Well, iirc he actually did go undercover in the Gondor military for some period of time, and for a significant portion of time, I don't think he felt like Gondor needed the king to return, as the Stewards were ruling fine. Plus, without shit hitting the fan, why would the people of Gondor want the change of rule, or see the need for it?

He battled with Rohan for a short while, they mention that in the book. I think he was trying to keep the north alive but eventually greater forces drew him back south

Have any of you heard of "The Worm Ouroboros" by E.R. Eddison? It's a contemporary to the Tolkien books, and it has a trilogy following it, too. You can find old copies on ebay and Amazon.

Aragorn was 10 years old at the time of the Battle of Five Armies...

Aragorn was honing his skill in battle, tending to his dying mother, and mainly traveling. He travelled after he saw Arwen for the first time near Rivendell. He asked Lord Elrond for her hand, but Elrond deemed him unworthy until he was older and wiser. He knew he was the descendant of the last captain of Arnor and Isildur of Gondor, but he also knew that in time, he would realize his own strength and destiny.

He went on a couple 20-ish year journeys to fight undercover like Warden and James said. He fought with Rohan and Gondor, making a name for himself (although taking a different one) and starting his legend. The third time he retired from traveling, he returned to Lórien. There, he met Arwen and they exchanged vows.

So, basically he was honing his fighting and survival skills, while realizing and building his legend.

He was 80 at the battle of Helms Deep.

Appendix A, part (v) that's present at the back of Return of the King tells part of that story. It's on page 420ff in my dad's old box set of the trilogy. Aragorn was being raised in Elrond's house under the name "Estel" because his dad had died when he was 2, and he needed somewhere to live. His mother Gilraen lived there as the last royal refugees three kingdoms which used to comprise Arnor. During that time Aragorn/Estel learned statesmanship, fighting, lots of lore, and he also met and fell in love with Arwen (called "Undómiel"). He did spend some time in Lothlórien as well, where he proposed to Arwen.

The claim that he spent some time fighting undercover in the Gondor military is... well, it's suggested, but never really stated. The guy doing that fighting was named "Thorongil" under the then-steward Echthelion II. He left Gondor before Denethor II became steward in T.A. 2984. It makes sense that he was doing the fighting undercover... Aragorn had proposed to Arwen in 2980, but was told he had to wait. Why not a brief stint in the military fighting against pirates? Aragron was born in T.A. 2931, which would have made him 50-53 years old when fighting undercover. See the timelines on pp 461-2 for more details.
