Why is there still so much war in the world?
2014 and there are still lots of wars going on, have we not progressed at all as a species, we think we are above animals but we are not because they only kill for food, we kill for all sorts of bullshit excuses. Is that what education has given us, more reasons to kill our fellow homo-sapiens?

I don't rightly know, Nigs, but if I were to hazard a guess I'd say it was something to do with insufficient donations to webdip, the Tory government, and the lack of links to BBC articles.

Octavious - I don't think you are right there, are you 12 ??
You may not have covered topics like this in your school curriculum yet but when you do sit near the front and get yourself informed, being silly might amuse your peers in class but it won't get you a job and you'll end up just another benefits scrounger like the rest of your family, living off rats in your council houses.....

Lol! When you can write an opening post that isn't wrong in almost every detail other than what year it is, I will take it seriously. Until then using it as an opportunity to revive the once popular pastime of quoting Mavis is as good a use as any.

Idiocy is the bane of humanity in this modern world. It is something that no manner of education can remedy.

If anyone feels like debating this point, I'd be happy to write a supporting argument.

"we think we are above animals"

Speak for yourself. We are animals, so we can't be above animals in general. Simple.

Now, if you mean above other animals, well, there are a lot of good exceptions, but in general we became much more efficient at killing our fellow animals (including humans and other animals).

Many also work hard to prevent wars and killings though, and work towards a better world proactively. I can't think of another species that does that. Too bad that a lot of people still feel like killing for all sorts of reasons though.

Ok then, I will rewrite the OP substituting the truth for Niger rhetoric claptrap.

War has been reduced substantially.

2014 and the blight of warfare on humanity is at a new low. Our progress as a species has been nothing short of stunning. We are the highest from of life on Earth, but despite our advances remain among the many who kill for reasons other than simply for food. Education continues to improve, however, and better equip each new generation with the ability to avoid violence and build a better future.

War srves a noble purpose. It serves to eliminate leaders with stupid deas andntheir idiot followers that would otherwise corrupt people and fuck up the pool party for their descendants. Also, if your some Libtard that believes humans are "destroying" the earth and are little more than a parasite, you should celebrate them killing off one another.

What makes anyone think humans shouldn't war with each other? You think you are going to live forever? What's wrong with being cannon fodder for the amusement of those slavering masses that like watching live-streaming human drama and destruction on CNN?

War really serves a purpose, the greatest invention and descoveries were for war use.
also peniciline was discovered during the war and it changed the world for good.
Not only that,Newton's laws received more importance because of their potential use in balistics.

"also peniciline was discovered during the war"

Pretty sure that's not true. Or else you're talking about some kind of penis pill, in which case you may be right, you'd have to talk to someone with more knowledge of those pills like Draug.

The challenge of mass-producing this drug was daunting. On March 14, 1942, the first patient was treated for streptococcal septicemia with US-made penicillin produced by Merck & Co.
[32]
Half of the total supply produced at the time was used on that one patient. By June 1942, just enough US penicillin was available to treat ten patients.[33]
In July 1943, the War Production Board
drew up a plan for the mass distribution of penicillin stocks to Allied troops fighting in Europe.[34]
The results of fermentation research on corn steep liquor
at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory at Peoria, Illinois
, allowed the United States to produce 2.3 million doses in time for the invasion of Normandy
in the spring of 1944. After a worldwide search in 1943, a mouldycantaloupe
 in a Peoria, Illinois
market was found to contain the best strain of penicillin for production using the corn steep liquor process.[35]
Large-scale production resulted from the development of deep-tank fermentation by chemical engineer Margaret Hutchinson Rousseau
.[36]
As a direct result of the war and the War Production Board, by June 1945, over 646 billion units per year were being produced.[34]

Engaging in a war is one of the things that distinguishes humans from animals. I do overalls agree with the idea that it would probably be better without wars but I find it mildly humorous that someone is posting this on a war game site.

tvrocks - do you not see that playing a strategy war game and engaging in warfare are very different things, when was the last time you saw a family dragged out into the street, raped and executed.
On the other hand you may find that 'mildly humorous'

"we kill for all sorts of bullshit excuses"

Bullshit excuses are what puts boots on the ground. People can get behind a bullshit excuse like "those people are ethnically inferior" or "those people posses weapons of mass destruction and will use them without discretion" or "they worship a different version of the same god." What you can't get people to support is an idea like "we need war for population control." Because historically, that has been the driving cultural factor (citation, Marvin Harris). Ultimately, the extent to which we do war is negligible because war is just a devastating way of undergoing some type of change within a nation/state/people group, and is therefore going to be a constant setback of civilization:

The US invading and disrupting multiple countries in the Middle East is predicated on the cultural need to prevent an organized Islamic empire from challenging the US as an international hegemon (and meanwhile, the American public feels uncertain as to why we participated in those wars at all...). We have other methods of doing so, like supporting the existence of an Israeli state and like imposing economic sanctions on Iran, but the underlying issue is that a reunified Ottoman Empire would pose a huge thorn in the US's side. (citation, George Friedman and STRATFOR)

Another easy example is Russia's continued presence in Ukraine and their continued (although not as publicized) pressuring on other Eastern European states (like Belarus) to loosen their economic independence in favor of stronger ties to the Russian Federation. Putin may say that he is doing this to support ethnic Russian populations, or to strengthen Russia's (and neighbors') economy, but the underlying cause is that there is increasing pressure on all sides of Russia from ethnic minorities (like Chechens and the Sakha Republic) that are pushing the Russian Federation towards collapse. In order to protect their own interests, Russia must expand west or else face the historical alternative - Europe expanding east. Whether Putin knows that Russia faces an existential crisis by not pushing west is unimportant. The fact is that the Russian people will expand west under any guise necessary because the operations of culture are guided by an invisible hand. If Putin tried to pull out of Crimea, he could not stop the ethnic Russians in Ukraine from trying to join Russia. It doesn't matter what any leader does to his nation, really, the world will adjust and do what is culturally necessary. (citation, George Friedman again.)

So, the fact of the matter is that if we didn't go to war, there would still be some kind of cultural pressure to resolve whatever factors lead to the war. Whether that be some form of racial tension, mere population control, the enforcement of a policy of industrial expansion, or an attempt to abolish slavery and increase federal authority. Go ahead and challenge me on this. I've bought into this theory, and I'd like to practice defending it...

Oh, and yeah, it really sucks for a lot of the individuals affected by war. But in all seriousness, it always is intended for the good of the nation (nation referring to people of national identity, not the governing forces of those people). And as George Friedman put it, governors play their parts like in a potential game of chess where people rotate out each move. Each man's one move is strictly limited to the environment he is introduced to. There's only one best move he can make, so there's really no free choice in what he does. A Republican leader will just continue whatever the guy before him did, and if it were a Democrat in charge, he would do the same things, but give them different names. A true assessment of politics starts with a study of nature-culture.

Don't make me in here and bitch-slap you all again with your ridiculous arguments. "Oh why oh why can't everyone be as smart as I am and put an end to war....blah blah blah"

Fine, you promise me you will lay down your arms under any and all situations. I'll be over tomorrow to rape you wife, children, brother and then your dog. @nigee: stop assuming that people are sadists. I would not find that at all funny. I was just saying that the irony involved with posting this thread here is mildly humorous. Real warfare and war games are obviously different. However, i would find it mildly humorous if someone posted a thread about why there is rape and executions in ther world on a forum of a game with those two things as the plot.

@tvroks people are sadists.
The human society wants to be superior to animals but we are definitely not,in fact the majority of the people will turn out to be real cruel if given the chance, and war is the closest to anarchy we get so people get a feeling
taos (281 D)
21 Apr 14 UTC
That no one will punish them, also god loses his powers in war and people tend to think everything is allowed, war gets to ugly side of many that in regular times you wouldn't imagine thay are capable of doing such monstrousity .
Just enough to see people acting during times of civil disorder to get the idea.
taos (281 D)

And one more thing: it's not a war site,it's diplomacy!
tvrocks (388 D)
21 Apr 14 UTC
@taos: basicall everything that you said is up for debate. Are you saying that all people are sadists because that's definitely not true. Basically all animals will turn out to be cruel if given the chance, while humans would be less likely to. I also disagree that war is the closest to anarchy we can get. A closer thing to anarchy is having an extremely weak government which can stop basically nothing. Whether god has powers at all in the first place can be debated as his/ her existence is not a definite thing, (I actually do believe in a god, but am trying to remain unbiased in this) and whether he loses the powers that he supposedly had during war, or whether people tend to think everything is allowed, or lastly whether it gets to the ugly side of many are up for debate. Lastly, the basis of the game is to declare war against enemies, to try staying at peace or neutral with them, or to just backstab them. Also, what else can a gunboat game be called other than a war game?
taos (281 D)
21 Apr 14 UTC
Yes people are sadists if given the chance, not everyone but it's definitely a freudian issue, something about childwood plus sheep behavior and you will be surprised what people are capable in times of intense stress and after passed the border of no way back that is killing another human, the adrenaline, seratonin and all this brain posttraumatic shock can change the human brain for ever to the point some of us) civil
taos (281 D)
21 Apr 14 UTC
Civilized modern well educated will see them as not humane.
the possibility of turning into a victimizer instead of feeling a victim is the key to the demons inside every man.
And don't start this argument about gunboat,it's diplomacy at it's best, just gunboating seems easy but there is a reason for some great gunboaters in this site being better than the rest.
Cause they use diplomacy in every movement ,support and build.

Web based diplomacy or face to face???
I got to play f2f for the first time in 25+ years. It was quite enjoyable to have open banter with other players and fully articulate what your thoughts are, but after returning to the game so many years later and now playing on the web, with drop down menus and computer making the moves for you. I think I like the web better. I would however like to play f2f every once in awhile.

Guys, there's too many serious threads here. We need some fun. Let's write a story.
OK, here are the rules.

One by one, we each add on to the story. You can only add one sentence at a time, and each post must be separated by at least one other post. Your sentence must be grammatically correct and within the realm of possibility. If we do well with this one, we might move on to something more outlandish. I'll post a final edit of each paragraph, time permitting, when we get enough. Have fun with it!

Why F Mur?
Sorry if this question has been answered, I couldn't find it anywhere. In the Modern Diplomacy II variant, we have a fleet in Murmansk. But in the variant rules (that we link to!!!) there's supposed to be an army in Murmansk.

Why the change? It seems to me that it just gives Russia less options when Russia is already under a lot of pressure in the first year.
