Newbie question
Is it considered bad form to take advantage of the situation when a player appears to have left a game? More specifically is it bad form to resubmit orders just prior to a turn ending when it that player won't be submitting orders? Just wondering about the etiquette of that scenario on this site. Thanks in advance!

I'm more curious about the precise methods by which Facebook does this. I'd like to block the script, whatever it may be.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
17 Dec 13 UTC
Most likely javascript with events listening to when you type in text boxes. You won't be able to stop it unless you disable javascript on your browser (Facebook won't work too well then).
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
17 Dec 13 UTC
Though using something like ad blocker you can probably find a way to jury rig a way to disable the class being called for that functionality unless it's tied directly into the class responsible for posting the message you type.
pangloss (363 D)
17 Dec 13 UTC
Well, I managed to block read receipts with Adblock, so I'll take a look and see what I can do here.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
17 Dec 13 UTC
Probably being the key word there, trying to just block the particular code that is capturing the text you type would be a serious hacking feat. If I'm right and there are specific javascript triggered events that fire off and send your unsubmitted text off to Facebook's database, you might be able to run an additional script that destroys those particular event triggers.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
17 Dec 13 UTC
It would make for a fun coding project, I might give it a shot over the holidays. Though now that the functionality is becoming public knowledge I suspect some bored professional coder will have a block out in a few days.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Dec 13 UTC
Actually, it shouldn't be too hard to remove all event triggers related to keyup/down or changes to text inputs, that would leave onsubmit event intact. If it even need onsubmit as the default action will submit data... Also at the moment fbook claim to only collect meta-data about your unsent messages.

Alternatively, you might be able to add an event which prevents other events - if it triggers first; jQuery has some functions for that...

@dharma perhaps if you had posted about it then it wouldn't be news here...

@jmo Damn, i thought you were going to give percentsge of people who have muted Krellin :( - perhaps we can get a petition to default muting anyone who gets over 50% of the userbase to mute them??

Alternative methods involve using a 3rd party editor (ie write message outside of facebook and then post them) using a script which takes what you submit to your personal webserver and send it to the fbook api, or NOT using facebook...
krellin (80 DX)
18 Dec 13 UTC
Wow...having read most of the article now, it's such a non-issue for people to bunch the undies up about...

1. It's a conversation about Facebook...need I say more?

2. You seriously think anything you do is private on the internet, especially on Facebook? <chuckles...> How about just don't feel the need to barf every thought on your wall...then you will probably not type and delete to begin with...oh, sorry, seelf-censor.

3. It's a conversation about Facebook...need I say more?
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
18 Dec 13 UTC
Still an interesting technical discussion at a minimum. But I agree that working to make your actions on Facebook private is silly and a waste of time.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
18 Dec 13 UTC
Oh Krelly-poo can you not see the interest? From a psych point of view - what are people self-censoring and why? But it would be really interesting to understand, but also rather hard to experiment on ethically...

And facebook may have gotten around that by legal t&c and clever javascript which makes their site behave in unexpected ways... When a service predicts your search results before you've finished typing this is obvious, so i guess this shouldn't come as a surprise.

tendmote (100 D(B))

Delete your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts. All that ever happens is you snoop around on them and waste time. Nothing good comes out of it. Then once in a while something creepy happens, which maybe could have been creepier, and you have to "manage" your settings yet again, wasting more time. It's all hassle and no benefit. Twitter, for all it's modest/stupid ambitions, is actually all the better for being so basic. It's a megaphone, use it if you want (I don't, but that's me. At least it does what it says on the label.)

Half of my weekend plans are usually arranged by friends as Facebook events, and I get software job recruitment emails daily on LinkedIn. So there is a purpose...
krellin (80 DX)
18 Dec 13 UTC
@Orath - oh, I certainly see the interest from Facebooks point of view in watching *everything* you do, just as Google does and has been for years. None of this is new.

I'm just shocked and amused at all the bleeting sheep that act surprised every time (GASP!) we find out that Facebook is behaving in a naughty way towards you, and that (GASP!) we have no privacy once we make the conscious decision to electronically connect to somebody's business, through privately owned lines of communication.

Tendmote is the only sensible voice here *IF* you are so concerned about privacy.

I think Facebook can be a great tool as y2k points out - I use it to keep in touch with certain people - but I'm not idiotic enough to pretend I have privacy or think/pretend I have a "right" to privacy there...and therefore what I post (or think about posting and don't post) is severely limited by common sense....

...common sense...something that is *severely* lacking in our youthful "Look at ME!" generation who thinks every burp and fart needs to be posted on-line...and then gets shocked when it bites them in the ass....
krellin (80 DX)

@y2k - ...and if you are frequently planning group trips to the bar via Facebook, your next potential employer might find that disappointing...
tendmote (100 D(B))
18 Dec 13 UTC
@Krellin the difference between what Google does and what Facebook + LinkedIn do is that FB and LI have a history of eventually "spilling the beans" publicly. Google turns you out to advertisers, certainly, but doesn't force you to sit there managing settings in order not to communicate shit to the world.

Check out the bottom of this page:

http://www.active.com/san-francisco-ca/running/kaiser-permanente-san-francisco-half-marathon-and-amp-5k-2014

Do you think these people know their conversation is public? Facebook sucks! And the more it vacuums in, the more it dumps out, if it's track record is any guide.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Dec 13 UTC
@tendmote: I'm confused. Why would they think their conversation isn't public?
tendmote (100 D(B))
18 Dec 13 UTC
@steephie22 Maybe there's some kind of generational misunderstanding here, but why would two specific people deciding to do a 5-kilometer-walk be something anyone would want to broadcast to the public on a third-party registration page? I'm assuming they didn't know where the messages were ending up.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Dec 13 UTC
I've seen much more stupid things going online. There are enough people who like to simply post everything online...

You won't find a pic of me online though, so it's not like I know the details of why anyone would post everything online...

You have to understand though that many people practically never turn off their phone because they're too busy telling the world they can't sleep because they're too busy with their phone these days.

I notice it around me too, even though I'm with the smarter kids of my age :)

They basically get pissed when they are not allowed to look on their phone in class, and just the other day a girl in my class cried because her phone was taken away from her for exactly 2 hours.

I don't understand it either, but I think it doesn't take that long until we live in a society where not being allowed to use your phone after midnight is a reason to run away from home for much more people than you'd think.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
18 Dec 13 UTC
@krellin, for most that would be good advice. Personally, I'm not concerned at all given that I drink and blaze with my coworkers and my boss, and all recruiting emails I get seem to emphasize wanting good software engineers that also are laid back and know how to have fun. There's nothing on my Facebook I wouldn't mind current or future employers seeing. It's not like I'm planning or attending coke parties or weed parties on Facebook, I keep it legal and fun.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Dec 13 UTC
^Run away after they have their phone back, of course. I mean, imagine being on the road without a phone... Looking at the traffic is so boring... I'd rather look at my phone...

And before you know their next tweet is:

"I got a tweet while driving my bike and when I was replying I got hit by a car lolz #awkward..."
steephie22 (182 D(S))

"It's not like I'm planning or attending coke parties or weed parties"

Others would consider that a reputation blown. It's all subjective I suppose.

@Steephie - You need a phone that talks to you when you get messages and can use voice/speech recognition to reply. My Nokia Lumia 928 Windows 8 Phone is great for that. Bluetooth with the car and I can listen to incoming messages and reply with my voice.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Dec 13 UTC
I don't need such a phone. I check my phone when I have nothing better to do, basically. Checking mail, doing some diplomacy...
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Dec 13 UTC
"Usually they just give you some on the spot. It's much more efficient."

I suppose that makes some sense, but how do you find the junks? Surely some communication is useful? Just giving it to by-passers seems like a way to get out of bussiness soon, either because you get busted or because you don't get paid.

Coke sucks. The two times I've done it I just felt energetic, and after 45 minutes you come down and just want more of it. I'll stick with red bull.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Coke i've heard described as the asshole drug, it makes you feel great, think you are great and generally act like an asshole, at least from other people's point of view. So if you want to be seen as an asshole, then it is probably the drug for you!

My only experiences have been second or third hand though.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Draugnar: I don't know :P

I don't even do soda, honestly :P

Apple juice and crisps is as far as I'm going, while I'm actually legally allowed to drink alcohol for another 13 days. Minimum age is 18 in the new year. Not like anyone cares. Most local governments don't even intend to enforce the law.

I don't care about the law though; I just don't see why I would drink.

My pilosophy is quite simple: when I really need something to cheer me up some day, I can always try a soda, since I've pretty much never had it before. If that doesn't cheer me up, I can try eating more than healthy. If that doesn't work, I can try some alcohol. If that doesn't work, well, then I'm in serious shit already :P

I like my life and I don't feel the need to try less healthy stuff, because, what good can come from it when I like it more than what I'm eating/drinking now? It will become normal soon enough, but that doesn't make it less unhealthy.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
18 Dec 13 UTC
I can be very original with what I do eat though.

Today I tried pancake with baked beans. Kinda liked it.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@steephie - Over here, you would be grandfathered in. They don't take away a privilege just because a law raises the age. Are you sure you won't be grandfathered in over there?

Money Philosophy
Liberals: Always focused on how to get other people's money, how to take money away from "rich" to give to others that have not earned it, but are somehow "owed" it (because they were born).

Conservatives: Focused on how to grow personal wealth, improve one's self and be financially self-reliant so as to not burden others.
