I wrote this song for Ava! I used my friend's twelve string for instrumentation. The link works in this thread. Or it did for me.

Not happy with the Mods
I am currently upset with the mods of webdiplomacy. I allowed my younger sister to make an account on webdip with the use of my personal email. Soon after i am recieving emails accusing me of multi accounting when they can clearly see that my account and my sisters share no games what so ever.
DoctorJingles (212 D)
07 Apr 12 UTC
i explain this to them and because of they're questioning i tell them that i have friends that play this game, they expect me to tell them who my friends are. I really don't see how that is relevant and wont give their names up just so they can also get falsely accused of other outrageous things. does anyone else share my raging opinion of this?

My advice is go over the vdiplomacy.net

The mods are more laid back there (I should know, I am one) :P

lol, as for the question, I haven't had any hassles with the mods on this site and I found them to always handle situations reasonably.

I think this should be shown as a testament of how easily multis are caught and that you should be relieved that multis are almost always caught as a result.

thanks. and i'm glad multi's are caught farily easily. but when i explain something to them and have been a player for over a year and never had a problem with them before, you'd think they should just believe me and get off my case. it just really irritates me that they are acting this way about nothing

Do you play in the same games as your friends? Do you allow your friendships to control your in-game decisions. As far as the mods questions are concerned they're just trying to protect the community from cheats. The shared email address, the same IP for more than one account etc these are red flags. I think it is reasonable that they ask you a few questions. How else are they to protect the community if they dib't investigate.

of course i have played a couple games with my friends. how else would i have gotten started playing in the first place? and of course we made alliances, not just because we are friends, but because we know we can trust on another. i do the same with friends i make while playing with in webdip. you play one game with and find an ally you can trust, and you don't try to do it again in another game? you would be stupid to do otherwise
Barn3tt (41969 D)

um, DoctorJingles... you do understand that that causes an uneven playing field for the other players. I for one would not want to play with you and your friends. It is a legitimate concern and one that the mods are correct in exploring.

"you play one game with and find an ally you can trust, and you don't try to do it again in another game? you would be stupid to do otherwise"

I must be stupid then. Each game is a new game for me. I build my alliances entirely in game. I usually play decent players though and I think we all realize that the map is more important than past games.
DoctorJingles (212 D)
07 Apr 12 UTC
are you serious? you play a game with an honest person and then are expected not to ally with them in a future game even if you have never met them in real life? this game would be pointless without allys. but whatever, this irritates me to the point where im not even sure if i would want to play anymore, so i dont even really want to play anymore. so idc, if they want to delete my account and ban me, then do so. just leave my sister who enjoys playing this game, alone

"you play a game with an honest person and then are expected not to ally with them in a future game even if you have never met them in real life?"

I think of players as honest or dishonest. I expect players to play their best moves and I don't expect them to always tell me what their best moves really are. I take everything that everyone tells me with a dash of scepticism. If I think it is in another players best interest to lie to me, I assume they will lie. The fact that player was honest with me in the last game we played does not mean he will be honest with me in the next game. I should also add, I always play anonymous games.

It really is poor form to drag dirty laundry into the forum.

If you're genuinely upset with the way a mod is handling your case, you can politely ask that you be reassigned to abgemacht or fortknox (whose name I keep mistyping as fortknow). They're both very nice and, despite what you see on the forums between krellin and abge and between Draug and abge, abgemacht is actually a little nicer than fort. (also fort is currently on leave until Monday(?))

It was also poor form to let your sister sign up using your account. Did you really think that wouldn't get flagged as a multi?

The reason they're freaking out on you is, the best multi accounters will play several games independent of each username before playing one together. So while your story will check out (I am sure), they have to work off of appearances and past experiences when their software flags what appears to be a multi.

I don't go as far as Jingles, but if someone has stabbed me the last 2 times we have been allied, I'm not going to give him a third chance...

On top of that if I ever do play with friends and we ever do ally for some reason, I end up stabbing them, my morals just get the best of me and I feel like its cheating if I remain allied.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

@DrJingles: "you play a game with an honest person and then are expected not to ally with them in a future game...?"

There's a term I use to describe a player who is always honest and trustworthy in this game and can always be relied upon to keep his word:

A bad player.

This game is all ABOUT betrayal and backstabbing, man. If you're always completely trustworthy, you're doing it wrong!

Yes, and you ally with them in the next game, because you know they are flawed in that respect. Then you stab them every time for the win at the end.
DoctorJingles (212 D)
07 Apr 12 UTC
I was admitted to playing a few games with friends, i never said one or the other didn't stab them in the end. my one friend became very well known for that. i may seem stupid, butt this was just my way of venting and finding out what other peoples opinions were on the matter. thank you for your feedback.

@ Doc: Did you let the other players involved know that they had joined a game with friends who were more likely to form alliances with each other because of outside of the game relationships?

If you've done nothing wrong, telling the mods who your friends are shouldn't matter.

DJ.....I can tell what meta-gamin is...and that is clearly it. I would suggest, if you'd like to STAY on the site, to not meta-game, provide photo proof of your sister, and include your friends information...it *is* relevant to determine whether you or your friends should actually stay on the site or not. It's nothing personal, but you did break a few rules there chap.

I was mad at the mods....once...

This is the defination of meta-gaming and is frowned upon on the site. If you played a game with me and I refused to ally with you because you were not one of my friends who was also in the game I'm assuming you would become upset. It's not fair to other players in the game if you already have a notion of who you are going to ally with. If you can't abide by that generally accepted site rule then I would consider playing only anon games from here on out. As for the email part, it takes 30 seconds to make a new email these days. So from everything I read here it sounds like the mods are just protecting the rest of the site's players from unfair play.

The question that I ask when questioning whether somebody I may ally with is honorable isn't, "has this person stabbed me before?" it is, "has this person foolishly stabbed me before?" I expect and respect good stabs. If its a stab that allowed me to counterpunch then I don't trust them, because those are the stabs that take a LONG time to resolve - time for a third party to get the solo.
yebellz (729 D(G))

From the website rules (www.webdiplomacy.net/rules.php):

"2. No Meta-gaming

You can't make alliances for reasons outside a game, such as because you are friends, relatives or in return for a favour in another game. This is known as metagaming and is against the rules because it gives an unfair advantage to those involved. If you are worried that you can't stab someone because you want to stay friends, then that's fair enough but you can't join a game with them."

The above is all I have to add, as it is inappropriate to discussion cheating accusations on the forum. I think this thread should be silenced as it seems to be slanting toward cheating accusations at a particular player.

DoctorJingles, if you want to discuss this further, I would recommend continuing this dialog with the moderators via email at webdipmod@gmail.

There is meta-gaming and then there is metagaming. If players carry into the game pre-conceptions of other players derived from earlier games, this is in a sense meta-gaming. But this type of meta-gaming is not cheating. At worst it results in sub-optimal play (although I concede it can have its advantages at times).

The more pernicious type of meta-gaming that is defintiely cheating is where one deliberately forms alliances before entering the game, such as room-mates, for example, who join a game knowing full well that they will ally (even if they agree a stab at some point is on the cards). This is wrong. Even worse are players who form unbreakable alliances with the intention of harvesting points, by taking turns in taking the win, or by going for the 17/17 draw. This is definitely cheating.

I don't think DoctorJingles has said the he is guilty of this bad kind of metagaming. He has not said that he is cheating. His style of strategy of trusting players based on previous games is not one I would choose, but I don't think it is out of bounds. He can play the game however he sees fit, like any other player, just do,long as he does not cross the line.

A Message on Self-Moderation
I would like to remind people that self-moderation is not the same thing as no moderation. You are responsible for the content you post here. Please keep in mind that this is a site for Diplomacy and we would like to attract new members and keep veterans. Recently, there has been a lot of bile on Forum and we don't like it. So, please, consider what you post. It would be a shame if we started losing members. It would be more of a shame if we were forced to actually moderate the Forum.
