Does anyone else love that this site has not changed its look in like eight years?
Because I actually seriously love that about it. Nothing else in my life on the internet still looks like it did then, and it looks fine.

Surrender option
I am thinking that having a surrender option (to your attacker, or one of your allies that you border) might add a very nice twist to the game. Often we see people give up, but giving them a chance to surrender their territories would take diplomacy to another level, where you could negotiate with someone, give him your armies, and watch your enemy deal with a much bigger force. Thoughts?

Playing with people I know
I have read the rules that state that you must not enter a game with any pre-made alliances (metagaming). I'd like to host a game with people I know but we don't have enough players to make a full game. Instead I'm considering allowing the empty spaces to be filled by people we don't know.

Even if we play like we don't know each other are we likely to be accused of cheating and therefore is this not worth bothering with unless I have 7 people to make a private game?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Coming out Friday...who's gonna see? Daughters already have our date night planned - previews look good.
krellin (80 DX)

Coincidentally, the studio has already released a teaser on the next movie: "Captain America: Leading From Behind", in which our brave hero realizes he's exercised too much influence over the world, and decides to take a long breather on the golf course while evil pervades the world...it's a cross-over move where the freedom-loving capitalist Tony Stark once again dons the suit and saves the day despite our back-sliding government hero. Interesting concept...

How do we know the good guys from the bad guys....If their shooting at you their bad! Lol this movie looks much better then the first Captain America. Mavel does a great job with their moves unlike DC comics who ruined man of steel. The only thing they do well with is batman.

02 Apr 14 UTC
I started to watch a Sherlock Holmes movie once...was bored and didn't finish it, if I recall correctly. Just doesn't really interest me (previews with lots of fighting -- i.e. sherlock Holmes meets Iron Man didn't seem to fit...)

Maybe I'll give it another go, though.
ezra willis (305 D)
02 Apr 14 UTC
Serlock Homes a game of shadows is much more fun then you may think. You start the movie and 10:1 you won't want to get up until its done. I have not seen the first Serlock homes so I can't say whether or not it's any good but you don't need to in order to watch the second.

Meh. I've been disappointed with where the Captain America movies have gone. Cap should be capping Nazis during WWII, not fighting fantastical supervillains in the present day. He was conceived as a morale booster during WWII, and that's where he belongs. He's a super soldier, not a super hero. Stop trying to make him into one. I picture Cap leading a fictionalized charge on Omaha Beach with a 1911 and his shield, not screwing around with whoever the hell the villain was in the last Avengers movie.

Today's youth don't give a crap about WWII.

Which is understandable as they don't know anyone who fought in it...
krellin (80 DX)
02 Apr 14 UTC
@Oct - and very few of them were taught anything about it of substance.

That doesn't mean it isn't an important historical event to understand...but I don't blame kids for not caring about what they don't know.

That being said, it's a hell of a historical read, both from a pure history standpoint, as well as reading a good war story, such as "Guadalcanal Diary"
World War II, yeah, I've heard about that. Isn't that when the Normans invaded England?
Octavious (2701 D)
02 Apr 14 UTC
Important bit of history, certainly, but without knowing a grandparent or parent who was in it, just one of several important bits. I'm surprised they don't get taught about it over your way though.

Having said that, what I learned from history class and what I was told by my grandparents were so far removed from each other they might as well have been different events.
Maniac (184 D(B))
02 Apr 14 UTC
Just got back from seeing Capt America - Its a good film, without being a great film, worth a watch, I won't spoil it for you all.
krellin (80 DX)
02 Apr 14 UTC
Octavious - several important bits, yes...but pretty damned significant inasmuch as the current political make-up of the world was shaped a great deal by the war, as there has been no major war since to disrupt any of the alliances formed there...which includes things such as the strong US/Japanese ties, ironically enough. It is that war which distributed US troops around the globe, and extended the US sphere of influence dramatically, which it is only now starting to lose some of. So, I'd say that it is a pretty damned important piece of history, necessary to understand the world today.

My problem with today's youth is that they have never been exposed to elements of history that they would enjoy learning about. Back when I was in high school, my less-historically-astute friends always responded positively whenever I started a conversation with an obscure anecdote about the Battle off Samar, the Aleutian Islands Campaign, or Operation Neptune. They'd always say something along the lines of "How come they never teach us anything that cool in history class?"

We wonder why kids say "I HATE SCHOOL!" when we try to shove boring bullshit down their throats. Sophomore boys should be reading Tom Clancy, not Shakespeare. They should be analyzing the Guadalcanal Campaign, not the fashion of the Civil War era. There is no point in trying to teach kids shit that they have no desire to learn about. They'll learn the information well enough to regurgitate it on a test then forget it as soon as the course is completed. We'd be better off letting students study what they want, and trust their curiosity to lead them to knowledge. The kid who's reading Clancy instead of Shakespeare right now might get hooked on English as a subject and will happily study Shakespeare 10 years from now, but if that same kid tries to read Shakespeare now he'll get turned off and never learn to appreciate English.

Anyone who likes reading about WWII should read these two books. The first one is a combat history of the American 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. The second is an extensive analysis of the Battle off Samar.

If you can find a 16-year-old that appreciates Shakespeare or can give a comprehensive discourse about the ramifications of the Teapot Dome Scandal, take a fucking picture because you have encountered a critically endangered species.

Put simply, the more "badass" parts of subjects should be used as a vehicle to get young adults interested in historically despised subjects. Kids these days would fucking love President Theodore Roosevelt if they knew as little as 10% of his life story.
ERAUfan97 (549 D)

now that's one of the few things I remember from D-Day: the importance of the 82nd Airborne division.

I've been a study of WWII and find most all literature and movies and documentaries about the subject fascinating.

they might know some Vietnam vet, but even Korean vets are hard to find these days
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

I'm done ranting after this post. but I'll say one more thing:

This concept works for any subject. Let's say you have a kid who likes hiking and you want to teach him geometry. Get him a map and a protractor and ask him to figure out how to find his position by triangulation. Let's say you get a kid who loves working on cars and you want to teach him algebra. Ask him to make a formula that estimates his car's 0-60 time based on horsepower, torque, mass, et cetera. Let's say you get a football player and you want to teach him introductory physics. Have him calculate his acceleration during his 40-yard dash. Let's say you have a kid who always doodles during lectures. Teach him English by having him write a story about a struggling artist.

Number of personally known living veterans is irrelevant. There are plenty of Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq veterans alive and kids still don't know dick about any of those wars. Hell, I'd bet that not even 5% of all high schoolers could point to any of those three places on a globe.
ssorenn (0 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
the knowledge of those wars are given as anecdotes from the people who fought them, where the fuck do you think most of the stories came from about WWII.

also korean war was only 9 years after WWII, theres not a lot left

After watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this week, now I *must" go see it this weekend. The ep referenced lots of spoilers from the movie (damn it! I was hoping they'd handle it more like they did Thor: The Dark World).

Who's the Bard of WebDip? The Favorite Author Tournament!
List your 4 favorite authors below (if one of your four has already been picked, choose another.) Once we have at least 16 authors (or more, if we get more interest) we'll line them up, the first author chosen vs. the last one posted (so, yeah, Shakespeare vs. whoever the last guy/gal is, lol), and then the second vs. the second to last, etc. in +1 spinoff threads (so, yeah, Shakespeare vs. Challenger X/Y). :p Highest total after 24 hours moves on...repeat until we choose the Bard of WebDip!
