Etiquette / Introducing a friend / playing in the same game
How do you handle the minefield of introducing your mates to the world of Diplomacy whilst staying within the rules? Are there any guidelines that mods / experienced players can offer on this?

Snow Storm
How did people fair in the snow storm? We lost power for about 24 hours. Roads are still pretty cluttered with trees and most of the surrounding towns (that don't get power from the University) are still out of power.

To Boldly Go Where No Game Has Gone Before...STAR TREK DIPLOMACY!
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=71175
The powers are listed below...45 point buy-in (as Trek's existed for 45 years, 1966-2011) and you play as the race you have (Human, Vulcan, Romulan, Cardassian, Borg, Bajoran, and, oc course, Klingon.)

Revenge is a dish best served cold...and it is VERY cold in space...! ;)

Cancelling the Masters
Unless someone has talked to TrustMe or compiled a list on their own and knows what's needed, I plan on cancelling any paused Masters game this Thursday. I'm not really willing to reverse engineer each game to figure out what he was planning. It's been left in the fridge too long, time to throw it out.

It's easy to win PPSC.
Easy, Draugnar? Really?
The Czech (41800 D(S))
30 Oct 11 UTC
Really, PPSC is easier. The same desire to stop the leader isn't there.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
Exactly. Once you are down to 4 players, the biggest will likely win because second place will be happy to let him win as long as he keeps growing.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
It is. I have had almost twice the solos in PPSC. I often find you can offer a smaller power second if you are the leader and that is all it takes to win.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
In other words, getting big early isn't detrimental in PPSC because number two and soemtimes number three is there to help.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
and i must say, ive never seen iceland yellow before. If only youed got iceland too!
But don't call it easy, you;re still playing 6 other people. If it was easy why haven't you all won more games?
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
Because I don't play PPSC.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
I play the *real* game, that which is closest to the board game. Non-Anon WTA.
Right, but that still doesn't refute my point that it is not easy.

I find PPSC games harder for exactly the reasons you all call it easier.

Because people forget to think dynamically and they just stick to known alliances. You try something creative and people shout stabber and thats your game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
OK, so easier in some respects and harder in others.

If you are the big guy early (and I either go big or go home) then the end game becomes easier to pull off the victory. If you are the little guy, then it is harder to get the tools who are only interested in the points to stop the solo.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
I'm sure Draug is right that it is easIER to outright solo in PPSC, for the reasons he's already stated. Still, something has to give in that tradeoff, and that something is that it's more difficult to draw. Really, this WTA attitude applied to PPSC grates on me - they are two different games, with different goals (or should I say, one of them has more room for secondary goals if a player feels he is unlikely to win).

To me this opens up more avenues for diplomacy once you're out front than WTA, which is, why I suspect, WTA players don't like it: they feel that a leading power should have LESS options, not more. I understand and respect that, but as I've mentioned before, the attitude doesn't apply in PPSC.

Still, I agree with the sentiment that a win in PPSC is "less difficult/valuable/remarkable," than a WTA win, but since the point system reflects that (and GR too: since draws are fewer the zero-sum is preserve, right?) so there is really no problem.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
Agreed, YJ, but the point is, your bragging about the magnitude of impressiveness (is that a word) is ripe for derision due to the greatly reduced value of a win in PPSC compared to WTA. You have 3 PPSC wins and two survives, IIRC. Had these been WTA, you could brag, but bragging about the watered down PPSC wins... It's bad enough you are tooting your own horn, but you are doing so about something as unimpressive as PPSC wins. I just had to bust your chops. :-)
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
Haha I've been ranting on like that since I came here though, lol c'mon Draug all the other vets have gotten used to it by now (note the marked lack of, "STFU YJ you aren't that good in fact you suck" compared to some of my earlier posts).

Just going to point out that there are plenty of people with a win/draw ratio better then 60% yellow. And those people don't only play in games with players they feel comfortable playing against.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
True, but how many are there with a win ratio of 60 % and no defeats? Don't try to make the stats sound worse than they are. There's plenty of room for criticism of my play based on fact, no need to pull out garbage like that.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
Oh, and the "people I feel comfortable with" have handed me my only two survives, so yeah, again....
Scmoo472 (1933 D)

Yellow, you said it was flawless. Your stab was really bad. Any player truly wanting to be flawless, would have capitalized on Russia much sooner than you did, you just need to be creative in your reasoning. If you're up for it, I'd love to have a game with you. PPSC if you'd like.
spyman (424 D(G))

Congrats Yellojacket. It is such a good feeling winning. There was a time once when I used to win the occasional game, now the best I can manage is a draw. Sometimes I feel like I'll never win a game again. How the hell does anyone win this game against strong oppponents?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
Yes, Scmoo, a stab resulting in an uncontested win is just *terrible* Now, ignoring that obvious load of horse hockey, I'll move forward with the knowledge that you are a far more experienced player who probably knows many tactics and techniques that I don't.

My line of thinking in delaying as long as I did was as follows: Russia was no real danger to me as he was totally absorbed in the north, and in a position with England that makes it very difficult for either of them to advance and become a threat to me. This frees me up to swallow Italy then France at my leisure. Meanwhile I remained well positioned to make him bleed if I felt he was about to change his mind and look south. So allow me to learn at the feet of the master: in what season would you have done it, and why?

lol spyman you'll get back there mate... just study my moves and learn what you can.

1. It wasn't a load of horse hockey? I never said it was terrible. I just said it was bad, as in not executed as well as it could have. If you notice, the year? earlier you had positioning on Rumania, which would have allowed a move into Budapest for the triple build, giving you an army in Con, an army in Smyrna, and fleet in Ankara. That giving you positioning on Sev, Rum, and Vienna exactly 1 more earlier, and there would have not been anything he could have done to stop it. I'll just give you the credit for the win, as you did earn it. And you never answered me.

Do you want to get a game going, I'd love to play against you.
Diplomat33 (243 D(B))
31 Oct 11 UTC
yes. the stronger the players you play the less wins you get.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

jmo: I thought you were good at picking up sarcasm :P ... guess not.

Scmoo: maybe you're right. More foresight could have finished it off a season sooner. But that's why I'm not ready to play you yet :) don't worry, I'll be happy to hand you (slowly) when the time comes.

Jacob: thanks man.

@YJ - Set up a passworded game and I'll play as long as it's full press. I prefer non-anon WTA but will play anon and/or PPSC if we must.

Jesus=Socialist?
Someone I happen to see nearly everyday insists that Jesus was a socialist and/or advocated the philosophical and moral grounds/justifications for instituting socialism. I oppose socialism, but am not particularly religious, and thus not really angered by this statement; nevertheless, many Christians I know have been angered by this claim. Discussion/debate?

Six of the Best
Politicians get a lot of bad press in the modern age, and sadly a lot of it is deserved. The vast majority can be safely ignored without any risk of missing anything remotely interesting or useful to our lives. But in the sea of mediocrity float a few stars, a small number of voices that are worth noting. My question is: which politicians still have the power to make you stop and listen? Lets see a list of six of your best!

Someone not unpausing a game
Ok so i am in a game currently that has been paused for about 3 weeks now. We as a group decided to pause it for one of the players playing was needed elsewhere in life. however, now we are wanting to unpause it and get the game moving, however our persia is not unpausing it. i believe it may be because he is losing....i am not sure how to proceed with this because it is my belief he will not unpause the game. What should we do about this game?
