Duel of the Fogeys
I'm looking for a new game, and after my last exasperating experience playing with the general population (a full-press game where nobody talked, I got teamed up on by my neighbors but still survived to the SIX-way draw) I'm looking for some new players. I think it would be fun to try and play with some people that fall into the age group of 30+. Aside from full-press with 2- or 3-day phases, I'd be open to any other combination of settings. Any takers?

What are your views on how you conduct negotiations with other players? Do you think lying is a necessary and important part of the game, or do you tell the truth all the time but mislead people, or do you have another method?

Israel stealing more West Bank land from the Palestinians
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-29008045
Israel stealing another 1000 acres of land, apparently because 3 teenagers got killed in that area.
By that measure Israel would be giving up their country to the Gazans for the kids they have killed ..... dirty scum-sucking hypocrites.

Alternative Color Schemes
So, one of the changes in the works may be a color scheme change. I'll be honest, I think our current one is ugly and people have trouble distinguishing Austra/Germany and Russia/Germany. So I've done a couple of mock ups

Hi, I'm AverageWhiteBoy. Y'all might have seen me around, doing things.

Have any of you caught a racist vibe from me? If the answer is "yes," I won't even be offended. I have no right to be. I am, after all, just an average white boy.

Where would one best try getting a humanitarian plan going that...
... may require international backing to succeed?
It's almost certainly not what you think at this point. For now, please don't ask why I ask, just answer the question. Where would you start trying to achieve such an ambitious thing?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
05 Sep 14 UTC
That depends on a lot of things. How much money is needed? How many people? Why does it require international backing? Are you going to Syria? More details would really help. In lieu of any relevant details, get in touch with someone from Amnesty; they usually have clubs in high schools.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
05 Sep 14 UTC
Money and people are seperate issues, but probably quite a bit. Right now, I'm thinking about publicity and being backed/accepted by several government officials in various countries. That's desired because it would be quite a high profile action and pretty much any help/non-interference from a government would help.
Not going to Syria :-)
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I'd also rather have it known as my initiative, rather than a project from Amnesty or something. That's not me insisting on getting fame or something FYI, I actually think it increases the slim odds.

Something that touches an existing nerve. You have to work with people's fear and greed to get to the top.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
06 Sep 14 UTC
Which people's fear and greed, though?

For now, I just need to know to which people I could go to turn a 'fun idea' from a teenager into a potential plan.

Without any clue as to what this plan is you won't get much in the way of good advice.

Make a viral YouTube video, start a hashtag, get your friends to "like" your status. Cover the night with some posters. After a couple days of fame, some people will start to question the feasibility and wisdom of your plan. Have a nervous breakdown and masturbate in the streets.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
06 Sep 14 UTC
The reason I'm not being too open is because what pangloss is mentioning is exactly what I don't want to happen. It shouldn't be a hype.
Let me put it this way:
Where does one go to get government consent for a humanitarian that needs government consent?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
06 Sep 14 UTC
And any idea's work, even if you're not certain whether it would work. I'm capable of figuring that out myself, I just need somewhere to start.
Octavious (2701 D)
06 Sep 14 UTC
Why would you need government consent? I assume whatever passes for the citizens advice bureau down your way will be a good start
Invictus (240 D)

It depends. Do you want to for sure help people or do you want to just get the program going?

pangloss (363 D)

steephie, I think you're misunderestimating the power of social media. Successful campaigns over the past couple of years have actually fixed Africa.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
06 Sep 14 UTC
@pangloss: Okay (lol at "fixed Africa" though). Publicity is not the issue right now though.
For the sake of argument, let's pretend I already have the publicity. What then?
Partysane (10754 D(B))

I tried, honestly, to put together a serious answer steephie, but without further information it is pretty much impossible.
If you want to do infrastructural work like building schools in some godforsaken village where they eat people and then let other people run/ruin it is one thing, if you want to organize the collection/transport/distribution of food or other supplies it would be a totally different thing.
To get anything going you need some experience (maybe do an internship with an organization that is active in the field you want to get into), money (and a well thought out plan what you want to do with it and how much is needed in the short/medium/long term and how you get it and keep it flowing) and contacts to people already in place who help you with planning as well as with the actual work (those peple need to be paid aswell).
Think of those contacts as fixers, just as the ones journalists use. Try getting those by the way of getting in touch with local organizations or again by tapping into someone elses already established network.
You definitly need to know the real situation on the ground, that again means you have to travel there to get at least a good idea of the organizational problems you will be facing and formulate a plan to overcome those.
Speaking the language of the place where you want to work is pretty much a must, or at least having enough people who do.

If that (this bare minimum) is in place you can go and try to get official backing. Without it you can forget it.

If you want to work in high risk enviroments there are some other things that are needed and come to mind.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
06 Sep 14 UTC
Okay, that's enough to go by for now I suppose. Thanks.
Steephie, I work in this field, and in general, whatever your idea is, the odds are that some organisation is already doing it in some form. Find them. Second, individual actions rarely amount to anything, if you want impact you need to have a broad base of support (which in turn means you should be willing to share details of the idea! - people can't help you if they don't know what with). Third, governments very rarely condone anything except their own actions (and those even piecemeal). Most radical change comes from NGOs which lobby for international treaties of sorts (like the arms treaty, or human rights treaties).

So think NGO first (existing if possible, set one up if you must), then convince governments second would be my advice.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
07 Sep 14 UTC
TMOW is right about governments versus NGOs.

A huge amount of the human rights treaties we have to day really were not driven by any governments, but rather NGOs did the legwork and campaigned their way into seeing them signed.

A good book on the subject is "Mobilizing for Human Rights" by Beth Simmons.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

"Mobilizing Human Rights" is the actual title, sorry.

What was the username of the guy who used to be an israeli soldier again?
He had a nice story that more or less started with how he used to be in the army and didn't like the destruction so made sure he got fired. The forum community sort of convinced him that he got some things wrong.
I'd like to ask him something. I suppose the odds are small but I can at least post this thread.
P.S. We really need a search function.
