The Electoral College
Why not start a rousing discussion about the whether to keep the Electoral College or do away with it? We need a distraction from this wacky presidential election.

I know where I stand. It's simple. Without the Electoral College, a very few states(the most populous)like California, New York, Florida and Ohio would dominate every election. The interests of the vast majority of states would be ignored. 4 or 5 campaign stops and the presidential candidates would be done. The rural food producing states would basically shut down while the population centers would eat the nation onto oblivion. Hey, wait, this is a good idea for a novel. Don't steal my idea, please.

That argument is tired. As it currently stands, they only campaign heavily in states where it's always close, which tend to be mostly the same states every election. Basing it on the popular vote means they'll have to focus on undecided voters everywhere instead of just in the few places it makes a difference. On top of that, smaller states matter more, because the electoral college isn't quite proportional, which is bullshit.

It's a relic of the idea that the states were going to be much much much more autonomous than they are. There's no place for it in modern America.

Electoral College isn't about popular vote or democracy. That's a good thing ;)

I'm all in favor of abolishing democracy, but it has to be done in a way that gives me more power, not less.

Step 1) fix electoral districts to be drawn in an unbiased manner
Step 2) congressional district method of counting electoral votes

That's proportional. Fixed your problem and maintained the Electoral College

Or just like... idk, change the swing states. Fuckin Florida doesn't know what's good for itself.

Yes let's do away with the concept of federalism Ghug.

States are relevant and of course we should keep the electoral college.
ND (879 D)

Although I think electoral points should be awarded based on congressional districts like in Nebraska and Maine for the entire country. I think that would make things more fair.

Republicans tried that: its called redistricting. It was found to mostly be voter suppression. In many states they added harsher voter ID laws. (Gee why?)
brainbomb (290 D)

And it changed the numerical values not significantly but some. Its also known as Gerrymandering.
TrPrado (461 D)

(The party in power of whichever state is going to redistribute, it's just that Republicans have dominated state legislatures in recent years.)

Meh. Electoral college or popular vote will, generally speaking, be fairly close. Only once in a rare while will they produce different winners. And then, when the country is fairly divided 50/50.

Tempest in a teapot.

Gore v Bush I think Gore won popular vote by 1 million people.
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
That's less than half a percent of the population at the time.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
15 Oct 16 UTC
And it was half a million, not a million. A lot, but a little at the same time. The only reason Gore was even in contention in that election in the first place was because of the flawed Electoral College that gave him enough votes to compete even though he carried 10 fewer states.
fourofswords (415 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
I just tend to think that the system is good because the rural states have more weight in the election and they tend to have more resources(with exceptions). Not having the electoral college would be like having a business that let's the customers determine production and price of the product.

Harsh laws? Yes let's get rid of all forms of ID including driver's licenses because it is harsh. Wow.

The Supreme Court already ruled against voter ID laws. Get over it.
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Oct 16 UTC
He didn't mean like drivers licenses. He did specifically say voter ID laws, which were very stringent. Though his own point is off on an unrelated tangent itself.

This whole argument would be completely moot if electors were free to choose the best candidate for president (as the framers intended) instead of being robots who are forced to vote according to the results of the beauty contests in their states.

Unbinding the electors could also theoretically get us a president out of this election that is neither of the evil, corrupt, maniacal, and wicked sociopaths the two ruling parties have shoved down our throats this year.
ND (879 D)

No voter IDs opens us up to voter fraud. We have already seen issues with fraud from the Dems this week.

Why no messages setting option?
Why is aviable the no messages setting? I think is against the essence of the game, that's diplomacy. Nevertheless this option is very common. I think Diplomacy without diplomacy is like basketball without basket (or ball if you prefer). What do you think about it?

Question of Electoral Ethics
For the district where I'm registered to vote, the US representative seat is only being sought by one person. By Oklahoma state statute, unopposed candidates don't even appear on the ballot, nor is there the opportunity to write-in a candidate. Do you think the name of unopposed candidates should be printed on the ballot?

Full Press Explanation
I searched the rules and the faq. I may be dense. I cannot find an explanation of what full press means. Also, is it illegal to send a PM to one of the players in a game if the players are not anonymous? For example, if I see the deadline ticking down and my ally hasn't put in orders, may I send her a PM to alert her that she might miss the turn?

Unranked games have counted towards GR
Hey just wanted you guys to know that GR has been broken for a while now, with unranked games being counted towards GR since it's been integrated.

Do not worry, I've already contacted the mods, and they are working feverishly to fix the problem and it should be fixed by the next GR update, but I felt that all of you should know. Hold on one second while I get my proof for this.
