What the hell has happened to double yolk eggs?
Seriously now, where did they go? There were never huge numbers of them, but they cropped up every now and then to provide unparalleled excitement at the breakfast table. Now they seem to have vanished into the murky depths of history along with the space shuttle and the cream that used to float on top of a pint of milk.

Is this evidence that humanity is in terminal decline?

"[name], I'm sorry you don't understand, but given our past interactions, I suspect you don't actually care and are just looking to waste my time. This conversation is considered resolved."

Can someone explain why I keep seeing this in basically every thread (not to me, mind; just in general)? Did someone keep saying it and now it's sort of an ironic in-joke? I don't understand!

If you know evolution is true why haven't you grown wings?
Well????
This is a question I love to put to armchair scientists on Internet forums. It puts an end to their ignorant bullshit before it even gets a chance to start.

Gobble, yeah we do.
Why would you have to INVENT something to make us fly if we didn't need to?
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Flying = more effort.
Sitting on a plane = less effort.

Evolution makes species efficient -> we fly on planes not wings.
How can any science professor claim to know evolution is true without being able to fly?
The answer you get from the academic is some mumbo jumbo about their being more important things than flying.
Of course this notion is thrown right out the window by academics when they are talking about someone else's money that needs to be taken by government to fund their flights to fancy academic conferences.
Back to the point though.
Academics can't fly because you only fly when you take risks.
Academia is antithetical to risk. Academics demand safety. No matter what they do they run absolutely no risk of losing safety once it is granted as long as they don't rape the cat so to speak.
Individuals in the real world bath in risk. They swim in it, eat it, live it, and breathe it.
Risk either devours the real person or they devour it and become able to fly.

So a science professor knows next to nothing about real flight.
One of my personal favorite academic scientists, Bob Jones, started an aeronautics engineering firm. The firm lost money and Bob had to seek new investors and reorganize giving up substantial control to the new investors who were better engineers.

You don't grow wings because you need them. That's not how evolution works. Once in a while a certain gene mutates because of some sort of error. If the new, mutated, gene is beneficial to the species then it's passed on. There is no way a human would mutate in a way that would give him wings, and even if that happened you wouldn't be able to fly because a human lacks the aerodynamic shape or the hollow bone structure that allows (most!!!) birds to fly.
Beetle Bailey (394 D)
23 Mar 12 UTC
What a silly question. Some birds, who used to fly, don't fly any more because having stronger bones and more weight gave them a biological advantage that flying couldn't solve. Most flight birds are near the bottom of the food chain. Only raptors (birds-of-prey, not Spielberg's dinosaur) can claim food chain dominance but their flight doesn't give them an overwhelming advantage in the ecosystem evidenced by the small numbers of raptors.

I am a Christian. I believe in the creation. But I believe God used evolution (and still uses it) to create the diversity of life on this earth. Even God is bound by physical laws (he just happens to have a perfect understanding of physics, unlike us silly mortals). I think the big bang theory is rot, but evolution is obviously real. Anyone who ignores it is simply closing their mind to common sense.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
23 Mar 12 UTC
Thank you Dimitar, for pointing out the technical method of how natural selection works to satisfy the need of a new characteristic. I happen to have studied Biology so I know that stuff.
But really, to the layman it suffices to say that humans don't have wings because they don't need them.

"I think the big bang theory is rot, but evolution is obviously real."

Why the discrepancy there?
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
@BB - Huh? God is bound my the laws of physics? What the fuck happened to "Omnipotent" when we refer to God. God is bound by *nothing* according to the Bible. I think, if there is a God, he isn't bound by physics but, instead, defines the laws of physics.
Beetle Bailey (394 D)

If the universe exploded out from one chunk of matter, the maximum velocity of exploded matter occurred right at the time of initial explosion. And from then on, everything should be slowing down until it all stops and begins to collapse on itself again.

However, evidence has been show that says matter is not slowing down, but speeding up. The rate of expansion of the universe is actually increasing, not decreasing. This has been shown by the theory of red shift. Just as sound coming from an object that is moving toward you has a higher pitch and a lower pitch if moving away (Doppler effect), light coming from an object has a higher wavelength (shifts to red) if moving away at a very fast rate. Over the years, the red shift from the majority of stars has increase in wavelength, meaning they are actually speeding up while they move away from us.

So that doesn't disprove that the universe used to be compressed into one mass, it just disproves that it will slow down and start to collapse again.
Beetle Bailey (394 D)

Can God break his own laws? Of course not. So he is bound by his own laws. He is perfect, and therefore perfectly obedient also.
Mujus (1495 D(B))
23 Mar 12 UTC
The Bible is true, but not all of the Bible is true in a literal sense. Did God create the world in seven literal (24-hour) days, and Adam by hand from the dust? Sure, it's possible. But it's also possible that the dust means from the same elements as are in the Earth, and the seven days were seven periods of formation. But just as the complexity of a car or a building tells us that someone must have created it, the amazing complexity of the systems of the natural world tell us the same thing--All of this was designed and created by God. I think the important thing is for Christians not to be afraid of whatever real science shows, and for scientists not to be afraid of believing in a Creator God. The two concepts are not exclusive.
Beetle Bailey (394 D)
23 Mar 12 UTC
Mujus: Exactly.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
@BB - You *really* need to talk to a theological leader in your community. The Christian God is not bound by his own laws. Can He break them? Of course he can. He broke the big one about death when he raised up Lazarus and again, when he, in his human form of Jesus Christ, rose from the dead. He is *omnipotent*. Whether he chooses to or not is his own business, but you are seriously confused if you think the Christian God is bound by his own laws out of some physical limitation. Of course, this is assuming you believe in the stories relaye din the New Testament.

The God of the Jews also broke the laws of physics all the time. We call them miracles. Parting the Red Sea for Moses and his people... Making it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. Turning the Nile to blood. If you believe the OT or the Torah, all of these would have been breaking the rules.

So, if you believe as you claim, you can not put limits on God.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
I agree Mujus, but to deny the omnipotence of God as BB does is just wrong, if you claim to be a Christian. Limiting God through your speech because *you* (the vernacular you) don't understand him does not mean he is actually limited, just that the speaker's understanding is woefully inadequate.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
@BB - Your redshift explanation is bunk. Red shift objects are moving away from us, they may be moving slower or faster or even the same speed but in a different direction. And as far as your dispersion explanation, different particles have different mass and therefore can store more energy moving both farther and faster from the same explosion. Did yo take physics beyond the high school level? I doubt it based on your limited understanding.

Draugnar:
You are putting too much credit in your understanding of physics. Omnipotent means He knows everything perfectly. And he can perform feats that appear as miracles to you and I because our understanding of physical laws is extremely limited. He has to obey his own laws. We have seen over and over again that a leader who flouts his own laws will soon loose all respect and therefore power and influence over his people.

I can't put limits on God. He puts limits on Himself. It's called obedience and he teaches it through example Jesus Christ was perfectly obedient. And perhaps, according to some higher law that I don't understand because I am a mere mortal, one who is perfectly obedient and never broke a law would have power over death. If you think God can go around doing whatever he wants breaking rules left and right, that you have sadly misunderstood who He is. He commanded us to be perfect, even as He is perfect.

@BB - No, omniscient means he *knows* everything. Omnipotent means all powerful, and Omnipresent means every where at all times and in all places. Your grasp of English is failing you considerably.

Teaching Gravity in School
Gravity is not proven and is called the theory of gravity, not the law of gravity. Since its only a theory it shouldn't be taught in school as there is insufficient evidence to prove that things fall towards the ground when dropped.

What if the power of a god were proportional to the number of followers he has?
Assume the god/gods of each religion have divine power proportional to the number of followers. Assume also that gods can carry out divine intervention.
What would happen to the world? Please only consider religions that have a considerable following in the modern day.
