The Electoral College
Why not start a rousing discussion about the whether to keep the Electoral College or do away with it? We need a distraction from this wacky presidential election.

Dems can only win with fraud.

The Supreme Court of the United States of America recognized the obsolete chance that voter fraud committed by people voting without IDs will impact an election. Read up on it.

That was at Tolstoy.
TrPrado (461 D)

And lol saying Dems can only win with fraud is going to be a fun excuse you constantly give when Trump loses. Also, the recent evidence had everything to do with just the primaries. And the specific laws were in fact quite targeted. Should voter fraud be kept from happening? Yes. But those laws weren't the way to get there.

the candidates choose those electors and would kill them if they didn't comply. even so one elector pledged to gore didn't vote for him.

The Electoral College lets Trump claim the election is rigged.

Arizona Republican legislators voted for tough voter ID law when the last prosecuted case was a Republican voter that passed the ID restrictions and voted in Arizona and Colorado in the same year. The case was dismissed on the grounds that there was no office on both ballots that overlapped.

I watched those videos about the Electoral College. My opinion is that you should reform the system to modern times and count all individual votes in the presidential election and select the one getting the most votes. And obviously should all citizens of the USA independently of where they live get a vote.

@peterlund: That's the conclusion I came to after watching CGP Grey's videos as well. I used to be a big defender of the EC, but my defenses were based on false assumptions

Only people who want the system to be open to mass voter fraud (the Democratic Party) don't want ID laws. That is so they can manipulate the system and use fraudulent votes to win.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
15 Oct 16 UTC
I want ID laws, but I want state IDs distributed electronically to every single person, not only to people who can take the time to be processed and go get one. Until that happens, ID laws are a method of suppression against those who don't have a state issued ID.

I'm not sure if we can say that or not ND. I doubt either political party would align itself intentionally to encourage any form of voter fraud.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

The Democrats already committed voter fraud during this election cycle, brain, so I'm not sure how you can say that with a clear conscience.
peterlund (1310 D(G))
15 Oct 16 UTC
For once I am going to agree with ND. :)
Yes I agree that voters should ID themselves unless you do it like in the developing world and tag the hand of every voter with lots of inc.
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
But that's not always possible, peter. Voters register to particular districts, and because of that there's the opportunity to vote through the mail (absentee voting). Because some people don't have to show up to the polls to cast their vote, not everyone can get inked. For example, I'm registered in Tulsa, but I'm in Norman most of the time, and the weekend before and day of Election Day, I'll be in Oklahoma City, so I won't have the opportunity to cast my vote in person, but I am going to vote through the mail.

I wonder if Grey will vote this election, i know he lives in the UK now, but is still an american citizen, so should be entitled to vote... i'll be sure to listen to his podcast with Brady and find out (was listening to his review of Ex Machina last night before i fell asleep)

I'm agianst anything which makes US elections fairer! I think each state should have 6 electoral college votes, and then distribution for population. Also black people should count as 3/5ths of a person as the framers intended.
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
Yes, there are procedures in place to allow overseas American citizens to vote.
peterlund (1310 D(G))
15 Oct 16 UTC
Here (in Sweden) I can vote in the post office many weeks in advance but I have to present some kind of valid id. But even if I vote in advance, I am still able to go to the polling station on election day and change my vote after identifying myself. In this case my postal vote will be disregarded.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Oct 16 UTC
@TrPrado, i know, but CGP Grey has on a number of occasions explained how interested he is in the theory of voting, but not so interested in the practice... ie he didn't ovte in the last UK general election, iirc. (which he was entitled to vote in)

Ya the thing you are all forgetting is that voter ID laws affect African-Americans, Latino voters more. Many African-Americans dont have an ID.
peterlund (1310 D(G))
15 Oct 16 UTC
TrPrado. I am not counting the USA into the group of developing nations, and therefore I think you should be able to identify yourselves when voting. You should be able to vote in any post office within the borders of the USA or at any embassy weeks before.
And you should also remove the requirement to register in advance.
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
That doesn't make being sure who's voting isn't an inherently bad idea, brain.
TrPrado (461 D)

Okay, that was terrible wording.

How hard can it be to get an id if you are an citizen of the USA?
brainbomb (290 D)

Youd be surprised how fearful the inner cities are of Cops, ID's, government. Many Black men dont carry an ID or even own one. Its a different life.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
Not hard at all. It's doubleplus easier than trying to live without an ID. In many states, it's actually illegal NOT to have one.

Why no messages setting option?
Why is aviable the no messages setting? I think is against the essence of the game, that's diplomacy. Nevertheless this option is very common. I think Diplomacy without diplomacy is like basketball without basket (or ball if you prefer). What do you think about it?

Question of Electoral Ethics
For the district where I'm registered to vote, the US representative seat is only being sought by one person. By Oklahoma state statute, unopposed candidates don't even appear on the ballot, nor is there the opportunity to write-in a candidate. Do you think the name of unopposed candidates should be printed on the ballot?

Full Press Explanation
I searched the rules and the faq. I may be dense. I cannot find an explanation of what full press means. Also, is it illegal to send a PM to one of the players in a game if the players are not anonymous? For example, if I see the deadline ticking down and my ally hasn't put in orders, may I send her a PM to alert her that she might miss the turn?

Unranked games have counted towards GR
Hey just wanted you guys to know that GR has been broken for a while now, with unranked games being counted towards GR since it's been integrated.

Do not worry, I've already contacted the mods, and they are working feverishly to fix the problem and it should be fixed by the next GR update, but I felt that all of you should know. Hold on one second while I get my proof for this.
