May GR Release Date?
Any news on when the ghost ratings will be released? I am sure to tumble in June's ratings, so I am looking forward to a brief celebration when May's ratings come out.

Local Elections: Does anyone really give a damn?
Ed Miliband clearly doesn't...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-27483541

With friends like Miliband, who needs enemies? But seriously, do local elections matter? And if they do how do we drum up public interest when even our politicians seem to treat them with contempt?

Social Justice issue
So I'm required to give a seminar about a social issue that is present in education. It's supposed to be something I am 'passionate' about... Just wondering what sort of social justice issues would you be passionate about?

Have you ever had the feeling that you threw too much away?
In a metaphorical sense, mostly. So if ended too much when you decided to make a change for example. Not much to add myself, just interested.

Missing yachtsmen - please help
Hey guys. My amazing friend Vicky needs our help. Her cousin (once removed) is one of these missing yachtsmen, and there's every chance they could still be found if there's a concerted effort by the relevant authorities to search for them. On behalf of the families, who are worried sick, please join me in signing this:

"Dr. Rove"--Making Doctors Phil and Who Look Legit By Comparison!
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/dr-rove-doubles-down-hillary-203900415.html Funny...I don't recall Republicans seeming too concerned about McCain's skin cancer and swollen gland while he was running against Obama in 2008. Then again, he was a man and a Republican, not a woman and a Democrat. Sexism, partisan politics, or just one more sign Karl Rove needs to have a little lie down? Why choose when you can have all three!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
19 May 14 UTC
As the video says...

Clinton spent THREE days in the hospital, NOT THIRTY.

Mr. Rove...hey, I know math isn't your strong suit--I mean, your electoral math was just a nightmare last election!--and hey, I understand...

I suck at math too.

But, 3 vs. 30. Even I can make that distinction.

15 years? Did Obama declare himself president for 2 decades?
Draugnar (0 DX)

And Obi. McCain spent a few days in the hospital after his surgery but was back in the spotlight in less than 2 weeks. Plus skin cancer doesn't affect one's brain like a concussion. Hilly had a concussion and was out of the spotlight for a full month.

No one cared how many times Gerald Ford fell down except all the comedians making jokes about it.

Ronald Reagan managed to sleep through his presidency and keep his health problems secret until he left office.

To do a Bush made it into the Japanese language after Bush I threw up on the Japanese Prime Minister at a state dinner and blamed his medication.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

@Draug:

...I didn't say McCain spent 30 days in the hospital...? O.o What are you even talking about with that first comment?

As to your third comment--

So...because Hillary decided to keep a low profile while recovering, that requires more public scrutiny than a candidate running for the Presidency while having skin cancer (and you can say it doesn't affect his brain, that's nice--it's still a health concern, so tell me why it's OK to have a fit over Hillary but not when we're one heartbeat away from President "Shootamoose," er, Palin?)

Do you need round the clock coverage the next time Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or whomever gets a concussion?

...Well, ESPN will give it to you because people flock to that kind nonsense, but still--do you REALLY need a day by day, hour by hour update?

"No, Obi, but they're quarterbacking an AFC football team--"

You're right! ...The AFC is totally irrelevant now, sorry, imagine that being an NFC quarterback, you know, on a team with an actual shot to win the Super Bowl?

:p

But really...

Are you really going to answer skin cancer < a concussion in terms of medical concerns? One can kill you, the other...not nearly so likely.

She fell, she hit her head, she recovered--that's worse than skin cancer?

(And I might add, with how much some Republicans complain--looking at you, krellin--about how much attention Hillary gets...you're saying you want MORE attention, Draug? And for what, because she hit her head, recovered, and decided not to go on Letterman and Rachel Maddow?)

" No one cared how many times Gerald Ford fell down except all the comedians making jokes about it."

^Exactly--I don't recall people launching into crisis mode like he was going to be the Patient of the Week for Dr. House, erm, I mean, *Insert 70s Medical Drama here.*

...Granted, it was...um, well...Gerald Ford as president...

But still!

"so tell me why it's OK to have a fit over Hillary but not when we're one heartbeat away from President "Shootamoose," er, Palin?"

I didn't vote for McCain for *exactly* that reason. I figured we'd end up with Palin as President and that scared the fuck out of me.

"Are you really going to answer skin cancer < a concussion in terms of medical concerns?"

One has no effect on your decision making abilities, the others leaves you talking like Muhammad Ali. Nuff said.

By that reasoning football players shouldn't be allowed to get into positions of power since they likely sustained concussions while playing. Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan played college football and Jack Kemp played professional football so who knows how much brain damage they had before politics.

"By that reasoning football players shouldn't be allowed to get into positions of power since they likely sustained concussions while playing. "

To a degree, I agree. I don't want Muhammad Ali as President. I don't want Hacksaw Jim Duggan as President. And I don't want 'Fridge Perry as President.

Any one who has ever suffered traumatic brain injury should not hold the highest office in the land. Do you really want Gary Busey as President? The guy actually *does* talk to inanimate objects.

@obiwan

Sorry that we're crossing sword again, my friend. But you're writing here absolutely begs a couple of questions:

1) Isn't accusing Mr. Rove of partisanship, in the format that you're making the accusation, also rather partisan?

2) If you're really keen on having Clinton serve as president, wouldn't you be better off emphasizing her credentials rather than simply accusing her political opponents of sexism? It seems to me that accusing people of sexism, especially without a strong foundation in facts and proof, is actually gender politics as it's very worst.

Votre ami dévoué,
Al

Henry Ford
How do we assess the legacy of Henry Ford? Should he be respected as a great man and a father of industry? Or should we condemn him as a friend of the Nazis and one of the 20th century's most prominent anti-semites?

So I can't remove the Gold Star I gave myself and I feel like an ass...
With that being said: We have a yet-unused badge that we can give to people and I think we should do something with it. As a community, I'd like us to pick a couple people that we think have significantly contributed to the site and ask kestas to award them a gold star. Is this something people are interested in? Let's use this thread to discuss the idea (or other ways of using the star), rather than discussion potential recipients.

50%+ of People >35 Years Old Know About Holocaust (Why the Jews Need Israel)
http://news.yahoo.com/holocaust-anti-semitism-global-study-154731933.html That is honestly a bit surprising to me...if for no other reason than the fact that WWII is so "popular" in different kinds of media that you'd think that number would be higher. And this is yet another reason, as atheistic as I am, I'll always maintain the Jews need Israel--those are dangerous numbers, and it's good to know the Jews have a state and army with which to defend themselves.
