italy who literally saved me in the game. Without the hasty alliance we agreed to I wouldn't have been nearly as effective against Germany. At this point Russia and I are still pretty close allies, but I was aware that Russia was overreaching.

I talked to Russia about giving Serbia to Turkey, and he came back with a counter plan for Turkey to convoy Bulgaria to Apulia. In retrospect I should have gone to Turkey with my suspicions right then, but did not expect the sweep into the Balkans that Russia made that move. That was a game changer, and I fully expected Russia to solo. I had lied to and bullied Germany to the point that I expected no credibility with him at that point. I did a lot of talking with Turkey and Turkey took the lead in rallying all of us into an anti-Russian alliance. That took a lot off of me and I could focus on the north.

Luckily, Russia had offered me Sweden in exchange for Kiel. That was a big bonus for me since it turned out to be much easier to take Kiel back than it would likely have been to take a well defended Sweden. I sailed as many English boats as possible to Scandinavia, with the hopes of taking St. Pete. At that point Russia had only Munich instead of St. P and Munich and if made soloing much harder (turns out I was wrong and Russia wasn't really trying to solo, which explains my successes up north).

The ending was really interesting, in that (while assuming a Russian solo attempt) There was a lot going on on the stop the solo side. Italy (rightly, it turns out) decided to take out Germany & Turkey to go for the three way draw. Draug's banning took him out of the game at a pivotal point since we don't know what would have happened if he moved to Spain or supported Munich into Burgundy (my fear at the end).

All in all, aside from some trash talking, a very intense game with lots of twists. My advice to Bay would have been, take Ruhr when you can, it's a strategically important position and you could have put a lot of pressure on me in Burgundy with it. But also, wow what a great showing in your first game on the site! I expect to see your name in the top 100 GR at some point soon.

@ Squiggs

Not sure about Russia, but you were a key player in stopping the solo. I was really sorry to see you go after going above and beyond as our Marshall, making sure that everyone knew the plan minute by minute.

@ Sandgoose

What a good alliance all the way through. After the initially being played against one another, we forged an alliance that served us both well for the entire game. I think the decision not to attack you, and yours to trust me "but not too much :-)" really were the ones that got us both into the draw.

So I started off the game feeling out all the players. My initial goal was to recruit Italy and roll from there. I was on god terms with France the whole game and even provided information to him that would have gotten him two builds in the first turn rather than the predicament he ended up in. I proposed the Northern triple to England and Germany and they both went for it. My thinking was that I could just focus on the South and then move in West with England's and Italy's help. So while the mid-game was tumultuous, the end result was basically what I planned out from the start, an EIR draw.

I initially also wanted to work with Austria in taking out Turkey since I figured a juggernaut wouldn't fly with the Western powers. However, that all changed when Austria screwed me out of Rumania in Fall 1901 and Turkey bounced me. From there, I found out that Austria promised support into Rum to Turkey as well, so I was easily able to swing a delayed juggernaut. From there, I slowly gained the upper hand on Turkey and grew bigger, all the while Italy was screaming his little head off (rightly so).

I knew that with Italy kind of sailing back and forth and not really committing to Turkey, my window for making moves and possibly winning were diminishing, especially since England made a move on Germany and I joined him too. I knew that I'd have to end up fighting England or end it in a four way EITR draw. So while Turkey was great in helping me emerge the early game, he wasn't really providing any direct value besides requesting my supply centers with the sole reason of mooching off my gains. I also figured that Turkey and England were in talks about keeping me smaller and wanted to strike first and go on the offensive. From there I dealt Turkey a death blow while trying to mitigate the damage, but everyone was able to rally and stop me. All in all a good game and I'll be sure to get the solo next time.

Anyone reading who wants the Bay experience, I need six players for my 'Down by the Bay' game posted above
Good luck on your next game bay. I'd join but I'll be very busy over the next couple of months. I look forward to another game when things settle down.

EOG (Turkey)

I started out this game open to an alliance from either Austria or Turkey. The jugg, being famed as it was, was my first option. Things went well the first phase, but then Austria offered me a deal that was too good to be true. *Note to self: If something is to good to be true, it probably isnt true*. He had me fooled, and so I ended up going after Russia, leaving Austria to make all the gains. This actually may have helped my game out, because it cause Russia and I to ally, giving us the strength we needed to push out Austria. Russia took the lead and was able to persuade me that we were the final two and that without me he would be nothing. After looking back at the game, and reading over Bay's EOG, I realize that although I did help support Russia in and I helped in a pivotal time, Russia was in control in the whole time and I should have realized I was being played. With Italy's fleets crowding me and taking Greece, I didnt really have any options except to work with Russia though.
So I was down to three SC's, blindly following Russia. We were finally able to trim Austria down, and the whole time Russia was promising me Serbia. The entire time. So I got kinda hung up on it, and kept asking for it. Russia told me that plans had changed and that I should instead convoy over to Italy (at this point I thought it would end in a 3 way ERT). Italy was screaming in my ear that Russia was going to stab, and I thought for sure he wouldnt, but just in case I wanted some of Russia's SC's in order to gain security. Unfortunately it came across to Russia as mooching and being paranoid (maybe it was a little bit) and he stabbed.
At this point I knew that I would not be able to withstand Russia. No way. So I decided to exact revenge by stopping his solo (turns out he didnt want the solo). It was easy enough to get Italy to follow me, as he had been screaming Russian solo all game long. England followed me for the most part (although there were many times when he switched up the moves from what I told him) and Germany was the wildcard, but he stayed put until the end. It was a lot of work to get all the orders figured out and trying to work out all the scenarios, but in the end we didnt really need it. Turns out Russia didnt want the solo, he just wanted to screw me over and get a three way draw (note to Bay: Always go for the solo!!). After years of me working to put up a stalemate line, England and Italy finally put me out of my misery.

All in all an enjoyable game. Since this game was supposed to be for Bay, here is my comments on your game.

Positives:
Able to grow alliances with everyone
Able to deceive by telling someone they are more important than they really are
Able to stab allies without remorse

Cons:
Didnt go for the solo wholeheartedly
Stabbed a little too soon (you could have had the game if you waited a bit)
Talked a lot of trash at the end - I understand that you showed all of us up in that game, and if you want to talk trash that is fine, but do you really have to swear at me and tell me to die after I am down to one unit and tell me I deserve to die. I really thought you were such a nice person when you were my ally, and then as soon as you stabbed me, you became very mean. If that is how you roll, then fine, but it makes the game more enjoyable if you are nice to everyone, not just your allies. And I have had multiple games where it seemed like someone was going to die, but because they were nice and gentlemanly, they became part of a draw, even with 1 SC. So it is actually a good strategy to be nice to everyone while you play.

Good luck in your next game! Unfortunately I will be busy in a couple weeks, so I cant join any games right now.

koolaid story
When I was 10. I invited my best friend Matt over to spend the night. We wanted something to drink and luckily my mother bought 150 packs of powder koolaid. We had to of consumed about 8 gallons koolaid. We had the biggest sugar rush ever. I guess a a certain point we both past out. We woke up the next morning and my room looked like a bar after a fight. Matt and I had a headache that nobody should ever had. My mom walked in and laugh. she asked" Did you guys get koolaid drunk?"

Would it be possible to make a balanced game of Diplomacy that included nuclear missiles? They add a whole other layer to typical geopolitics and I think they could do the same for diplomacy.
