Question: Is the "Republic vs. Democracy" thing just an American thing?
I've heard Americans talk about how "America is a republic not a democracy". Using the standard definitions of those words it doesn't make any sense, however if you use the ridiculous definitions those people come up with than it is true. Does anyone outside of the US use this ridiculous dichotomy or is it just Americans?

@ND, given that the majority of the polls say Hillary is ahead, should she also go state by state looking for voter fraud/suppression if she loses?

If 2008 was such a landslide, isn't that more evidence of fraud??

Democrats and media outraged that Trump thinks elections can be rigged and may not accept results....
......Democrats and media still outraged that Al Gore won the election and think election was rigged and still refuse to accept the results.

What a bunch of idiots.

The 2000 Florida election was decided by under 0.5%, which triggered an automatic recount under Florida state law. Neither candidate requested it, it was a statutory mandate. See, the crazy thing is we already have a process for dealing with elections too close to call. Eventually the Supreme Court called it for Bush, and Gore accepted the results

Valis, you're both right and wrong. Florida state law mandates a machine recount when candidates are split by a certain margin. Gore in fact *did* request a hand recount of something like 4 districts, but even that wasn't anything compared to what Trump is doing right now. He's specifically undermining our country's democratic process

@Krellin-
Not that I am defending liberals or conservatives here. I hate you both. But comparing Al Gore in 2000 to Trump 16 is flawed in a few ways:
-Gore didn't demand a recount
-Gore won the popular vote.
-Gore accepted the results after.
-Trump is claiming the system is rigged.
-Trump is likely not going to win popular vote (but we'll see)
-Trump is not accepting possible results; creating a dangerous reality in which his supporters may feel obligated to act out in protest.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
20 Oct 16 UTC
^above inwant to clarify my first point. I am referring largely to the machine count here as after that any other recounts are eh. I mean the process was already started before the requests for hand recount.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))

What really sucks here is we've created a system in which you could theoretically win the election for president with less than 50% support from the people. Not to mention the reality that primaries nominate our candidates and a vast majority of Americans do not or can not vote in the primaries.

""Once again, polls can be wrong, like in Brexit"
I've seen a number of people say this, which is bloody confusing as the Brexit polls got it largely right..."

Brexit polls tended to predict a much closer race than the results showed, but I mostly said this in reference to ND's reply to the last time I brought up polls.

If you want your state to have open primaries thats actually a decision by your governor and state legislature. Write them and complain, it isnt federally mandated

Oklahoma's GOP will never let independents vote in their primaries. And they control the state legislature as well. Dems only offer that possibility to try and win over independents.

lol Your version of history is a FAR CRY FROM REALITY my friend.

1,. Gore fought for a recount...and then kept fighting and kept fighting.
2. We do not elect President's by popular vote, so what is your point. Further, given the reporting by media of election results prior to the entire country voting, it is extremely arguable that we don't know what the *actual* popular vote would have been if we elected by popular vote. But whatever - it's an irrelevant point.
3. Gore and the Democrats and the Media STILL dont' accept that he lost
4. Gore calimed the system was rigged and the election was stolen.....not Demoncrats claim there is no such thing as a rigged election. Ironically, we have lots of video evidence this year of ACTUAL RIGGING OF ELECTIONS by Democrats....and yet Democrats still claim elections can't be rigged. Idioicy. idiociy that Democrats claim it can't happen, while claiming others do it, while doing it themselves....But to the larger point of the claim, the "it's rigged" comment is as much a commentary by Trump about the manner in which the supposedly unbiased media is actually become a part of the Clinton campaign, and intentionally mis-informing the people. I'm not arguing the legitimacy of his claim, I'm simply stating that is what his assertion is. Now....given that in the first 2 debates the Liberal moderators ACTUALLY INJECTED THEMSELVES INTO THE DEBATE as a participant, and not a moderator, it's hard to say Trump isn't on to something. But I'm sure, though you claim to be unbiased, you will no doubt jump to the defense of the media, blah blah blah as every (liberal) supposedly unbiased person does....I'll wait for it...
5. Trump has not "not accepted the results" because there are no results yet to not accept, your blithering idiot. That being said, the idea of "not accepting the results" is STANDARD PRACTICE IN US POLITICS. There are such thins as "RECOUNTS" which OCCUR ALL THE TIME because candidates don't accept results until they are verified. DUHHHH.....

That the fucking iditoic Democrats and the Media are pretending that this is a new concept invented by Trump is just further fucking evidence of the MASSIVE MEDIA FRAUD being perpetrated upon a ridiculously ill-informed electorate...of which you, obviosuly, are one.

Strategically, its pretty bad for a campaign to tell your supporters its rigged. It generates voter apatgy and complacency. It hurts Trumps with undecideds.

If someone thinks their candidate isnt gonna win because its rigged they might just stay home dismayed at the system thereby making it "not rigged".

People You Know
So, when it comes to friends and family, one should only play password protected games with them. But what about people I am meeting at face to face games in clubs in my state? What about if I start getting involved in the tournament scene? How do the more experienced players on here handle it? At what point does it become inappropriate to play in public games with people you have met through the game?
