I am not sure how one could set up things like that, really. You could just establish the idea that "padawan apprentice #" is a training game and that a group of, say 3 or 4, experienced players join and invite 3 or 4 noobs to join and play the game. Alliances in the game would be based on strategic pairings of 1 vet and 1 noob. As the game progresses the vet shows the noobs how to conduct diplomacy, tactics, and strategic thinking. They can be low point games.

I found this topic because it is in the forum.

Nah I don't think experts and newbies should play in the same game with that padawan apprentice. What would happen is 7 newbies would join a game and 1 expert1 would each be paired up with one newbie. They would then communicate via email or something.

That might work.
There could be a simple tutorial for new players. I don't know how easy it would be to set up, though.

I remember reading "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" when I was younger in order to learn some basic chess moves and strategies. The book would give a picture of a board with a few pieces on it on the right page. The reader would be asked to make the best move on the board and would be shown the best move and the explanation on the reverse side of the page. The complexity would increase throughout the book.

This could be done with diplomacy to help new players understand support, stand offs, convoys and other general strategies.

Speaking as a total noob, I have found a player in each of the (count 'em) 2 games I'm in right now to be really helpful. It helps if the new player takes their advice seriously. I did do some due diligence before starting, though, like read the rules and some of the basic articles on Diplomacy Archives. The folks I am allied to are a lot more experienced than me, and I wouldn't be surprised to get skewered by one of them as soon as I am no longer a useful tool (any turn now) but that's the game. I don't expect to win, or even survive right out of the gate. Hell, my first game I drew Italy...

Italy usually need more experienced players to play. Becuase its the x factor both in the Western and Eastern Triangle.

Diplofool is back... Airborne's 110 Ds are what is left after his 100+ Ds invested in 11 different games. I talied them all up and they are over 800 total Ds in those games. Figure as many as 100 Ds come from take over (probably less, not likely more) and that means 1/7 of the remaining is his investment, theoretically.

So keep flappin yer mouth Diplofool...

diplo, Dpoints, especially lower levels of them mean diddly, games played, win ratio and ghost ratings, that's what cuts the mustard.

i understand what you are all saying but personally as a new player on this i do not view myself as a noob, and have already gotten very pised at the true noobs.
sure i'm new around here but i know how to play a stategy game, and when some guy with 10 points is trying to order me around, and he's been talking trash the entire game, and is getting absolutely owned cause everyone is sick and tired of his bs. yeah that annoys me
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Mar 09 UTC
@akilies - It's just part of this particular game. If you want pure strategy without dealing with human egos and foibles, go play chess. this game is all about communication. sometimes, you even intentionally piss someone off to get them to chase you and let an ally slip silently in behind them and lay open the enemy's spleen.

aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh this is soooo stupid...in my game "IDK"(sorry im on my phone so i cant provide a link but someone else is more than welcome to) after many turns of failed attacks against england due to a number of circumstances i decided to stop my foolishness and team up with him to fight one of the weirdest alliances ive seen. But guess what...? Forget it just see for yourself and you will understand my torment.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
18 Mar 09 UTC
i like chess but i tend to just play and develope strategy as go through a game and since most of my plans depend on somewhat doing what i expect them to do i tend to not due very well
akilies (861 D)
20 Mar 09 UTC
:) weird alliance?? i thought i did pretty well coming up with it and getting both on board. then turkey went a-wall
and to Draugnar, i understand about the human ego and such, and yes i have intentionally pissed people off so an ally can sneak in, and you haven't played chess then, cause human ego is huge in chess

Missing Player
In one of my games, we are missing a player, and the game is paused. I was hoping one of the Gamemasters could unpause it, or at least put the missing player in Social Disorder so we can replace him. Thanks in advance : )

What happens to a game that does not start with enough players?
If there's only 5 or 6 players, I know Italy and some other country start as CD.

But what happens if there's like...only two players? Does the game wait for more, or does it become a east vs. west game?

There's two players in this paused game that haven't logged in for over 2 weeks. Could we force a draw somehow?

So, how are points divvied up again?
Just won a game, http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8371 , where the pot was 50 points. For winning with 18 SCs, I was awarded 18 points.

I thought you were supposed to get most of the points in the pot if you won.

Quick rules question
Does a convoy cut support for an attack on a province supporting the convoy? Example:
Russia convoys Sev to Ank, supported by Arm
Turkey orders Ank to support Smy to Arm
Does everything bounce, or does Turkey take Arm?
