Gunboat does allow for communication, although it is somewhat limited which makes the more elaborate and entertaining strategies impossible to play, but for me it suffers from two major flaws.

Firstly it adds a large dose of random chance. You have no way of influencing the often crucial first phase beyond your own units. As such you can easily, for example, find yourself being attacked by several powers through no fault of your own. This huge luck element is very much against the spirit of diplomacy.

The second feature of gunboat that kills it as an option for me is that it's essentially a public press variant, in the sense that all forms of communication you can use can be read as easily by every other player in the game. This robs the game of its greatest elements and leaves it a pale shadow of real diplomacy.

That's not to say that it's not a game that demands skill to play, and it's clearly enjoyable for a lot of people, but diplomacy it ain't. Some will tell you that it is a good tool for developing tactical play and getting a good read of the board, but this is a nonsense. Gunboat and diplomacy are too different, and the boards are essentially written in different languages.

I just hate to play with liers and hipocrats and racists .
As not native english speker i felt many tines discriminated in a game just because of grammar .
Also i think that it is a waist of time to use diplomacy and talk at all when in fact you know what the other player is going to do because of logic.
The diplomacy of your movements is more effective then your words.

Because it gives the players the oportunity to pm outside the game and it is against the rules.

Does it? If someone in such a game pm'd you what would your reaction be? I'm guessing you would contact the mods, who would then have clear evidence of cheating to act on. As cheating strategies go, it's ridiculously high risk.

Of course it is much less risky if the two potential cheats already know each other. But if that's the case then anonymity doesn't actually make it any harder for them. In fact it probably makes it easier as the cheating will be less obvious.
