Springing Forward
Daylight Savings Time starts tonight for most of us in the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean island nations. This isn't the same date as for most other participating countries; consequently, this meant we all had to change our time zones manually when I last was on this site a few years ago.

Remember to Spring Forward if it applies to you, and remember to double-check your clocks on the webDiplomacy website after you do it.

My apologies to the players of "two?" gameID=82846
I'm writing to apologize to the players of game "two?" (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=82846) for abandoning the game. An emergency came up and I had to leave. I understand me leaving threw the game off balance for everyone and for that I am sorry. I hope I get a chance to play you guys again in the future.

Sincerely,

United Auto Workers bailed out by Obama
Why did Americans who don't work at General Motors, about 99.9% of the population, waste hundreds of billions bailing out GM? Obama's dependence on union money of course. Our reward
Production of the Chevy Volt halted and 1,300 jobs lost.

Random Person to Post Wins
We all know that the concept of "Last Person to Post Wins" is deeply flawed – it encourages excessive posting which is similar to bidding wars; only except of money, one constantly invests his free time to stay on top which favours the trolls the most, since they have no life and therefore plenty of free time. Random Person to Post Wins alleviates the situation of those who wish to win but can't bother trying. Enjoy.

England just left a surprisingly solid position in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=81140

It's Autumn retreats, so England will have two builds and a total of six units before there's any new action.

Government "aid" to the poor, a success or disaster?
Socialists, statists, liberals and the like consistently, constantly, and incessantly claim that government administered aid is the "only" solution for poverty and uplifting the poor. Where is the real evidence of this success? The youth riots in Britain provide evidence of its failure.

Not that any of you live close enough to play IRL, but does anyone still play competitively? I recently got sucked back in and have been play testing decks on the MWS software all night. If anyone wants to join in, I can post a link to my installation. Just download and skype me.

@Tru Ninja ... I hear yah !... 'Combo Decks' ... some are great fun.
Blue Total Draw type... & Like Ashnod's Altar, Enduring Renewal, Ornithoper, Disisntegrate or Initiates of Ebon Hand and a Drain Life. ...
A Land's Edge is funny too, with a terrain cycling thingy... Dump cards.
Ivory Tower, put Mana, * Lich *, and Stream of Life ... & then play...

Used to play years ago. Last year me and my brother we're asked by some friends if we wanted to play some booster drafts. We've really enjoyed the Innistrad games, that set is really well designed for the draft style mtg game.
Surely we will try some drafts with the newest Dark Ascension set soon.
Anyone played a DA draft yet?

I'm lucky to live next to the StarCityGames HQ (Blacksburg to Roanoke is ~30 min) so I'll be hitting up their IQ next Saturday. I've been thinking about using a version of Wolf Run that doesn't rely on top decking whipflares, but since I really don't know what's going to be played next week, I might run the version of Finkel's Delver Spirits that he should have been using (he even said it himself). I still can't believe he didn't block against Kibler. He would have won the DKA Pro Tour if he had.

This IQ is pretty crucial as there are only three more I can potentially make before the Baltimore Invitational. There isn't another Grand Prix for me for almost the whole year.

Though I would love to play my version of Solar Flare or even B/U zombies, Delver Spirits has answers for a lot more decks than either of those.

I could really use more online playtesting whilst I'm on the road for work. If anyone is willing to download Magic Workstation, I can walk you through updating it over chat or skype/vent. Takes maybe 30 minutes to get there and any deck (or any net deck) is welcome as long as its standard. Shoot me a PM.

Ive done the infinite combos with ornithopters, ashnods altars and enduring renewals before. It took a lot more to get that deck going. It was sortal like my aluren/recycle/elves/dark sphere/hurricane combo. Fun but slower.

Ya i could buy my cards back but the cost has increased 10-fold or more on my 20k card collection. Too much to try at this point. Now i play with my buddies decks. Not as fun using newer cards, but enjoyable.

I do play Dual of the Planeswalkers (dos game) still on my flash drive.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I hit an infinite combo with a pre-errata Time Vault, Animate Artifact, and Instill Energy. It was kind of funny to have that and, say, a Llanowar Elf eventually destroy someone.

Cast non-stop Time Walks, take a turn, lay a Tormod's Crypt & trash your grave, + make you draw all your deck: next trun a Mind Twist a bit larger -> Ancestral Recall = Bye. ;)
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

BTW abge that site I linked to only charges $10 for their crappy "Magic Lite" Duel of the planeswalker.

The demo version of the regular game is free and pretty fun, though you will have to buy cards if you ever want to customize your decks. I just re downloaded it and have been playing a bit, it's still a good time.
Geofram (130 D(B))

You could always print your own cards. It's called proxy-ing. Some just use slips of paper in a sleeve in front of another card. Others write on basic lands. But with a bit of research, image and printing know how, and some dedication, you can print proxies that stand up to a tournament judge's eye.

I'm not condoning this. But for some, the money is the only reason they don't play. Though if you start selling or trading the proxies then you're a dick that'll get caught and fined nearly 300k.

Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 is $10 and relatively fun. There's no buying cards, has a multiplayer mode, and can get pretty advanced if you let it. Check out the demo.

@YJ

I mean, it's not that bad. I feel like I can just about make 2 solid decks now with the cards I have. I'm sure I can't go against any real players, but I don't know any, so that's fine. Now, my roommate and I are just trying to make our deck specifically to kill the other person, which is fun.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

abge: it stays fun until you play people with theme decks. Then it just pisses you off. I recommend entering a noncompetition clause with your roomie, where you only buy new cards at the same time.

Otherwise it just gets ridiculous.

MtG:

Find good color printer. Print cards. Glue on land cards. Smile when friends tell you that it's not fair. Tell them to go play with their private parts. Beat them with your deck.

-> Profit.

Overall, I have greatly enjoyed it. I love card games, especially bridge, but I don't have the card-counting skills to play anything more serious that casual games. I feel that isn't such a big deal with Magic.

I played about ten-twelve years ago in high school. I had a non-functional creature deck, with the most beautiful creatures appearing on the table and my friend pulling counter spells. Then I built a better one that had white enchantments in them that turned into creatures. It was not a type 2 deck, but see the procedure above for how to act when your friends tell you that that's not fair.

@ abg: it's interesting to note that you've tried all sorts of (regular) card games... is this the first 'collectible' style you've played... I believe there's like 10,000 cards now... woah. That's that many original artworks 'titled' . . . In tournaments you find the Draft 'variant'; a 60 card box & 2-3 booster packs, unopened. Make the best of that, in a 40 card (or +) deck. Yup, with (mostly) basic lands... THere was a magazine at the start, dunno how long it lasted, fine & lengthy articles, insider's & news, a full-page puzzle, listings, etc... Somewhere in the 5-6th. year they came out with two books, thick & ; lavish catalogues of all that they printed. A few novels... etc. You are probably not aware of the scope of this fine game ;) We were hundreds on a weekly meet; trades, buy/sell, play, in Montreal. ...
... The 'hardest'/'Most Fun' is the Type-1, Highlander ( one of each max. )... a deck with style, focus, it's theme, ...

NMR/CD First Year Automatic Cancelling
Has anyone considered adding this option? It makes sense that if someone misses both of their first year's moves, that the game is imbalanced. Would allowing a setting to cancel the game if someone goes CD by the end of the first year be feasible?

Government should regulate WebDip's Website
Following the logic that braindead socialists post on this site all the time about how government knows best then lets put their insane ideas to the test.
If government can run my health care better than I can then surely government could run Webdip better with one hand behind its back than the mods do.

A tax policy scenario.
This thread assumes that the economy is not a zero-sum system, but instead assumes that the economy is a dynamic system capable of real growth.
Thus any assumed increase in wealth results from the output of productive activity, and does not diminish the wealth of anyone else at all.

Why can't Unions survive on their own?
Mitch Daniels signed right to work legislation and union workers protested.
We've had unions in this nation for well over a century.
We've seen the "workers" of the state run a government in the Soviet Union.
With all this historical evidence why can't unions survive without coercion?
