May GR Release Date?
Any news on when the ghost ratings will be released? I am sure to tumble in June's ratings, so I am looking forward to a brief celebration when May's ratings come out.

Local Elections: Does anyone really give a damn?
Ed Miliband clearly doesn't...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-27483541

With friends like Miliband, who needs enemies? But seriously, do local elections matter? And if they do how do we drum up public interest when even our politicians seem to treat them with contempt?

Have you ever had the feeling that you threw too much away?
In a metaphorical sense, mostly. So if ended too much when you decided to make a change for example. Not much to add myself, just interested.

Missing yachtsmen - please help
Hey guys. My amazing friend Vicky needs our help. Her cousin (once removed) is one of these missing yachtsmen, and there's every chance they could still be found if there's a concerted effort by the relevant authorities to search for them. On behalf of the families, who are worried sick, please join me in signing this:

"Dr. Rove"--Making Doctors Phil and Who Look Legit By Comparison!
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/dr-rove-doubles-down-hillary-203900415.html Funny...I don't recall Republicans seeming too concerned about McCain's skin cancer and swollen gland while he was running against Obama in 2008. Then again, he was a man and a Republican, not a woman and a Democrat. Sexism, partisan politics, or just one more sign Karl Rove needs to have a little lie down? Why choose when you can have all three!

So I can't remove the Gold Star I gave myself and I feel like an ass...
With that being said: We have a yet-unused badge that we can give to people and I think we should do something with it. As a community, I'd like us to pick a couple people that we think have significantly contributed to the site and ask kestas to award them a gold star. Is this something people are interested in? Let's use this thread to discuss the idea (or other ways of using the star), rather than discussion potential recipients.

When I read the title of this thread I though of that guy who got stuck in a dryer and had to get firefighters to free him... anyone know what I'm talking about?

I like the idea of giving the badge to be people who won tournaments, or have an especially high number of points (top 1% players, for instance).

I should get a gold star for being the most reliable player in the history on online diplomacy.

Abge, I think that being a valuable forum contributor should be something different than winning a tourny or contributing to the website. IMO, forums are a sideline to the main purpose of the website (for most members), so it should be something less shiny - not a medal. A happy face to show someone who is a well-like contributor is a good example, except that I don't want to see a lot of happy faces next to people's names. It's just an example.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
14 May 14 UTC
I think you're misunderstanding what I mean by contribute. Someone like TGM, if he was still around, should get it for creating the GhostRating and maintaining records of every tournament on the site for years. That's a contribution that should be rewarded.

Theodosius (232 D(S))

That would be contributing to the website, which I think should be a gold star or something similar. I'm just saying forum should be separate.
Octavious (2701 D)

If I was king I'd have the star as a player of the month award given to a normal member who wins a popular vote because of their efforts here. One could imagine people like Nigee winning it for his efforts in gunboating, for example. But whoever wins a thread dedicated to the good things fellow members are doing would make a welcome change.

Ideas for WebDip "flair" icons

Keep the bronze, silver, gold donor icons. Keep the mod checker badges. Keep the banned player red Xs.

Add the following:

1) Trophies for winners of tournaments/leagues. Mouse-over text will state the specific competition, e.g., "Gunboat 2014 Champion".

2) Gear icon for contributors to the code-base (like how VDip gives variant creators a gear icon). Maybe have bronze, silver, gold levels.

3) Gold, silver, bronze ghosts updating monthly for the top 3 GR leaders.

4) Gold, silver, bronze battleships updating monthly for the top 3 gunboat GR leaders.

5) Iron fist for the "most oppressive" moderator. This can be decided by a rolling community vote.

6) Care bear for the "friendliest" moderator as decided by rolling community voting.

7) Dunce hat for the most idiotic forum posters as decided by rolling community voting.

8) Bleeding heart for the most vocal political activists on this site. I figure being labeled by this icon would piss off both the liberals and the conservatives.

9) Ban-hammer for the moderator that had banned the most players in the preceding month.

10) Pentagram for the most vocal Christian proselytizers.

11) Cross for the most vocal atheists.

Keep on adding more flair icons as people come up with new ideas. Make sure all relevant flair is displayed next to each name. Let each displayed username slowly turn into a pile of flair icons.

The problem is that you're not always a TD, only while the tournament is ongoing, and we can't get rid of the gold star. Its a one way street.

Great suggestions, everyone! Let's keep the list updated:

1) Trophies for winners of tournaments/leagues. Mouse-over text will state the specific competition, e.g., "Gunboat 2014 Champion".

2) Gear icon for contributors to the code-base (like how VDip gives variant creators a gear icon). Maybe have bronze, silver, gold levels.

4) Gold, silver, bronze battleships updating monthly for the top 3 gunboat GR leaders.

12) Everyone gets their zodiac sign, both Chinese (e.g., goat, dragon, ox, rabbit, etc.) and "Western" (e.g., cancer, scorpio, virgo, etc.)

13) KKK hood for the most racist member.

14) Gold star for tournament directors. How about a black and white checkered flag instead? Or maybe the black and white vertical zebra stripes (like for American football refs)?

15) Icon for reliable members. Maybe a clock (in the style of the Swiss railroad clocks)?
yebellz (729 D(G))
15 May 14 UTC
16) Icons for being a member for longer than 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, etc. Maybe an hour glass with a number over it.

17) Icons for completing 100 games, 200 games, 500 games, 1000 games, etc.

18) Laurel wreath surrounding number of solo victories.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 May 14 UTC
Anything with numbers becomes a challenge even greater than just an icon. I think the idea is just to find a use for this icon as it already exists.

50%+ of People >35 Years Old Know About Holocaust (Why the Jews Need Israel)
http://news.yahoo.com/holocaust-anti-semitism-global-study-154731933.html That is honestly a bit surprising to me...if for no other reason than the fact that WWII is so "popular" in different kinds of media that you'd think that number would be higher. And this is yet another reason, as atheistic as I am, I'll always maintain the Jews need Israel--those are dangerous numbers, and it's good to know the Jews have a state and army with which to defend themselves.
