Favorite local fruit: Blueberries

I think I may have even missed a few. I've barely kept track,
But I've been trying. I love fruit. This place is a haven for fruit.

The sweet cup was particularly delicious; it grows wild on a vine, related to passion fruit.

Ah yes cocoa is, of course, a fruit which can be eaten raw, and so have I done. 33

Starfruit is pretty great.

Strawberry by far.

Second is cantaloupe.

Plantains, passionfruit, coconut, and pineapple.

Everyone should eat bananas, everyone should eat blueberries, everyone should eat strawberries, and everyone should grow the latter in their backyard.

My favorite exotic fruit is the langsat but it's been ages since I've had any.

I should mention that the majority of those I listed I had never even eaten before, and most of the others I had never had other than in their bastardized imported form. Fresh bananas absolutely do not compare to the blananas they ship to the US.

And yeah starfruit was one of those id never had. There's a tree behind the farmhouse that's been bearing all summer. Love them.

And ackees are very good too, off your list Thucy. I just don't trust myself to prepare it properly in such a way that it won't kill me.

Southern peaches are incomparable, especially at their peak.

Passionfruit juice makes me believe in god for a few seconds.

What is langsat, bo? Human descriptions are always so much more colorful than googling.

Also. I forgot to mention "hog plum" which I found particularly delicious. Perfect juicy combination of sweet and tart, and smells of roses.

Slightly unripe white nectarines (I greatly enjoy the crunchiness and fresh flavor), fresh off the vine raspberry and durian (this one is not for everyone; king of the fruit; smells like rotten flesh).

I tried growing raspberries once. Birds. Fucking birds everywhere.

Zultar you need to visit the peach farmer who sets up shop at the old gas station on 12 South during the summer. You've never eaten a peach until you've had these.

I've made myself ackee for lunches dozens of times now, it's not too hard. When the fruit is open all the noxious gas is released, you just need to make sure when removing the seeds you also remove all the pinkish flesh from inside the hard yellow-white flesh, this stuff is mildly toxic and leaving too much in will make you feel nauseous.

But you'll be fine

I don't like peaches though. I like nectarines. Peaches have a different flavor and are often too sweet.
Has anyone else tried durian?

It was jarring when I went to Belize and saw them selling ackee. I thought it was banned.

I've heard tales of durian and mangosteen, and would love to try them both. I also want to try fresh lychee one of these days.

As to peaches, none top those found at roadside stands outside Fredericksburg, Texas in season. Our best "native" fruit in the Lone Star State, no doubt about that at all. The grapefruit is pretty good in Texas but the peaches blow everything out of the water

Ackee is banned in Belize?? It's not even banned in the US;
The FDA just puts strict important rules on its sourcing.

People describe langsat as a bittersweet grapefruit. I got them from a friend in Hawaii; she sent some over last summer. I haven't actually had a grapefruit before (only juice) so I can't say that for sure, but they almost taste like a banana to me. Kinda sweet, kinda bitter, kinda something else... it's tough to describe.

Have you had a duku? They're similar.

For those who love citrus, keep your eye out for "shaddocks" or pomelos; they're generally not grown in the US but sometimes get imported and make it into your produce aisle, they're like giant sweet grapefruits - fucking amazing.

I've had Deku leaf. Slightly bitter but you can fly on them.

Lol grapefruits are bittersweet themselves? Is langsat citrus? I thought I knew all the citrus varieties. Never heard of duku.

Speaking of "kind of like a banana", anyone from the eastern US interior ever had a pawpaw? They're said to taste a bit like banana. Id love to try one. One of the few significant fruits truly native and unique to our country.

I had breadfruit that's actually pretty good, tastes like a potato.

Roasted Breadfruit with salt fish was lunch for me yesterday. I ate the entire breadfruit myself lol. Delicious. No mutiny on that bounty.

I tried star fruit this summer too. I'm not sure if it was the fact that it was imported or what, but it was basically a $4.00 apple.
