Duel of the Fogeys
I'm looking for a new game, and after my last exasperating experience playing with the general population (a full-press game where nobody talked, I got teamed up on by my neighbors but still survived to the SIX-way draw) I'm looking for some new players. I think it would be fun to try and play with some people that fall into the age group of 30+. Aside from full-press with 2- or 3-day phases, I'd be open to any other combination of settings. Any takers?

Lying Vs Diplomacy
What are your views on how you conduct negotiations with other players? Do you think lying is a necessary and important part of the game, or do you tell the truth all the time but mislead people, or do you have another method?

Everyone has a different style, some people's style includes non-stop lies, some try not to lie except when absolutely needed. I've seen both and nearly everything inbetween work. It's just figuring out how to tailor your personality to a strategy.

Putin, please do not lie. I have asked you in threads specifically as well as multiple times in PMs to stop attacking other members such as ssorenn. You continually reject that you have attacked anyone or that anyone's opinion except yours matter. If you can't respect the site owner or the mods and follow their requests not to attack or provoke other members or the mods, please leave.

Thank you for understanding, and I apologize to others for this slight derailing of the thread.

@MM: that's what I do a vast majority of the time as well. It produces press that has a genuine and honest feel to it.
ssorenn (0 DX)
06 Sep 14 UTC
" a feel" to the press, if it is an untruth, it's still a lie...there's no sugar coating here.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
06 Sep 14 UTC
@Octavious, I actually have been, there's a couple people who can't help themselves, but for a site of over a thousand active members and 280 members posting in the last month I think having issues with under 10 people is quite good.
Octavious (2701 D)
06 Sep 14 UTC
A very severe definition of lying, ssorenn. By that standard almost everything I say is a lie, as I never set anything in stone until the last possible moment. That most of my lies turn out to be good reflections of reality does not make them any more honest than the ones that end up being somewhat poorer reflections.
Octavious (2701 D)
06 Sep 14 UTC
Out of interest, jmo, how are the numbers of posts per day holding up now that things have settled down? My impression is that there are fewer of them, but that may be distorted somewhat by coming back after a month's break to discover our forum, which at times has been amongst the heighest peaks of the internet's debating community, hosting an argument between Putin and Thucy regarding the merits of roller skates.

If one is speaking, one is lying.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

@ssorenn: You missed what was said. MM commented that he sends posts that are truth at the time, but when something else comes along that he commits to, his prior truth becomes a lie, even though he spoke from truth at the time. There was no sugar coating going on.

The "feel" of the press is the sincerity that was put into it. If I send press that is sincere, then it takes a whole different feel than press that I send that is intentionally false at the time it was sent. For example, if I'm playing as Russia and I tell Germany that I'm not going to Prussia and Silesia, and at the time I say it, I mean it, then it's a truthful statement sent with sincerity. If, later on, I receive a message from Austria saying that he wants to hit Germany and he will support me into Silesia and I agree to such a move, it doesn't make my original press to Germany a lie at the time I sent it, it just means that it becomes a lie afterward.

I'm not trying to parse words. People do this all the time when they agree to something and then back out of it.
ssorenn (0 DX)
06 Sep 14 UTC
That's subjective. Were also not talking about how sincere the press sounds.

"it doesn't make my original press to Germany a lie at the time I sent it"

Yes it does. It is a lie. If you say you are not going to do something, and then you do it. you have lied.

I know what your saying Tru, and I'm not actually disagreeing, as I use this myself...no matter what the original intent was, if things change, and they do all the time, it still becomes a lie....no matter how you want to phrase it. It's the very nature of diplomacy.

Tru Ninja/MM are right and, further, it's hard to say that something you mean at the time is a lie. For example, if you tell someone that you will play basketball with them tomorrow and then you break your leg on the way over, you didn't lie, circumstances just changed.

Also, 100% on team mapleleaf/putin in this little sub argument. zultar stop being a dick.

"For example, if you tell someone that you will play basketball with them tomorrow and then you break your leg on the way over, you didn't lie, circumstances just changed."

That's comparing apples to oranges. Not remotely the same.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

Don't get me wrong. I agree that it's a lie after everything boils away. I'm simply saying that my original intent wasn't a lie. I unequivocally made it a lie when I changed things and didn't tell the other person.

I'm not sure if what I do counts as "lying" when I do it. I make different, mutually exclusive proposals to different players, and as time goes on I decide which ones to abide by. I guess *all* of my proposals are lies when I make them, and only become truth after I actually do what I said I was going to do.

Even though things are technically considered lies, they are necessitys in conducting diplomacy with seven players. Sides need to be chosen, otherwise there would be a lot of 6-7 player draws....lol

AWB, those are lies, but if you're playing Diplomacy in general one ought to understand that that's the nature of the game and that even if someone lied in that way, it doesn't mean it was out of undying hatred, just out of early game practicality, which often has little impact on the whole game. That's where people go wrong, when they freak out over opening press.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
06 Sep 14 UTC
@maple, if you want it looked at then send an email. Same as a cheating accusation. If you're going to accuse someone of something then it needs to be in private. We always have and always will require emails for accusations so there is a record for future moderators and for appeals upon abuse.

I'm not the person who would look into your issue. In this case it'll probably be 2ndWhiteLine. I have no way of knowing if this thread is going to catch his interest or if he'll see your complaint, which is another reason why we use the email. I know he and the other mods check that, so I'll simply flag this as a case for him to look at.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
06 Sep 14 UTC
@uclabb, the problem with what you said regarding Zultar being unfair is that you are looking at this "subargument" as you mentioned. The two separate issues have involved multiple threads, pm's, and emails over weeks now. This is another reason we prefer using the mod email to handle problems. So people don't jump to conclusions without having seen all, or even most of the information related to what is going on.

What was the username of the guy who used to be an israeli soldier again?
He had a nice story that more or less started with how he used to be in the army and didn't like the destruction so made sure he got fired. The forum community sort of convinced him that he got some things wrong.
I'd like to ask him something. I suppose the odds are small but I can at least post this thread.
