Repeat, LJ: With all due respect, there ultimately it isn't an argument to be made. DJE is running the tournament, and what is and isn't allowed to enter is his prerogative entirely.

You need two more Californians, the other team is happening, but the name of the other team is up in the air, but given LJ's last post, La Jolla High School Debating C team might be appropriate.
denis (864 D)

Well durden and uclabb have a team it's name is in question though... With mdrlct am Tolstoy you will have 4
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Oh, btw, I've discussed the naming of the London team and He wants it to be England A, because it would be the first team picked for England, and he's a bit nationalistic.

I'm happy to go along with that.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
So Team California is obiwanobiwan, baron samedi, mdrlct and Tolstoy?

And TGM, you should have a Team London, what with the huge British presence in the game... and if a little town/hs can get it's own team... just saying...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
It can't necessarily get called little high school though
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
And I'm more English than I am a Londoner, for sure.

Can you pencil in the England B team please? so far Me,Biddis,Maniac: We'll get someone else don't worry
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
Right then, so, one final check:

Team California is obiwanobiwan (I've done all the talking, so if no one objects, I'll take Captaincy...?) baron samedi, mdrlct, and Tolstoy?

Is that correct?

I'm on the sign-up site, so waiting for the go-ahead...

(And as a general note to all- can we keep a running list on this thread of teams so we know what teams and how many and who is in so far? Just a suggestion...)

I can just feel the love in the room. By the way,why doesn't the debating society for south south calif just change it's name to the LJs? Is this the place to start picking on people?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
Look further up the thread. I posted a link to such a list.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
Right, seeing those teams now...

OK, so, really guys, are we locked or what? And who wants to play what... 2 standard boards, a gunboat, and a public press... I'm up for anything but the last one...

So let me know... if nothing by 9:00pm here (midnight EST) I'll just post us...
BusDespres (182 D)

Obiwan-sure
let's go!
I don't mind playing public press, I'm fine with anything.
Actually I might prefer public press/gunboat over standard.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
OK, signing up now... Baron's taking public press thank goodness...

I'm taking spot #1 (captain) as I've typed all this, again, unless anyone really cares and will have a fit...

So, that leaves mdrlct and Tolstoy- I'll check the records and see who's better where, and assign accordingly (I'll take a standard board.)

why do we host right when school starts! love to join if next time we do it in summer
@ Ghost - Yes, it is DJ's tournament, however, at the time I posted my last entry, he hadn't weighed in on it and you and denis had done all the talking for him. I'm fine with it being his tournament and having our name at his discretion, but he had left it up in the air. Also, the personal attack about the deabte team was unwarranted for two reasons: a) None of our members are on the debate team. We are all however, on the Mock Trial team, a much better place for someone who wants to get an actual feel for argument and not see people read pre-prepared statements off index cards. b) I'm not sure where we established my argument wasn't valid, thus meriting the "c team" comment. I never got a rebuttal on that from anyone. Instead you went straight to the personal attack which usually is indicative of someone not having anything intelligent to say in response. I'm going to assume your recourse to name-calling is because you're from England and the analogy to our electoral process wasn't exactly up your alley. If, on the contrary, you would like to continue this debate using only personal attacks, I'm happy to oblige.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
This never would even have been an issue if you had just stayed with Team California.

But no matter- we'll take you on, we're better for it, and on behalf of Team California, the TRUE Team California, we look foward to teaching your team a lession about secession!

Ah... the first fighting words of the tournament... can New York vs. Boston and English vs. French vc. Germans and all other international name-calling be far behind?

(Best idea EVER!) ;)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
That LESSON about secession is right after my spelling lesson ;)

OK, that's done, diploming ON!
obiwan, I hope you bear no grudge. In light of the fact that they have rescinded my team name, I almost regret it. Almost. However, I think our small band can prove our mettle and teach the rest of the world a lesson. Also, I really hope team Germany destroys team France just for purposes of historical irony.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
lol no hard feelings...

But just because we're all brothers doesn't mean we don't shoot in a Civil War.

You seceded, you asked for it ;)

LJ:

RE the comment about the debate team (and how awful is debating in that fair country of yours, if people read of totally pre-prepared statements?), it was just a joke on account of the fact that I was bored- I had already made it quite clear that I didn't think it was to be debated.

DJE has expressed a concern about having a high school to me via PM.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
07 Jan 10 UTC
TGM, debate is a dead practice in America save for the very few who still savor the art.

Case in point- did you English see the mess of those crazy town hall meetings we had this summer over healthcare?

And Bill O'Reilley interrupting every guest he has the second they disagree to bash them for ten minutes?

And Anderson Cooper and the Punditry Squad?

THAT's what we endorse in America... apparently.

My first play I was ever in was "My Fair Lady" as an Angry Cockney Man in a couple scenes (about ten lines altogether) and the Queen's Escort at the Ball:

What was that song the lead sang right after one of my lines...

"Why Can't The English Teach Their Children How Tow Speak?"

That's America now ;)

In fact, that's in the song too, I remember it lol:

"Oh why can't the English learn to
Set a good example for people who's English is painful to their ears,
The Scotch and the Irish leave you close to tears,
There even are places, where English COMPLETELY DISAPPEARS-"

Wait for it...

"Well, in America, the haven't used it for YEARS..."

Perfect then, perfect now ;)

When is a game cancelled for cheating and when not?
I was in an anonymous game which was cancelled earlier this week after I reported fishy behaviour of two of the players. If those players had been banned and game continued I would probably have won the game (primarily because I would have been the only 'survivor' left.

Meta gaming in gunboat games
In this gunboat game, http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?g'ameID=17712 ,
Russia, Germany, and Italy are playing an alliance...

I would like to thing it was natural and not just cheating but the Autumn 1902 move of Russia in galicia supporting Italy' s Tyrolia to Vienna was the first real recognition of this cheating communication.

Units missing from map in pre-game
Hi, I'm new here and am a little confused.
In game #18940 it's in pre-game, and orders have been placed, but no units appear on the map.
In game#19581 it's in the same phase, but units do appear.
Any idea why units are missing from the first game? Thanks!

Question/Suggestion
I think there should be a SEARCH function button where one can search for a particular user.... eg: I am trying to find the Captains of the Australian World Cup teams and its impossible.
Unless they EVER post on this forum again, i won't spend days and days trawling thru the forum posts of yesteryear in order to find them...

Or is there another way to do this?

Isn’t It Funny . . . .
Isn’t it funny how some players\allies, after missing a turn or making wrong moves, and in doing so put both themselves as well as their counterpart at risk of takeover believe that the other player is still obligated to blindly support and\or work with them due to an agreed upon alliance? And if you don’t you are ‘stabbing’ them. Couldn’t those above actions be loosely be considered ‘a stab’ in and of themselves?

guilt
I think I've posted something similar about this in the past....
But, one thing I really dislike about diplomacy is the guilt that I carry throughout the game that will only get heavier and heavier as the game finishes.

Something Fishy
Please observe France and Russia's behavior in this game. Another note - Russia never sent any messages to anybody else in this game. And France was pretty tight lipped too...perhaps too busy entering in their several orders to notice they had messages?

And Somewhere the John, Bobby and Ted Kennedy cry, "Can't We Catch ONE Break?"
The Republicans win the MAS. election, and can now stop health care and play a stonewall to Obama's idea... and on the seat the Ted Kennedy sat for for nearly 50 years and dreamt of health care and all... it dies.

Thoughts on the political outfall (and the Kennedys REALLY ARE CURSED!) ;)
