Advice a gaming computer build
It's been a while since I popped into webdiplomacy. I need some advice on a computer build, and I know quite a few people on this site are into gaming and might be able to steer me in the right direction.

The Celebrity Phone Hacking
I'm kind of happy of the response to this, ten years ago the victims would be blamed in the media, it seems the message that it's not the victim's fault that they were violated has come across strongly. I think that wouldn't have been the case just 10 years ago

If you could live anywhere in the world you wanted...
Free from familial or employment concerns, on an income of about $30-40,000 USD per year, where would it be and why?

@Thucydides

What does "such a place deserves to have more foreigners living there" mean? You mean you want to reward them with your presence? Or punish them?
spyman (424 D(G))

You would find it hard to pay your rent in Australia on that kind of income. But maybe somewhere like Vietnam you could enjoy a decent lifestyle with that kind of money. I certainly would love to not have to work. I would start playing diplomacy again for one thing.
Putin33 (111 D)

I assume since he spoke highly of it he means he would like more foreigners to visit.
Putin33 (111 D)

My goodness, the cost of living where some people live must be astronomical if 40K can't cut it. What on earth is the average rent in Australia that 40K is not enough to live on?
tendmote (100 D(B))
04 Sep 14 UTC
"You deserve to have us visit" is a weird sentiment. I wonder what the reaction would be if that were expressed directly to the hosts.

I pay $550 a week for a small two bedroom apartment. The cost of living in Australia is much more expensive than the US. The median house price in Melbourne is $658,000.
spyman (424 D(G))
04 Sep 14 UTC
Putin, you could live on $40K but not that comfortably. Still I guess you could get used to it. When I was younger I was pretty poor and I still had a good time.

"I pay $550 a week for a small two bedroom apartment"

That's nuts.

Australia seems like a land rich country. Why is rent so expensive?

I was in Sydney a few months ago and pocket expenses were generally double what they are in the U.S. I didn't buy any groceries so I don't know if that's also more expensive.

"Why is rent so expensive?"

Have you seen Australia?

No I haven't.
spyman (424 D(G))

"Australia seems like a land rich country. Why is rent so expensive? "

I think it is because Australia is rich from the mining boom. People in the mining industries make huge money, for example tradesmen can make $150K to $200K + working on the mines.

Plus some say we have a housing bubble. Australian's love to invest in real estate (foreign investors love investing in Australian real estate too).
Putin33 (111 D)
04 Sep 14 UTC
It is a curiosity because I met a great number of tourists from Australia while living in China. The single biggest foreign group, I think. If rent is so high I can't imagine how so many are able to travel so much.
spyman (424 D(G))
04 Sep 14 UTC
Salaries in Australia are quite high. For example what you would consider to be minimum wage job in the states will pay $20 an hour here.

Lots of money = high prices.
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))

The rent is too damn high!
spyman (424 D(G))

" I think. If rent is so high I can't imagine how so many are able to travel so much. "

Because when we go to Asia with the currency conversion we are rich. It is cheaper to holiday in Thailand and Bali than Australia.

Good lord spyman, why do you pay that much?
tendmote (100 D(B))
04 Sep 14 UTC
Correct me if I'm wrong, but every property in Australia is mortgaged up to the eyeballs as far as I know. The Australian response to the property bubble is, and has been, keep pumping.
spyman (424 D(G))
04 Sep 14 UTC
bo_sox48 because that is what it costs. The suburb I live in is a bit more expensive that average too. I could pay less if I moved further out. But St Kilda is funky bayside subrurb and I can walk to work.

Yes Australian's are mortgaged up to the eyeballs. It is crazy. If the Chinese economy ever tanks we could be in some trouble (China buys a lot of resources from Australia - the rise of China is the reason the Australian economy has been so strong).
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
04 Sep 14 UTC
It's also the only reason Tony Abbott is in power, so let's just say I'm rooting for the collapse of the Chinese economy. No offense.

Russia is being overly aggressive in a live game
I'm playing as Ukraine in a live game, and Russia just messaged on global that if anyone helps me, they will use nukes. Nukes! What can I do?? He's already taken Crimea! Germany isn't talking to me. England is being friendly but they're not doing anything to help me. Oh and France just built a fleet in Marseilles. I think they're sending it against me! Ugh! Help!

When 2,000 people die due to government incompetence...
Why does no one care? It has been 9 years now since Hurricane Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans due to atrocious management of the Mississippi Delta by the Corps of Engineers, and no one has been held accountable aside from one sacrificial political appointee who was allowed to retire gracefully. Why? http://www.hulu.com/watch/394996

NFL Pick 'em: Pre-Week 1 Prediction Edition!
Week 1 of the 2014-15 NFL Season kicks off on Thursday with the Packers looking to get revenge for the Fail Mary vs. the *grrr* defending Super Bowl Champion Seahawks. We'll do the proper Pick 'em when that gets closer, but since we usually do playoff picks before that...this is that. So--your 6 playoff picks in both the AFC and NFC, winners in the Wild Card, Divisional, and Conference Championship rounds, and then, the Super Bowl winner...PICK 'EM! ;)

The Goose Public Press Series
Hi all, as you may know, I've always been a huge fan of public press games. I was hoping to get a 7 game series started where you play public press as each country. Non-anon. 48 hour phase 10 point buy-in. If you think you have what it takes to send subliminal messages to your neighbors, post below.
