I applaud this...I think it's a great decision...Obama to give a speech on this shortly around 10:15 Pacific Time. Thoughts on the decision itself and the impact on the 2012 race>

They Improve Their Appetite When They Exercise (Just As Long As No Skinny People Snicker)
http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/gym-bans-skinny-people-173000110.html
Banning skinny people from a gym...because it "brings down morale"...
Isn't that sort of like getting rid of all the smart kids in class because it makes the schmucks who think "The Day After Tomorrow" is scientifically accurate feel badly when they fail? WHEN did the West develop this "fear of failure" self-esteem issue?

Most businesses have some kind of exclusion policy implied by their type of business, it's just not stated as such. Delis and steakhouses exclude vegetarians. Bars exclude those under 21 and those who do not drink. Expensive restaurants exclude those without money. Most businesses do not, in fact, serve every man, woman, and child, and are usually better off for it. I think it's a shrewd business decision that is focused on improving facility access for those who need it most.

I repeat. I applaud this gym. They are within their rights and are serving their clientele well and Obi can go fuck himself for comparing his academic failings which only show because he has no confidence to people who have a clearly perceivable disadvantage.

"So I don't see being skinny/otherwise as a form of discrimination on par with being white/black/straight/gay/whatever...

Sure, in school you CAN get picked on for being fat, and that's discrimination, but it's still not, for the most part, on par with, shall we say, the "spirit" of discrimination..."

Of course you don't, when in fact it's worse. If a doctor treats you like shit for being fat, that's fine and dandy. If a doctor misdiagnoses routinely, that's fine and dandy. If a doctor treats you differently for being black or Jewish, they get sued. If you get bullied because of your race in school, it's a national headline. If you get bullied for being fat, it's ho-hum another day at the office, nobody cares, probably people like you would say they deserve it for being failures. Being picked on will make them want to be "fit/skinny" which in your view is synonymous.

And your assessment as to how much weight can be controlled is 100% wrong. Let me guess people can control their height, too, right?

I shouldn't be so surprised that Putin33's on a typical soapbox rant on fat people, but it is pretty surprising. Being made fun of for being overweight is not at all like being made fun of for being, say, black or gay since you can stop being fat. Just eat less and get some walking in. And you're healthier when you're not fat. This gym is great because it provides an area where fat people can workout without being self-conscious. There's no need to deconstruct this at all.
Putin33 (111 D)

"*YOU* are the one who unilaterally declared that *all* fat people were disenfranchised and, worse yet, that *all* thin people were worshiped by society. It simply isn't the case."

I provided actual generalizable evidence, you provided nothing but your own supposed story which somehow nullifies the broader societal trend in a single stroke. You're hoping this kind of laziness will be sufficient to make the argument go away.

I should be clearer. You can stop being DANGEROUSLY fat. For some people love handles, etc will never go away, but everyone can get rid of that awful second belly that you get between your navel and crotch.

"Being made fun of for being overweight is not at all like being made fun of for being, say, black or gay since you can stop being fat. Just eat less and get some walking in."

More ignorance. You cannot stop being fat, in the vast vast majority of cases, anymore than a tall person can stop being tall. People come in different sizes. If you want a license to hate, don't expect me everybody else to give it to you. It shouldn't surprise anybody that a frat boy buys into bad body image bs and wants an excuse to bully people.

"I disagree with the last part for a simple reason:

You can't help being Jewish/black/white/straight/gay...those sort of things..."

That's not the issue. The underlying hate is the same, whether its target can influence its condition or not. Saying that fat-hate is different from race-hate because the fat are fat because of their failure is victim blaming as well. I'm sure you remember those discussions we had here about the disgusting practice of blaming women for getting raped. Blame haters, not hated.

"Fact: a business has a right to recuse service to anyone for any reason. "

In the Czech Republic, you definitely cannot evict Romani out of your bar for being Romani (well, you can and sadly not many will care but you cannot do that legally). I'm sure it works similarly in the USA.
Invictus (240 D)

How is it hate? Being overweight is bad for you. Not everyone needs to be thin as a rail, but if you're a guy with moobs you need to do something. I make sure things don't get out of hand since I was getting kinda chunky from about 12 to 15. I'm still not really muscular at all but I'm in what the doctor says is OK and that's enough. And I graduated this spring so you can lay off the frat boy nonsense, geed.

"Show me where I misunderstood the claim that skinny people are the smart kids in class."

It wasn't about skinny, it was about EFFORT--

Those who have put in the EFFORT to work out and try and eat correctly and thus put at least some care towards their bodily appearance and health and thus, yes, are more toned as a result I liken to the kid who studies hard and is thus the smart kid in class...

Those who eschew taking care of their bodies entirely (ie, those very chain-smoking junk food aficionados who you mentioned earlier) and put no EFFORT into working out or eating well or taking care of themselves physically or medically, THOSE people I liken to the lazy lumpen sods in the back of class who may as well be clods of dirt for all they know and all they try.

Notice something, though--

I DID NOT mention skinny or fat there.

If you prefer a rounder body shape, and still work to make sure you're not in danger of diabetes or heart disease or eating more than a Rwandan child will get in two months in two days...

Guess what? YOU'RE IN SHAPE! You're FINE! No problems there!

You're putting in EFFORT in regards to your body, and you're not being insecure about it...well done!

You can be fit without being built like Tom Brady...

Hell, Babe Ruth was probably the most famous "fat" sports star this side of the NFL...

And he's one of our most beloved heroes in American sports, AND, while I doubt the Babe could've done a sit-up if his life depended on it, for all the beer he loved to swig and all the hot dogs he loved to eat, he STILL had to take care to be sure his upper body strength was there, and had to work at that, so even the Babe to an extent looked after his bodies, and guess what?

Playing baseball, he got something most Americans no longer get:

EXERCISE!

The Babe burned some of those calories going outside to play ball, no matter what anyone said about how undeniably fat he was!

And that's my point--

The smart kid and fit kid...they can be smart and fit in different ways and aspects--

I'm smart (to an extent, anyway) in English, and yet awful in math...

abgemacht's great with math; I don't know how he is with English, probably good there too, but in any case, there are different fields to be "smart" in, and as long as you're trying to improve and gain some sort of knowledge and pass classes, no matter how poor you are at them, you're fine.

Same with physical fitness--

Doesn't matter if you're built like Rocky or the Babe--as long as you're eating healthy foods to some extent, or exercising to some extent, or playing sports, or at least CARING about how you look, AS LONG AS YOU'RE AT LEAST TRYING, you're fine.

Those who DON'T are the dumb clods in the back of class and the unfit people.

And I'm sorry, as much as you hate it--

ACCORDING TO *ABILITY,* NOT NEED.

I don't get to tell those with mathematical ability to leave because it will make me, flailing me feel better about my failures...

LIKEWISE,

While it's a private establishment and they can do it if they like, it does not garner my sympathy for the unfit to shriek to the fit "GO AWAY, YOU'RE BEING FIT IS LOWERING OUR MORALE AND MAKING US FEEL BAD FOR EATING THOSE 5 BIG MACS YESTERDAY" (or, if we're going to be fair and show skinny folks can be unfit too) "GO AWAY, YOU'RE BEING A NORMAL BODY WEIGHT IS MAKING ME FEEL BADLY FOR EATING AT ALL TODAY!"

Just to show anorexics are no more healthy than the overweight--

And NEITHER get my support or sympathy over those who've actually put the thought and time into actually caring for their bodies.

"How is it hate? Being overweight is bad for you."

THANK YOU! +1!

I'm sorry, but if you put yourself in jeopardy of heart disease, diabetes, and all that comes with being overweight...you get no sympathy!

I'm sorry, but that's what the word means "OVERweight!"

Obesity is recognized more and more as a serious medical condition...some go so far as to call it a disease.

Now, again, that's not to say everyone should look like a supermodel...

If you're of a rounder shape and happy with that and you take care of your body--good for you! No mature person is going to chastise you for that.

I'm sorry, Putin:

but if you see this and make it a regular meal...no. I'm sorry.

It is then, squarely, *your fault* that you're unfit, when the package itself screams to any rational person "DO NOT EAT ME, AND IF YOU DO, DUDE, EAT SOME *REAL* FOOD AFTERWARD...AND GO EASY!"

Well, if you think they are causing themselves harm by being overweight and want to help them, being all "man the harpoons" won't encourage much positive change. And that is a typical manifestation of fat-hate. How much different is giving no sympathy to "those who fail to be in shape" from giving no sympathy to "those who fail to make ends meet"? And when those two categories overlap (which is often), they should receive double extra no sympathy?

Turning from putin's desperate comedy back to obiwan's initial point -- I think the difference that makes your analogy fail, obiwan, is that math class is (usually) mandatory while going to the gym is optional, for one's own benefit. I would have absolutely no problem with -- in fact, I would encourage -- a voluntary math club that was closed to people who had done well in math, where people who had math anxiety could come together and work through problems together to try to get over their fear of math. (Of course, you'd need someone there, arguably, to make sure they at least were heading in the right direction, but that's an artifact of the math context, and isn't applicable to gyms, mostly).

The incentives in the food market are incredibly perverse and fucked up. Cheap, overprocessed food is significantly cheaper than healthy, quality food. Unfortunately, it takes a significant amount of effort and money to ensure you buy, prepare, and eat quality food, which is something not everybody can do. Regardless of whether an overweight person faces genetic hurdles or simple laziness, eating well isn't as easy as it's made out to be, especially if an individual comes from a family where unhealthy eating is the norm and they don't know any other way.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Word, also some people are raised in cultures where fatness is seen as desirable (read: a lot of cultures)
Zmaj (215 D(B))

Yes, because people in most cultures are malnourished. But I think we're discussing the US here.

There Can Be Only One--Which Actors/Films Pull Off The Character Best?
The many Bonds...the many Doctors...the different Darens...different Marx Bros. and Stooges...the many Hamlets and Holmes...the originals and remakes and re-imaginings...

Give a role with multiple actors, or a story with multiple adaptations, and say which one you take over the other(s) and why...which are the DEFINITIVE portrayals and films, and which are...not? ;)

Serious question. When you're debating, discussing, or arguing with people and they simply won't accept other points of view, even after reams of evidence, how can you respond? Is it best just to walk away or should we strive to educate?

How would you deal with someone utterly convinced that the Earth was flat, for example?
