What the Heck...
...was I thinking about. Going through my writings, trying to catalog what I have complete, incomplete, what needs editing (all of it...), etc, and I came across a document with just these two paragraphs (see next post). Probably was drunk when I wrote this one (not proud, just saying). Thoughts?

Newbie question
Is it considered bad form to take advantage of the situation when a player appears to have left a game? More specifically is it bad form to resubmit orders just prior to a turn ending when it that player won't be submitting orders? Just wondering about the etiquette of that scenario on this site. Thanks in advance!

Everybody start taking good care of your teeth as soon as you can. I started late, which is better than never, but now all the fillings I got when I was a teenager are wearing out, so I’m reliving all of those experiences at a fast tempo.

Money Philosophy
Liberals: Always focused on how to get other people's money, how to take money away from "rich" to give to others that have not earned it, but are somehow "owed" it (because they were born).

Conservatives: Focused on how to grow personal wealth, improve one's self and be financially self-reliant so as to not burden others.

Meta Gaming
If someone makes a promise to help a player in a future game for help in a current game, is that metagaming? Seems like an easy yes. What is the penalty for metagaming? Seems like a ban is the answer.

@skittles, I'm not saying that you can't factor in past experience, not at all. It's when you decide that you are going to base your actions in one game completely on past games. If for example I play a few public games with you and we end up allied in most of them and then start another game I might be more inclined to consider you as an ally. But I'm not going to rule out stabbing you in the back the second I think it will help me out, be that spring 01 or fall 35. When it becomes a problem is if either of us became unwilling to play to our own advantage because of our relationship with the other player. Past experience is part of public games, but everyone needs to always go into a game with the intent to win, and to consider every chance to do so, including someone you have allied with before. If you can't do that then you should avoid playing with them.

"Clearly, I'm using my knowledge and past experiences with a player outside of my current game to influence my decisions in my current one. This is metagaming. "

That's fine because it's limited to that game. Sure you did work well together before, but you're just using public knowledge there. Anyone else in the game can say...hey...these two worked really well together last time. I wonder if that will happen again. Also either of you can and probably will use that to set a trap for the other player. What wouldn't be acceptable is if that conversation took place before the game started. What you are describing is borderline, which is why it's case by case. I won't give a 100% you can/can't do this, but generally if you're willing to consider attacking anyone if it's too your benefit then you are fine. If you're really not sure about a really grey situation then email us and ask. Though if you care enough to ask I doubt you're engaging in the type on unfair play we're trying to prevent.

@jmo - I'm saying that if I make you an offer in-game to cooperate with you in another game, I am not making an offer to cheat. As such, my offer is clearly invalid, and should be dismissed out of hand and rejected on the face of it, because I'm sure as hell not going to make an open offer to cheat in an easily documented manner. Thus, it is clear that my offer is a ruse (probably leading to your stab, at that...). Since it is illegal for me to make an offer to cheat, it is not a valid offer, and therefore is not breaking the rules...especially since it will not carry any weight outside the game, and therefore I can not follow through with my offer.

It's kind of like me saying "Give me your watch, and then I'll go rob that bank and pay you $1,000 later." Clearly this is a fraudulant offer. If you give me your watch and I walk away, I suggest you go buy a new watch with your own money, because you won't be getting any from me.

Eh, not quite Krellin, like joking to TSA that you have a bomb, might not be serious, but it's still not allowed and might get you in trouble. Since no one has any way of knowing who might be serious Kestas wrote the rule to ask that no one make those kind of offers. Makes it easier on everyone. If it impacted your ability to negotiate at all we'd reconsider but there are endless ways to convince someone to do something.

@y2k - On a serous note, though - yes, my offer to cheat is clearly false because I'm not allowed to cheat, and won't cheat....so if I make you an offer to cheat while hugging you, I hope you have on thick back armor.

Thank you for clarifying, Sir. And yes, I feel very much the same. It wouldn't really bother me if two of my opponents ended up allying two or maybe even three games in a row. It's only problematic if they ally every single game. Fortunately I don't seem to have that problem.
