University Students
So I know there's a whole range of ages on this site, but since I'm myself doing this out of a dorm room, it occurred to me that a lot of the folks here might be college students, checking this site habitually between classes after (or before) facebook.

Is anybody else here a college student? And if so, where?

Favorite Beer by Nationality
I'm always looking for new beers to try. I figured with the international group we have here, I'll learn some good ones that maybe I've seen, but haven't tried out of ignorance my choices follow ...

I can't believe the two beers from England listed so far are the mass produced rats piddle that are John Smiths and Boddingtons!

There are some lovely nutty ales and bitters around, and if you live in the UK, just drop into a pub and sample something 'on tap'.

Some of the more widely available ales include Greene King 'IPA', Abbott Ale, Spitfire etc.

But best of all are the microbreweries. Around the country, there are still a good number of local brews that provide beer to only a few nearby towns/pubs. The great joy of a pub crawl, is you get to sample all of them whilst walking it off in the glorious English countryside.

My personal favourite is Timothy Taylors' 'Landlord:
http://www.timothy-taylor.co.uk/llordfr.htm

Four times a national champion, and four times the CAMRA (campaign for real ale) 'Beer of the Year'. I might just head off to have one with my Sunday lunch...

Magners, Gaymers and Bulmers ... Got it.

Thanks for the recomendations - maybe I'll go out today and get a few that people mentioned. Don't be surprised if I post some nonsensical threads later on tonight - I might be drunk! ;-)

Heineken is no better than the watery massed produced american beers IMO.

I think Stella is a decent beer - but for christ sake, WHY do they insist on puting it in a wine glass? That's why it has such a femanine reputation, I think
Chrispminis (916 D)

Stella is definitely a decent beer.

Red Stripe! Hooray Beer!

love that jamaican lager.
good with a shot of rum and some reggae
trim101 (363 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
red stripe is a good beer, seriously stella has such a bad image they stopped using the word stella in their adverts as it has such a negative image, and its not even a beer
Chrispminis (916 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Well I'm sorry the English can't get over the image and enjoy the beer, but the rest of us seem to think it's a good beer. =)
trim101 (363 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
well compared to the american piss water yes, but in countries with decent beer and lager its nothing at all, just a chav drink
Chrispminis (916 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Well I'm glad to say that as a Canadian I don't drink American piss water but I still think you're stuck on the image. Try taking a double blind taste test. =)

People are always surprised to find out which beers they honestly prefer.
trim101 (363 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
its a lager beer is completely different!i know the taste of stella and i know what it does to people the image may be different in other countries, but considering its a belgium beer and its not even big in belgium should tell you something

Yes. It tells me that some people are weak minded ponces.

trim101, do us all a favour please. Start a Pink Lady thread, a Champagne Cocktail thread, or a Cider thread. Enthrall us with your cultured palate.
Australian, particularly any Carlton United Breweries. Coopers and Cascade are also good Australian beers.

I find European beers too yeasty and North American beers lacking taste
philcore (317 D(S))

American beers like Budweiser, Coors and Miller are definitely tastless - but there are MANY American beers that are very good. If you find something by Sam Adams or New Belgian or 4 peaks, I think you'll be impressed.

And Trim, I went to the place that was most likely to have the most obscure international stuff, and it's funny, the only Ciders they had were the 2 you said to stay away from - Woodpecker and Strongbow. Well, even though you said to avoid them, I figured it would at least be a decent introduction to real Ciders, They were both pretty good. Definitely better than the American shit that's just carbonated apple juice with vodka in it.

I also found a Coopers, I'm going to open it now - I'll give my review on that in a while ...

Trim, what do you think of Samual Smith's Cider? They had that there too, but I didn't try it. If you think that's better than than Strongbow or Woodpecker, let me know.

oh and I find it ironc that Stella - considered a feminine beer in America, is considered a wife-beater's beer in England. I guess it's all about image ...

which coopers did you get? any good?

im not much of a beer drinker, indeed my fav beer is BeerHoi from vietnam, not a brand as such , that just means freshly brewed beer that they only keep for a day coz it lacks preservatives (well thats what im told anyway) others might think its a bit watery but at 20cents a glass it hits my spot!
philcore (317 D(S))
12 Jan 09 UTC
ok so I just finished the Coopers Premium Lager - it tasted a lot like heineken or Becks. Not too much different than Budweiser, Coors or Miller, honestly. A very light crisp beer with a touch - a hint - of flavor. But that's it, just a hint.

So while I was there, I picked up some Boddington, since I can only usually get that at bars here, and I'm drinking that. Much better than Coopers, but not as good as many of the American beers available.

and sean - 20 cents a glass? I'll drink anything if it's that cheap - and I'd enjoy the hell out of it. Unfortunately, if it only lasts a day, it'll probably never be available in the states.

Heineken - blech! I took a swig of one once and about spit it out. Tried it again 5 minutes later and had the same reaction. My buddy got a kick out of it when I said "Ich! Tastes like ass." and when I tried it again and said "Nope, still tastes like ass." Our running joke is "Now we understand why it is nicknamed Heiny, cause it tastes like one."
Dr. J Who-Son (100 D)

Australia - Carlton Draught, dont even bother with fosters - we make it by pissing in bottles and telling everyone its beer - then we sell it to our colonial masters for a nice profit.
Chrispminis (916 D)
12 Jan 09 UTC
Draugnar and anyone else who mentioned Heineken. It's a weird thing I noticed but Heineken actually tastes different depending on where it's brewed. I have no idea why that would be... but in Toronto, Heineken tastes like heiny. In Montreal, it tastes acceptable. We actually brought back some to Toronto to test it out, and there is a noticeable difference!
Just reading this thread makes my mouth salivate, mmmmmm nothing like a good old barley sandwich....

Moderator needed...
We have a game stuck on pause (game 7771) in which all contestants have voted for a draw except for one who hasn't logged in since Tue, Jan 06.
At what point can a moderator declare this game a draw?

Question on multiaccounting
Before you all start flaming against me, I am merely curious I have niether the time nor the inclination to attempt what I am inquiring about.
If some one makes multiple accounts, but never uses them in the same game, thereby not cheating, is it still wrong and ban-able?
A possible ligit use for this would be to play more games than you can on one accounts limited points.

I don't remember exactly, but I am pretty confident I finalized my moves late Friday night (GMT), or at least, made them and updated, but not finalized waiting for some late information exchange. And in two of my games (at least) these moves didn't went through.

Paris is inland, so that tells me no, but I'm not leaving it up to chance. Why is the option to build a fleet in Paris there if it's inland anyways?
