Yeah except now the game will either be drawn or force-cancelled. So that was good. That's a real win for Semck.
semck83 (229 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
Are we allowed to discuss ongoing games in the forum? I would have been here hours ago....
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
And how will it be drawn or forced cancelled if semck doesn't agree to it? The mods won't do it for you. I'll put good money on them not interfering in the game.
semck83 (229 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
So I've been saying, Draug, but abge insists they will.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
12 Mar 12 UTC
@Draug

Why wouldn't they? They interfere when people use press in gunboat.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
Well, there is no official rule about this variant, unlike gunboat which has clear rules stated in the rules section and is a supported variant. But if you or another mod chose to act, then I suppose you would. However, if I were semck, I would raise a stink with the mods and ask for an internal investigation if that happened.

But then you know how I like to raise stinks...
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@semck - if abge does it (he is a mod) call for an internal investigation. Seriously. Make a *huge* ass stink. Embarrass the fuck out of the mods for interferring in a "gentlemen's agreement". I think you were wrong to break it, but I don't think you broke a website rule and they should not interfere.
semck83 (229 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
Certainly I would raise a stink if a cancel were forced. Of course, I've already offered multiple times to VOTE cancel if everybody else does.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
12 Mar 12 UTC
I would like to point out that every time Draug has demanded an internal investigation against me, it has resulted in him apologizing to me and deciding to leave the site : )
semck83 (229 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
lol. Well, I wouldn't demand any internal investigations. I would just gripe on the forum. I don't see how it will come to that anyway, given the current status in the public press.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
Andf if abge or ora do it, they are breaking the mod rule of intervening in a game in which they are participating. I will back you rright to break the agreement, even though it was downright underhanded, as you have that right. This is a game about winning and as long as you don't break a site rule (hacking passwords, multi/metagaming, etc.) they have no business intervening at all.
semck83 (229 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
Agreed, Draug.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@abge - Admit it. You may try to get fortknox or kestas to intervene, but you don't dare do it yourself. You *know* it would get in in trouble six ways from Sunda with the rest of the mods.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
12 Mar 12 UTC
I have no plans on intervening myself. I really don't care about getting in trouble; I just don't think it's the right thing to do.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
I'm not a very good mod, i'd probably intervene if i thought it was the right thing to do... but i'd rather not cancel NOR draw this game... only under protest...

@abge: how does your 'plan' work if you don't 'intervene'?
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@abge - Glad to hear it. You get much more respect from me now.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
12 Mar 12 UTC
If everyone agreed, I would have asked another mod to do it.
semck83 (229 D(B))
12 Mar 12 UTC
Nobody's DISagreed, have they abge?
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
But if everyone agrees, then you don't need a mod... And if one person is the hold out, is that not their right?

Just playing Devil's Advocate here...
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@semck - Don't let the bastards convince you to give up. You should have built your three units and prepared for war! hehehe
Sargmacher (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
Semck83 gave his word to play the game according to the rules of the pacifist variant organised in the forum advertising the game. If players had the ability to edit the in-game mechanism to reflect such variances, Semck83 would not have had the ability to move his units. Players do not have the ability to edit the in-game mechanism so the game's variant rules were based on honour and respecting what was agreed upon outside of the game.

So, hiding behind the notion that because it is a Diplomacy game the trivial issue of honour is irrelevant, for example, is a flawed one. Ditto the argument someone could make for there not being rules on this variant in the site rulebook - of course there won't be, it's a new variant that someone wanted to try out. Semck83 agreed to follow the rules of the new variant outside of the game, in this forum thread.

That he broke that, in my opinion, marks him out not only as an utterly dishonourable person but also as, what President Obama would term, a 'jackass', for ruining someone's best efforts to create a new and fun variant.

He hasn't broken a site rule so no intervention should be made against him - that's obvious. The issue is sportsmanship, honour, regard for fellow players, and respect of agreements made in the forum (which is not a part of any Diplomacy game) - this action shows that Semck83 lacks all of these qualities.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@Sarg - I agree. That's why I stated that I wouldn't have done what he did. I just believe it was within his rights to do so. And once done, he should have used the advantage he gained to crush the resitance. Of course, he claims he thought it was a joke, but that should have been easily dtermined after Spring 01 when no body else had moved, only him. So how much of that is truth and how much of that is deception to cover his tracks... Well, only semck knows.

Nonetheless, we probably shouldn't be discussing this game in the forum anyhow. So we are in agreement that semck is without honor with his two turns actions, but within his rights and the mods shouldn't intervene.

'Don't let the bastards convince you to give up. You should have built your three units and prepared for war! hehehe '

which i'm sure would have been a war he would lose!

But we're pacifists...
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
And I'll jpoin game three. Soudns fun. If you want a real challenge, make it 12 hours phases so you have to be dedicated to submitting your all holds. I'd also love a cold war variant where you could take open SCs and build up, but never an SC owned by someone else. With that would be a rule of "never ever can you support move your unit" so two people trying to take the same SC would boubnce and have to negotiate who got it.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
I'd also be interested to participate in a future game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
12 Mar 12 UTC
@Ora - well that would depend on how the others in the game approached his aggression. Do they allow his neighbors to attack him? Do they restrict the nightbors from being allowed ot build? Or allow them to so long as their builds are agreed upon by the "international community".
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Draug, we tried a second game with six hour phases that did not make. I think Nike Flash is making a third game tonight. I am hoping for the six hour phase length, but will happily accept another 48 hour game or a 12 hour compromise. I fully intend to play a game to 2001. By then, we will have developed a hugely successful space program and perfected opera. The in-game year 2001 will mark a glorious endeavor by our peoples to blend the two.

@Sarg, I do not think semck is all those things you said. I certainly intend to play with him again in the future, in any variant except pacifist. I actually enjoyed the full press game we played together and for this reason especially do not think him so callous as you say. However, I do agree that it is asinine of him to maintain his position about the "gentleman's agreement" was not binding.

@Nike, as a note, please make the game three public press only. This will allow the community the full enjoyment of the game as well as the players.

And by the sounds of it, we have enough interest to genuinely make two concurrent games of the pacifist variant.

What is natural?
There have been some arguments and discussions in the forum about what is and what is not natural, particularly in the case of filial cannibalism instincts in human beings and animals. Can we find a consensus on what 'natural' constitutes or can we not escape the fact that 'natural' is in part a socially-constructed concept?

Is, for example, homosexuality any less natural than masturbation?

Freedom of speech on a private server
I realise this has probably been discussed before, probably a dozen times, but as it has been an issue brought up in a number of threads recently, I thought I'd create one where people could discuss and put their thoughts on the issue into a centered discussion. Are there limitations to freedom of speech on a private server? I certainly enjoy the extent to which we have freedom of speech on this private server. What does everyone else think?
