Newbie question
Is it considered bad form to take advantage of the situation when a player appears to have left a game? More specifically is it bad form to resubmit orders just prior to a turn ending when it that player won't be submitting orders? Just wondering about the etiquette of that scenario on this site. Thanks in advance!

So apparently this has been done here before, but the old group died out.

As I mentioned on a recent thread, I joined here after playing at other sites because I heard it had a good live game community. But I have been frustrated by the large numbers of (1) early CDs and the disputes about how to handle, (2) mid-late game CDs that kill stalemates.

A poster on that thread suggested that there used to be a group of live gamers here who would have password protected games. The rules I propose are as follows:

NMR in 1901 or 1902 : draw. Cant affect gr or points.
CDs after 1902: handled at discretion of players in game.

Whatever player NMRs or CDs will be banned from the club, and their name called out here. One free pass will be given for forgetfulness or real life.

I will handle administration. I will create an online spreadsheet of those interested. We can also post live games here, and interested players can pm the creator for the password. I will keep a running list of those who have CDed.

Please post if youre interested in being part of this so I can add you to a spreadsheet. I welcome any other thoughts or suggestions.

Just a clarifying question, but would you guys be mostly interested in press games or gunboat? I typically only play press, wta, and anonymous, mostly because I'm terrible at gunboat.
virtuslex (483 D(S))
13 Dec 13 UTC
I like, and am open to, boat and press. I play wta and ppsc the same way - play to win or be part of the smallest draw - so that doesnt affect me. Mostly I am trying to create a way to determine reliability.

I will put one restriction on joining (other than expressing interest). No more than 5 resigns prior to joining - one way of presecuring reliability.

13 Dec 13 UTC
CCGA4 - I meant 5%. But, per the rules above, only join games if you have time going forward.

And goldfinger, thanks. That is somewhat of the idea. I figure those who are reliable are also those most likely to be at least semi-skilled. If 150cc is active, I certainly havent heard of it or seen any pw live games, so I apologize if I am stepping on toes. I was told there was an organization (sounds like 150cc) that died.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC
Hey, I think I'm actually part of that club! Is it still going?
150cc is the organization that died. It was only ever really active for a few months.

Virtus, I would suggest against making people register as entrants to the club. Finding seven players online, that have already pre-registered, isn't too likely (especially not near the beginning). Anyone who is currently online and reads inside the thread that a game is forming may opt to join, understanding the rules.

Speaking of the rules, here are my suggestions:

NMR Spring 01: Cancel
CD in 01-02: Draw (some may disagree with this, but we need a way to prove there was a CD and prove who was the person who CDed if we're going to ban them from our club.
03 and later: Player discretion, with the caveat that one shouldn't try for the solo if they would not have gotten it if not for a CD (We're trying to form a group of like-minded players. Taking advantage of CDs is against what we're trying to do here.)

So, the way this typically worked was someone would post in the thread if they wanted to get a game going. People would communicate in the post. If seven players are found, then someone will make the game, and PM the link, password, and a full list of participants in the game (it's important that all seven players know who their 6 opponents are, not just the person who created the game, to prevent any unfair advantage).

What might be a good idea is for someone to also post the game link and list of participants in the forum after it gets underway (or after it's finished?). It would be useful/neat to have a place where those games are documented in case of any dispute, or simply to come back at some time in the future and see all the previous club games.

You opted to take the reigns on this, so the decision is up to you, but these are my suggestions.

@gf

I was more referring to 50cc (which was modeled after 150cc). 50cc was focused on providing a good experience to all players (in terms of no CDs), while 150cc was focused on highly skilled play.

Also, there's not one set game type for the club. Whatever type of game the players at the time want to play is fine, no matter on the map, the game type, press type, and whether or not the game is anon or not.

As Virt said, the focus of this club is to get more reliable players together to play live games of their chosing.

Can me a nub but what's a CD and NMR? I'd be interested in joining :)
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC
You're a nub.

CD stands for "Civil Disorder". It is the state a power goes into when it has NMR-ed for two consecutive turns.

NMR stands for No Moves Recieved - ie the player has failed to enter any orders for the most recently processed turn.
Octavious (2701 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC
Call me a low down and dirty CDer, but what's a nub?

NMR, I believe, stands for no moves registered/recorded. It's what happenes when you miss a phase (either by accident or design). There are players out there who will quite happily not do anything for strategic reasons. Playing dead was quite a common tactic in live games when I had the time to play them.

A CD is civil disorder, and is what happens (on this site at least) when a player misses a couple of phases. The player is essentially considered to have left the game, and what remains of his empire can be taken over by a new player if they happen to notice it, often with hilarious/ bloody annoying consequences.

I'm in!

But I disagree on drawing when a player leaves in 1901. In a lot of games people tend to draw instead of cancelling a game, because they want to gain points. This is rubbish and it ruins the accuracy of statistics.
If you want proof to ban a player, another player could make a screenshot and post it in the spreadsheet.
VirtualBob (209 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC
First -- Count me in!!

Second, I like these rule suggestions from @Skittles: "NMR Spring 01: Cancel;
CD in 01-02: Draw (some may disagree with this, but we need a way to prove there was a CD and prove who was the person who CDed if we're going to ban them from our club; CD 03 and later: Player discretion, with the caveat that one shouldn't try for the solo if they would not have gotten it if not for a CD" -- I would only point out that it is often poorer players who are already losing that CD later in games, and "taking advantage" of the CD is often just a slight accelerant over taking advantage of poor play.

Third, I think we need to be a little careful not to fill this thread up once we get started. Simple "Add me to the club" posts, initial game creation posts, game started notification with participants, and game ended, citing any NMR/CD behavior should be it. We can also advertise the PW-protected games in the live game thread, publishing the rules and inviting people to join the club by asking for the password.

Fourth, Mr. Mayonaise is missing the point by arguing against a draw in 01/02. It does not affect GR, has minimal affect on points, and is the ONLY way to identify a CD in an anon game.

And lastly, I am only available intermittently for live games, but I LOVE the idea of being able to find reliable ones when I do have time. It is even more important when I so rarely have the 3 hour block available to commit.
VirtualBob (209 D)
13 Dec 13 UTC
By the way, I am ready to start a live game now. I did not put a PW on it, but I will offer it here first: gameID=131316 GB, Anon, WTA, 50.

Alright. Not enough people have expressed interest. Id like to give the password protected live games a shot though, so will post them in the live game thread when Im on and maintain a list. Simply link to this thread to explain, or copy paste the following text in the live game thread when posting your game:

NMR in spring 01, or CD prior to spring 03 means mandatory draw, and ban for CD player. CD after 03 at discretion, but dont go for a solo that would have otherwise been clearly prevented. If you CD, the password will not be given to you for future games. Ban list is maintained here: http://bit.ly/1j1SHDR.

Money Philosophy
Liberals: Always focused on how to get other people's money, how to take money away from "rich" to give to others that have not earned it, but are somehow "owed" it (because they were born).

Conservatives: Focused on how to grow personal wealth, improve one's self and be financially self-reliant so as to not burden others.
