What the Heck...
...was I thinking about. Going through my writings, trying to catalog what I have complete, incomplete, what needs editing (all of it...), etc, and I came across a document with just these two paragraphs (see next post). Probably was drunk when I wrote this one (not proud, just saying). Thoughts?

Newbie question
Is it considered bad form to take advantage of the situation when a player appears to have left a game? More specifically is it bad form to resubmit orders just prior to a turn ending when it that player won't be submitting orders? Just wondering about the etiquette of that scenario on this site. Thanks in advance!

Yes and no.

Completely legit, but he could be playing you and plan to submit orders at the last second.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I would absolutely take advantage of such a situation, for what it's worth.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

If a player doesn't submit orders early in a game (like first two years), I typically will vote to cancel. Late game... it depends.
daniyhungre (100 D)
20 Dec 13 UTC
If it's early I would just draw it though

He isn't talking about taking advantage of a CD. He is talking about a player who appears about to NMR.
tendmote (100 D(B))

Bad form is considered good form, in general. Beware that someone may take over the vacant power and strike unexpectedly.

Doesn't sound likes it's an explicit taboo. Thanks for the answers! And yes, I know that could be a ploy by the "departed" party.

It's not only acceptable, its encouraged! Gotta teach people somehow!
krellin (80 DX)
20 Dec 13 UTC
No - someone will take advantage of the situation. Assuming there is a CD, it is often good form for the remianing players to cancel or draw - so this leaves the following:

1. You "take advantage" and then the game Cancels or Draws - so it didn't matter anyway

OR

2. You take advantage, expecting fair players will Cancel / Draw...but they don't, meaning SOMEONE is trying to take advantage....so let it be you.

Didn't we just have this question?
Gambit (386 D)
20 Dec 13 UTC
The other question was: Is it bad form to deliberately set up this situation (I.e. make it seem like you aren't going to put in moves so your opponent will change theirs)?
tendmote (100 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
@Gambit - come on man, the fake "absence" is good form. It's encouraged.
If feel like a purist would disagree tendmote. Whatever, who cares?
Draugnar (0 DX)

The purist, the real purist, should love it. Whatever gives you and advantage goes in the board game. This is just another advantage.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
Well actually, the "purist" would be a face-to-face player where no NMR could happen. So, there's that.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
We need the system from vDip where if someone NMR's, it can be set to add an extra 5 minutes. If it happens again, it kicks them out so the game isn't affected.

I don't like to Cancel after a CD because
1) I want to play the game, win lose or draw
2) I don't want the CD to get their money back
3) I want to see who it was
4) I want the CD to get a Lose/Resign on their stats
Is there any other reasons?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
20 Dec 13 UTC
Typically I'll cancel in 1901-1902 because we can pretty quickly start a new game.

Take good care of your teeth ASAP
Everybody start taking good care of your teeth as soon as you can. I started late, which is better than never, but now all the fillings I got when I was a teenager are wearing out, so I’m reliving all of those experiences at a fast tempo.

Money Philosophy
Liberals: Always focused on how to get other people's money, how to take money away from "rich" to give to others that have not earned it, but are somehow "owed" it (because they were born).

Conservatives: Focused on how to grow personal wealth, improve one's self and be financially self-reliant so as to not burden others.

If someone makes a promise to help a player in a future game for help in a current game, is that metagaming? Seems like an easy yes. What is the penalty for metagaming? Seems like a ban is the answer.
