What the hell has happened to double yolk eggs?
Seriously now, where did they go? There were never huge numbers of them, but they cropped up every now and then to provide unparalleled excitement at the breakfast table. Now they seem to have vanished into the murky depths of history along with the space shuttle and the cream that used to float on top of a pint of milk.

Is this evidence that humanity is in terminal decline?

"[name], I'm sorry you don't understand, but given our past interactions, I suspect you don't actually care and are just looking to waste my time. This conversation is considered resolved."

Can someone explain why I keep seeing this in basically every thread (not to me, mind; just in general)? Did someone keep saying it and now it's sort of an ironic in-joke? I don't understand!

Since there seem to be a bunch of video gamers on here I was curious if anyone else had a favorite theme from a video game.

I personally love the opening theme from Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the states).

Teaching Gravity in School
Gravity is not proven and is called the theory of gravity, not the law of gravity. Since its only a theory it shouldn't be taught in school as there is insufficient evidence to prove that things fall towards the ground when dropped.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
How do we know that Gravity pulls things down, and not pushes the earth up towards us?

If gravity is real, then how come the earth rotates around the sun, and not towards it, which it would if gravity was real?

According to a recent physics theory, the universe is two dimensional and flat. If that was the case how could we fall down from gravity?

Gravity is only a theory and has no place in our shools
krellin (80 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
Gravity is not proven? I don't agree. they may not have proven how it works, but to deny its proven existence? Balderdash...

No...don't bother going into a bunch of psycho mumbo-jumbo scientific explanation of what a theory is versus a law....gravity exists. Period.

@krellin: if its proven then why is it just a theory, theorys mean they aren't proven. Gravity is just like evolution, its only a theory and has no place in our schools.

@krellin: however its not lame, I was trying to issue the point that gravity is accepted by everyone, or almost everyone, and however it isn't 100% proven, just like evolution.

The difference between gravity and evolution being theories is the anti-evolution voice is louder.

My goal of this thead was to show how ridiculous the evolution is just a theory arguement is.

I believe it achieved this goal and so its not lame...

@Fasces -- I understand what your GOAL was...I'm telling you that you fail it completely. When the object of a discussion is GOD, there is zero proof, zero evidence, zero measurable experience scientifically.

Thus, when in an attempt to mock a God thread you use GRAVITY as the anology to God, you fail completely, because gravity is measurable, it can be felt, it is undeniable.

My point is not that you should not make a parody...my point is that THIS particular parody fails.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
23 Mar 12 UTC
Yeah Draugnar, the problem for me is that Krellin's rant in the latest abortion thread was hurtful, completely unjustified, and directed at personal friends of mine. I will never un-mute him, and if I found out he had died a painful and humiliating death, I would rejoice.

@ Fasces - Jeezus, is TC still here? I've had him muted for months.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
@krellin: Well you clearly didn't understand the thread I was parodying then.

I wasn't comparing gravity to god, I was comparing gravity to evolution. Lets see if this comparison is justified:

Both are theories
Both have massive amounts of evidence, none of which is conclusive
Both are believed to by factual be a majority of the scientific community of said area.
Both are taught to school kids in ways that convince kids that they are fact and are laws, not theories.

The comparison of the theory of gravity and theory of evolution actually makes perfect sense in the context I was implying it to.

@krellin - As Fasces pointed out (and the rest of us got when he posted it) He was mocking a *very* parallel thread posted by HolyCrusadtard. It seems your *own* comprehension failed on this one.

Consider the consequences of this "theory" if it proves untrue. What if gravity stops? Those poor Australians would all fall off the planet! Fortunately, those of us in the northern hemisphere would be safe and sound on top of the planet, where the ground would thankfully interrupt our fall.

No, you're actually wrong. Australia is the right way up. We'll be standing when you all fall off!
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
Actually, if gravity stopped, we would all go flying out into space from wherever we were out as we are in strightline motion being acted upon by gravitational force to keep us in contact with the planet. That results in a circular motion that, without gravity would revert to stright line motion causin us all to leave the planet at a gradual arc (from the ground's perspective) and sen us off into space. Of course, that is assuming that the planet itself and our own molecules didn't just seperate do to a lack of gravitational cohesion holding them together.

Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
23 Mar 12 UTC
draugnar the molecules of our body are not held together by gravity. They are held together by chemical bonds...which are electromagnetic bonds in general.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
@Gobble - maybe the molecules are, but what of larger chunks? And what of the sudden vacuum of earth no longer having an atmosphere or us even being in it? Would we not either instantly boil our blood if on the sunlit side or freeze on the dark side until the earth moved from between us and the sun's radiation at which point we would thaw and our blood wouild boil.

But it was more a fun observation of Newtonian physics and its results if gravity suddenly failed.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
23 Mar 12 UTC
We wouldn't be able to predict the consequences. The precise functioning of gravity is still not well known in physics. We know its properties but not where it originates or its links to the other fundamental forces, so it would be hard to posit what would happen if suddenly gravity disappeared.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
And I think other things would be at issue as well. After all, a gravity well theoretically requires movement to exist. So, presumably, for gravity to stop, movement of all sorts would have to stop, include the rotation of electrons around their nuclei. Presumably, that would really funkify the chemical/molecular bonds as well as metallic/electromagnetic ones. Can't exchange electrons when they won't move.

Fasces349 (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
I love how the onion also came up with this idea, once again proves to Krellin that my analogy has merit.

"lack of gravitational cohesion holding them together. "
its not gravity that holds us together, its electromagnetism, the attraction between the protons and electrons of the molocules in out bodies. We would stay together.

We also wouldn't gear off to space since the counter balance force of gravity is always equal to that of gravity and is proven by Newtons first and third laws of motion. However the earth would no longer orbit the sun but would leave the orbit and gear of into space.

We would only remain on the earth for as long as our feet remain on the ground...
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 12 UTC
Except, fasces, the earth itself is rotating. so it would gear off the sun, but as it continued to roatet, our bodies and lose objects would continue to move in a straitght line causing us to eventually move off the earth if we didn't hold onto something becuase the friction against our own mass (feet, ass, back, whatever) would push us forward with the rotation but not have the gravity to keep us planted there. Gravity doesn't cause the earth's rotation. It's in motion and would continue to stay in that motion around it's own axis.
I hate the pricks on this site. My arguement is not we should not teach evolution. My point was all theories should be taught not just one as a fact.
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
23 Mar 12 UTC
Draugnar, compare the earth to a table. North Americans, for example, stand on top of the table. Australians stand on the bottom of the table. (This is not to say that the earth is flat, but bear with me). If gravity were to fail, us lucky North Americans would not fall straight down because we stand on top of the table. Gravity is superfluous for us. It's not necessary, but nice to have when we play basketball and baseball. It essentially exists to keep us Northies from jumping off buildings and to learn to wear hard hats. Southies, unfortunately, depend entirely on gravity to stay on the earth. Similar to those Australians standing on the bottom of the table, held due to gravity, they would fall off the bottom of the earth if gravity failed.

This is simply physics. I can't believe there is so much confusion.

What if the power of a god were proportional to the number of followers he has?
Assume the god/gods of each religion have divine power proportional to the number of followers. Assume also that gods can carry out divine intervention.
What would happen to the world? Please only consider religions that have a considerable following in the modern day.
