May GR Release Date?
Any news on when the ghost ratings will be released? I am sure to tumble in June's ratings, so I am looking forward to a brief celebration when May's ratings come out.

Local Elections: Does anyone really give a damn?
Ed Miliband clearly doesn't...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-27483541

With friends like Miliband, who needs enemies? But seriously, do local elections matter? And if they do how do we drum up public interest when even our politicians seem to treat them with contempt?

I was going to ask you, actually. Back in the day did you see visits from the great and good of the Party a benefit or a PR disaster waiting to happen?

I'll be voting for the Socialist Equality Party, as their leaflet was the most convincing.

@ Oct - the local press loved the visits of any MPs because they were great photo opportunities, they were always well briefed before-hand and were very on-message with the party line. Blair came down one year, Prescott another.
All the trips were quite stage managed and provided good PR for the local party ,,,, of course we didn't have a Nigel Farage !!

I sort of care about local elections. A friend of mine who helped me set up a youth club is our Labour candidate so I'm sticking with him. We only have 4 local candidates Tory; LibDem, UKIP & Labour. Even though I live in an old mining village the vote is usually close, Tories generally win here but it does change to Labour quite regularly.

In the Euro elections we have Greens and a host of others standing as well, so I'll prob go green, but haven't 100% decided.
Raffy (1706 D)

Lol we have more parties than we have people ... makes it difficult to make a gouvernement
Octavious (2701 D)

A friend of mine is standing for UKIP, but luckily his patch is a little to the north of me. Would make it a difficult choice otherwise.

I was tempted to vote Green until I looked at their policies. As an environmentalist I cannot vote for a Party whose policy would be so harmful. I also can't stand their obsession for more EU integration and ideas about vastly increasing fuel duty.

Tory again, it seems.

I think they will be very grateful for your vote this time around, it could be a very interesting Friday morning after Thursday nights results
Octavious (2701 D)
20 May 14 UTC
Do you still stay to hear the results come in, Nigs, or have you grown out of such things?

It will be an interesting Friday. I suspect that the Tories won't do as bad as feared, although i'm not expecting miracles by any stretch. If UKIP score the highest I don't think it will be by much of a margin.

I'm amazed that a Tory would be considering voting Green, as the two parties stand completely opposite on almost everything.

I'm also amazed that a Tory voter can, with a straight face, declare themselves an environmentalist, but that's a separate issue.
Octavious (2701 D)
20 May 14 UTC
@ mendax

Like I said, I was tempted until I looked at their policies, which are straight out of the quirkier half of the Looney Left's hymn book. They are green only in the sense that carbon emissions will be much reduced when they destroy the economy. How they can be in favour of low carbon and anti nuclear shows them as nothing more than pitiful opportunists.

The Tories are no less environmental than Labour, and tend to defend the countryside with rather more vigour.
mendax (321 D)
20 May 14 UTC
You'll need a whole load of citations to back up your claim that their policies will destroy the economy.

Given the recent push for fracking, I don't understand how you can portray the Tories as any sort of countryside defenders. The Labour party are also pretty pants, but not quite as openly reckless.

Octavious - only some of the local election results are announced Thursday night / early Friday. Euro results arn't published until Sunday. I confess I usually stay up on general election night 'til the small hours and will probably stay up to see early results to gain a feeling of how good/bad they are.

In one sense the Euro elections can only be good. I don't agree with UKIP policies but their success will put a lot of pressure on holding a snap referendum. If we're going to have one the sooner the better.

"Do you still stay up to hear the results come in, Nigs, or have you grown out of such things?"
When I was politically active it was a great night staying up but usually I was knackered from campaigning all that week, also I used to get up at 5am on election day to deliver vote today leaflets before people went to work, then I would go to my local count which was normally at my local community hall in Farnham Road, Slough. The counts were always very politically charged and attracted all of the parties to verfy the voting, a lot of the other candidates being ex-Labour people who had been kicked out of the party for being suspect characters/cheats/criminals/plain useless and so joined the opposition or stood as independents. That might be done by 1am, by then there was no bars open to celebrate and I was ready for bed so wandered back home happy that the hard work was done for another year.
I was a bit of an organiser because I knew how to manage the contact lists on the PC and did more canvassing/door knocking than anyone else.
I look back on those days as great memories, hard work, comradeship, council meetings, policy making. As a Labour council we did things that fundamentally shaped how our town grew and what it believed in based on sound social justice policies. We were a beacon of red surrounded by a sea of blue Tory councils that of course despised us for several reasons, but mostly because we were working class and had a high ethnic population. Halcyon days......

Do you really believe Tories think that way, Nigs? Sad if you do..

Still, on the subject of Europe

So the conclusion is that when the British use 12 inches in a foot we're not clinging stubbornly on to an outdated measuring system in defiance of the EU. We are instead rejoicing in our shared European culture and heritage! Now if only the EU would bugger off a little more and let us rejoice in our shared heritage on our own. :p

Do I believe there is inherent racism in the Tory Party, I just don't believe it mate, I worked with these people, they despised the Asians, and the poor, and the working class. I'm not saying all of them, just a lot of them. Some of it was just bigotry, some a class issue, some just old people not liking immigrants. The reason why they didn't like us in Slough was because they kept losing to us and we were a better run Council at a time when the Tories were saying that Labour Councils stood for wastefulness and inefficiency, they could not quite work out how we maintained and financed our social policies. I'm not saying it is like that everywhere, it may have been just peculiar to that time and place. The Conservative Party in the last 20 years have grown up a bit with regards to non-whites and non-Christians, the ones who haven't have joined UKIP :-)

Octavious - I don't believe that the Tory Party is racist. I do know that historically Labour pushed for the Race Relations Act in the teeth of Tory opposition and that many people of conservative persuasion supported Enoch Powell's view in1968. I remember well that in the late 70's early 80's there seemed to be a reluctance on the Tories I knew to disassociate themselves with Enoch Powell's views, many saw him as a standard bearer for their position.

Amazing... In Exeter we always got on rather well with Labour. There were quite a few Labour activists I shared a few drinks with, and the Tory Labour paintball match was always fun. The only really nasty people in politics were the Socialist Workers Party (who seemed to see the existence of Tories as a personal insult) and the occasional visiting BNPer. Oh, and Raleigh... He was a Tory arse of the old school. Took part in The Apprentice briefly...

"Dr. Rove"--Making Doctors Phil and Who Look Legit By Comparison!
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/dr-rove-doubles-down-hillary-203900415.html Funny...I don't recall Republicans seeming too concerned about McCain's skin cancer and swollen gland while he was running against Obama in 2008. Then again, he was a man and a Republican, not a woman and a Democrat. Sexism, partisan politics, or just one more sign Karl Rove needs to have a little lie down? Why choose when you can have all three!

50%+ of People >35 Years Old Know About Holocaust (Why the Jews Need Israel)
http://news.yahoo.com/holocaust-anti-semitism-global-study-154731933.html That is honestly a bit surprising to me...if for no other reason than the fact that WWII is so "popular" in different kinds of media that you'd think that number would be higher. And this is yet another reason, as atheistic as I am, I'll always maintain the Jews need Israel--those are dangerous numbers, and it's good to know the Jews have a state and army with which to defend themselves.
