How do you handle the minefield of introducing your mates to the world of Diplomacy whilst staying within the rules? Are there any guidelines that mods / experienced players can offer on this?

Snow Storm
How did people fair in the snow storm? We lost power for about 24 hours. Roads are still pretty cluttered with trees and most of the surrounding towns (that don't get power from the University) are still out of power.

Cancelling the Masters
Unless someone has talked to TrustMe or compiled a list on their own and knows what's needed, I plan on cancelling any paused Masters game this Thursday. I'm not really willing to reverse engineer each game to figure out what he was planning. It's been left in the fridge too long, time to throw it out.

Jesus=Socialist?
Someone I happen to see nearly everyday insists that Jesus was a socialist and/or advocated the philosophical and moral grounds/justifications for instituting socialism. I oppose socialism, but am not particularly religious, and thus not really angered by this statement; nevertheless, many Christians I know have been angered by this claim. Discussion/debate?

Just a little update: 11 rockets were fired from the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip in the last 24 hours. The cities that were targetted are Ashdod (210k civilians), Be'er Sheva (200k civilians) and Ashkelon (115k civilians, my family and parents among them).
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Conclusion, the blockade and control over gaza has not prevented rockets being fired.

Present policy in the region has bred hatred in the Palestinian territories, and your family and parents have been endangered.

This will continue to happen so long as policy remains the same.

Nice conclusion.

Blockade = missiles on Ashdod, Ashkelon and Be'er Sheva.
No blockade = suicide bombers in Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Great choices, eh?

What do you think the Israeli policy should be?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
30 Oct 11 UTC
why do you think i know how Israel should make policy?

I have no international relations experience other than playing diplomacy, and i hardly think that gives me the right to lecture anyone.

A approach needs to be found. Continuing the current failed policies will lead to continued attacks, as you have pointed out.

Allright then. A little statistics lesson: correlation does not imply causation.
You assume that the blockade caused rocket fire. In order to check if this is correct, we need atleast to check what came first - rocket fire or blockade.

Gaza blockade: start date - June 2007 (Wikipedia).
Missiles on Israel: Sderot is an Israeli city near Gaza. Rocket fire from Gaza killed 13 Sderot civilians from 2001 to 2008. From mid-June 2007 to mid-February 2008, 771 rockets and 857 mortar bombs were fired at Sderot and the western Negev.
Here is a list of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel, from 2002 to 2006 (prior to blockade): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rocket_and_mortar_attacks_in_Israel_in_2001_through_2006

Conclusion: Blockade has not cause the missiles, since missiles were fired before the blockade.

I really suggest you read the following article for your general knowledge and understanding of the situation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockade_of_the_Gaza_Strip

A little quote from the article: "On 20 June 2010, Israel's Security Cabinet approved a new system governing the blockade that would allow practically all non-military or dual-use items to enter the Gaza strip."

Hmm... Maybe there is another reason why Hamas fires the rockets, except the blockade?

And another interesting piece of information: "The firing of Qassam rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel has been opposed by those living closest to the firing location due to Israeli military responses. On July 23, 2004 a family attempted to physically prevent the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades from setting up a Qassam rocket launcher outside their house. Members of the brigade shot one member of the family, an Arab boy, and wounded 5 others. In October 2010 five children and three women were injured after a Qassam rocket training site exploded near a crowded residential area of Tel As-Sultan in Rafah. Palestinian Center for Human Rights has condemned Hamas for storing explosive material near civilians. In August a similar explosion wounded 58 and destroyed seven houses." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qassam_rocket)

Claiming the blockades prevents suicide attacks is just as fallacious. The wall put a stop to suicide attacks.
Putin33 (111 D)

Orathaic could easily say that the blockade was implemented to prevent further rocket attacks, yet rocket attacks continue. Indeed your wiki article says the blockade was implemented for that purpose.

Israel has launched a fresh air strike on Gaza east of Rafah in which two people have been reportedly killed and another civilian injured, raising the Palestinian death toll to 11.

Sunday's raid came hours after the Islamic Jihad movement in Gaza said it had accepted a ceasefire agreement.

It's not two people, it's two terrorists who were firing the missiles.

And yes, it sounds very much like Islamic Jihad - fire 11 rockets and then declare a cease fire.
Baskineli (100 D(B))

Putin, the wall wasn't built around Gaza.

I just don't get it. The government in Gaza is firing rockets at Israeli cities, Israel shuts down the border with Gaza and answers the rocket strikes with air strikes, and somehow Israel is guilty of the situation?
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Oct 11 UTC
Please explain how suicide bombings in Haifa & Tel Aviv follow if you don't have a blockade. I realize the wall wasn't built around Gaza, which is why suicide bombings in Tel Aviv have nothing to do with the blockade.

'Allright then. A little statistics lesson: correlation does not imply causation.

no i don't.

I said, the blockade failed to prevent the rocket attack.

"It's not two people, it's two terrorists who were firing the missiles."

First, do you have evidence to prove this, or is it merely what you've heard reported in the media.

Second terrorists are people too.

That's like me saying it's ok to threaten your family because they are supporters of a terrorist state's military. They are paying taxes which supports the IDF who kill people and attempt to inspire terror in palestinians - retaliatory attacks hoping to quell further violence through FEAR of further retaliation.

I do not take this position, because no human life is disposable.

Six of the Best
Politicians get a lot of bad press in the modern age, and sadly a lot of it is deserved. The vast majority can be safely ignored without any risk of missing anything remotely interesting or useful to our lives. But in the sea of mediocrity float a few stars, a small number of voices that are worth noting. My question is: which politicians still have the power to make you stop and listen? Lets see a list of six of your best!

Here is the situation (actual positions and countries are different, but the situation is the same). If Germany's army in Ruhr supports its fleet from Holland to Belgium and England's fleet in North Sea supports its army from Belgium to Holland, what happens? It bounces, right?

Someone not unpausing a game
Ok so i am in a game currently that has been paused for about 3 weeks now. We as a group decided to pause it for one of the players playing was needed elsewhere in life. however, now we are wanting to unpause it and get the game moving, however our persia is not unpausing it. i believe it may be because he is losing....i am not sure how to proceed with this because it is my belief he will not unpause the game. What should we do about this game?
