Political article, must read

A plea for sanity. I can think of a few people here who could benefit from reading this. I sure know I will.

Diplomacy on the web
I have been at WebDip for a few months now, and I think I've got a pretty good idea of the flavor of the site and its regular users. How does it compare to the rest of internet diplomacy?

Daily Bible Reading--John 1
This thread isn't meant to provoke argument, but if it does, that's ok. It's just a place to come for a one-chapter dose of the Bible. Today's reading is the first chapter of John's story of the good news as he personally experienced it, translated into modern English.

Did something change with how muting works?
Used to be, you could briefly see (and hit ESC to fully read) muted posts/people. Now, I can hit ESC before the javascript executes, but I still don't see posts form people I muted. Did the code shift to muting server side? If so, cool, but also "bummer" as I'll have to unmute people to see their bullshit (and them me if they have me muted).

Please stop being hypocritical
We ask Mujus to create a single thread for his quotes and he has done that. Please be considerate and do the same. If he wants to discuss the bible every day and there are people who want to do the same, please let them. Stop making a mockery out of their freedom of speech.

Iberian bug?
Is there a bug in this game? the A1901 opening F MAO - SPAIN - SC with A SPAIN - POR has failed to work in 2 successive games.

There is a rule against swapping places I think, but that is not what these units are doing here.

Use a 1/32 diamond bit at low speed then use gel CAO which can fill the gap and activator to reinsert the plug.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
Wait, are your talking about drilling one big whole under the bottle?

That could work, although there's still the problem of all that weight now supported by glue instead of glass. These bottles are *heavy* once you fill them up with rocks.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
I think I'm misunderstanding you Draug. 1/32 is very small. What will I use that hole for?
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
Is there anything else that could be used as a plug?
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Yes, one big whole, but the CA or hot glue can take it as long as you keep the bottle upside down while the glue fully cures.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
I suppose I could get one of those rubber plugs that you jam up into the whole. That may work.

But, again, this is only an issue if I use rocks that are too big to fit down the neck of the bottle. And, if they *are* that big, they will be very sparse inside and the chord will clearly show, which may work for some styles, but not for most, I don't think.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
God Damn, why do I keep saying "whole"?
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Also, a couple of tongue depressor pieces in a + shape can be slipped up and propped on the edges of the bottom and the plug glued to them as well to provide extra support that won't be seen.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Use the big and the small grit together for a different contrasting look. Dark stones and white sand for instance.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
Another idea: I could buy those big rocks, smash them, and re polish them.

That might work out well.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
That would look pretty epic depending on the bottle.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
Yes, I have considered sand; I think that would be very cool.

It would require me to calk the hole that the chord comes out of. Not a big deal, though.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

"Dark stones and white sand for instance."

For this bottle, perhaps? : )

Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
That would be cool. Thought about amber? Scotch bottles would.look cool.with amber although it would be costly.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
I was going to say amber can be expensive. Though this would look interesting as well: http://rocktumbler.com/gemstones/gold-tigers-eye.shtml

I love tiger eye. also blue star sapphire especially as you're giving it a light source to create the refraction.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
I think Onyx with white sand would look great in the Kraken bottle. If I charged money for them, I'd feel obligated to give you two a cut : )

It will have to wait til the end of the summer, I think, though. I'm currently starting one for my cousin's wedding. And, I'm working on a 1.75L bottle of Jameson for my Uncle. Drinking the bottle is a whole project itself : )
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

That tiger eye is nice as well. Can't think of a good bottle for it off the top of my head.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Blue agave bottle filled with blue star sapphires.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
Hrm for the tiger's eye maybe a tequila bottle or a midori bottle. Then again I just love just about everything about Midri.. the taste, the color and the bottle.

I couldn't take a cut, just cause I may find inspiration to make something from one of these discussions one day. I've thought about making a patchwork blanket of the diplomacy map for the computer room but it's a daunting idea.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
@Draug That would be a lil pricey. Sapphires are pretty expensive.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 May 12 UTC
That's good, because I give them away for free : )

If I wanted to be super serious, I could invest $100 in a tumbler and just go out and collect my own rocks. That would be fun.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
My hubby has an uncle who does that. I guess it's a pretty rewarding hobby.

01 May 12 UTC
Well, it's been a great chat, but it's now 2hrs later than I had planned on going to bed.

My irl friends should thank you; I've been driving them nuts with all my lamp talk, now I think it will be out of my system for a bit (although I am seriously eyeing that tumbler).
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Blue star sapphires aren't transparent blue but are solid and not nearly as expensive as regular sapphires. A bit more than tiger eye, but less than say garner.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
01 May 12 UTC
Hrm true. The other option is the look for lab created sapphires as well. Can't really tell the difference and tend to be a bunch cheaper.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 May 12 UTC
Do the tumbler. You can buy the rough stones at the gem and mineral.shows real.cheap and polish them up nice.

Jack White's album is another gem. He really has the portfolio to be in the discussion for greatest guitarists of all time.
Definitely one of the only arena acts that I'd consider shelling out for.

Daily Secular Reading
Well, last time we did a poem by a tragic, mad, male genius, Mr. Poe...how about a tragic, mad, female genius, Emily Dickinson? (We'll do someone from the British Isles tomorrow, so don't worry, this thread isn't going to be a sad example of American Exceptionalism and shut out the rest of the English-speaking world.) So! A very short poem by Dickinson (and how prudent this one is, given these "Daily Bible Readings") and more talk of her inside...
