Does anyone else love that this site has not changed its look in like eight years?
Because I actually seriously love that about it. Nothing else in my life on the internet still looks like it did then, and it looks fine.

Surrender option
I am thinking that having a surrender option (to your attacker, or one of your allies that you border) might add a very nice twist to the game. Often we see people give up, but giving them a chance to surrender their territories would take diplomacy to another level, where you could negotiate with someone, give him your armies, and watch your enemy deal with a much bigger force. Thoughts?

The Favorite Author Tournament, Round 1, Match 1--#1 Shakespeare vs. #64 Virgil
And we kick off our daily tournament with a great match-up...the most celebrated author in the English language vs. the most celebrated Roman poet of all-time...Aeneid vs. Henriad...
#64-ranked Virgil (just beating out James Joyce and Ovid to get here) vs. #1-seed Shakespeare--+1 for your choice below, based on influence, quality, popularity, importance, personal taste, and all that fun stuff.

Haha actually no I really don't care I use this thread to kill time waiting for the mafia thread to refresh, but as long as I'm here, someone who would throw Shakespeare under the bus for almost anyone is a sad contrarian indeed
Thucydides (864 D(B))
10 Apr 14 UTC
Oh I almost forgot,

Lmao
The irony is that I'm doing the same, although that's only whilst I use the mafia thread to procrasitnate from real life. And why a sad contrarian? If i'm voting on how much I like him? And I never said almost anyone, but to prefer 20 authors to one person, when you're widely read (read virgil properly, something you admitted to not having done), isn't so crazy. #lmao #lolz

i still don't get all the love for vergil. you clearly didn't have to translate him in school.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
10 Apr 14 UTC
Yeah can someone tell me anything about the content of his shit instead of talking about influence, longevity, writing style, etc?

The reason I love Shakespeare so much is he has such good philosophical content woven into interesting plotlines. The meter and word choice are great but to me they are secondary perks

"and for all your 'lmao' bravado, the very fact that you guys cared enough to change the system shows that you're taking it rather seriously"

...or that we decided it'd be more fun with Shakes and James Joyce over Stephenie Meyer?

ghug had a good idea, I went with said good idea...

It seems like you're the one taking this whole thing way too seriously.
i would hate any classical author if i had to translate them, as it is i love homer, aristophanes etc.

i love classical stories, mythology, and he tells his stories in such a beautiful way. Just the Aeneid offers so, so much. Nationalistic spirits (before nationalism!), love, heartbreak, despair, adventure etc., and he does it all masterfully in an interwoven fashion no less.
replacing meyer with joyce was a good idea, although rousseau would have been better
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Meh, adventure and all that shit is in every singly trashy fiction book eg Harry potter . To me what makes any fiction good are the themes it presents - and the questions it asks: is revenge ever justified? What does it take to break a friendship? What is the duty of a wife or husband to their partner? Is a decision made in the throes of despair still perhaps the right decision? Is life worth living, and why, if so? Etc
didn't just say adventure, and i'm happy you asked those things - actually read the aeneid and tell me there aren't those themes, those questions
Thucydides (864 D(B))

I'm sure there probably are but it would be cool if this tournie could be a chance for boosters to talk about them rather than just sayin "go read it" because I'm not going to be reading Virgil anytime soon lol. Too busy finishing off the complete works of Thoreau
ghug (5068 D(B))

Thucy, I talked about influence because it was being contested by Obi. I love both of them as authors (and I did have to translate Vergil in school) and I honestly think that it should merely come down to preference, whereas I feel like you, obi, semck et. al. were of the opinion that the bard is undoubtedly the greatest and a comparison is invalid.

And SocDis covered what's good about him in a broad respect, but the man could also turn a phase like Shakespeare and do things with Latin that aren't even possible in English while keeping perfect meter. Go find a recording of someone reading it in Latin and you'll understand how beautiful it is even though you don't understand what's being said.

"What is the duty of a wife or husband to their partner? Is a decision made in the throes of despair still perhaps the right decision? Is life worth living, and why, if so?"
The Aeneid deals with these questions as much as any other work, imho. A central theme involves Aeneas assuming the role of patriarch, first of his family, then of his tribe of Trojans, and ultimately of Rome. Vergil explores the responsibilities and duties that come with that role throughout the work (particularly relevant to the pater familias of Rome).
You should ask Dido if life is worth living :)

Playing with people I know
I have read the rules that state that you must not enter a game with any pre-made alliances (metagaming). I'd like to host a game with people I know but we don't have enough players to make a full game. Instead I'm considering allowing the empty spaces to be filled by people we don't know.

Even if we play like we don't know each other are we likely to be accused of cheating and therefore is this not worth bothering with unless I have 7 people to make a private game?

Who's the Bard of WebDip? The Favorite Author Tournament!
List your 4 favorite authors below (if one of your four has already been picked, choose another.) Once we have at least 16 authors (or more, if we get more interest) we'll line them up, the first author chosen vs. the last one posted (so, yeah, Shakespeare vs. whoever the last guy/gal is, lol), and then the second vs. the second to last, etc. in +1 spinoff threads (so, yeah, Shakespeare vs. Challenger X/Y). :p Highest total after 24 hours moves on...repeat until we choose the Bard of WebDip!
