Advice a gaming computer build
It's been a while since I popped into webdiplomacy. I need some advice on a computer build, and I know quite a few people on this site are into gaming and might be able to steer me in the right direction.

The Celebrity Phone Hacking
I'm kind of happy of the response to this, ten years ago the victims would be blamed in the media, it seems the message that it's not the victim's fault that they were violated has come across strongly. I think that wouldn't have been the case just 10 years ago

Russia is being overly aggressive in a live game
I'm playing as Ukraine in a live game, and Russia just messaged on global that if anyone helps me, they will use nukes. Nukes! What can I do?? He's already taken Crimea! Germany isn't talking to me. England is being friendly but they're not doing anything to help me. Oh and France just built a fleet in Marseilles. I think they're sending it against me! Ugh! Help!

Diplomacy Play Style Quiz
I'm working on a play style quiz and could use help in finishing it. I posted it on playdip.com and only received 2 responses to the survey, although they were helpful. Here's how you can help:

Two other small pieces of feedback:
1. I don't think question 3 is a good indicator of play style. With the other questions about openings, there are multiple options of various amounts of risk and possible reward, depending on what other players do. However, question 3 is a scenario that comes up fairly often and, barring a rare confluence of moves by England and France, has an objectively "better" set of moves.

2. It might help to shuffle the choices.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

@yonni: personality in terms of risk players are willing to take. As I said, I'd love to incorporate some press into it.

@peterwiggin: part of what I'm asking from you all is your opinion on the moves, ordering, additional options, etc. I've already had some people suggest alternate moves that I like. This is a trial run to collect opinions from players I respect and gather data.

Also, Tru, really like the premise of this survey and based on your last stats thing I'm pretty excited to see how it turns out.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
29 Aug 14 UTC
At first glance, there's no correlation. I'm going to have to compare the data by question. There's still a very limited number of responses, so small sample sizes can throw results off, and most of those surveyed are veteran players, so there's a bias there (a bias I don't mind seeing since it's nice to hear from the vets)
Yonni (136 D(S))
29 Aug 14 UTC
I think the results could be interesting regardless if there's a correlation between skill level (perhaps try GR too?).

There could be some questions about how the players self-identify (e.g. carebear vs. cutthroat, cutting an ally out of a draw, GB vs. FP, etc.) and see players can be generalized that way. Of course, a larger response would help.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
29 Aug 14 UTC
4 more to go before I post responses. I will still continue to collect additional responses for my pool as well as additional suggestions.
Working backwards, if one assumes that the posted results will influence noobs and other impressionable types, isn't it desirable to manipulate the posted results by entering false answers? Just wondering.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
30 Aug 14 UTC
Lol. Sooooo true. BTW, most people with a win % of higher than 20 answered to defer both builds as Russia in question 10, so if we play together, you might consider deferring 2 builds anytime you play as Russia.

3 to go. Interesting stuff. Curious about the deferred builds. I figure with 8 SCs, you have a target on you regardless and with fewer, you have a target and too few units to defend. But then again, my solo % is only 16%, mostly because of gunboat these days....

jmo1121109 (3812 D)

I answered Tru, I'll admit, some of them are with press slightly considered knowing what I'd be able to do with the given situations.

I think a great question would be to find a game where a stab would have been possible, or did happen in a situation where Russia and Turkey where both expanding west rapidly. One where they are well split on the North/South stalemate line, where there where 1 or 2 opportunities to stab that would have ended in a solo but didn't happen. I'd be curious in how many people would take that stab shot or how many would be able to see the opportunity. What I've noticed recently is that many players draw percentage seems low, and looking over the game it isn't for lack of solo opportunity, people just aren't taking the opening in time, they are waiting an extra turn to be cautious and by then it's too late.

Hopefully I explained that well enough. I might try and find a game that shows what I mean for you to have a good example.

I know exactly what you mean! If you find one, let me know.

I'm sitting at a total of 19 responses. The average win% among those 19 individuals is 16.4% and the average draw% is 38.5%. This verifies that the average player taking the quiz is considered a player with above average skill. Here are the results of my initial inquiry:

At first glance there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of agreement from our players of above average skill...
uclabb (589 D)

I also said to move to Tyolia- there were quite a few where I thought that the best answer was missing- I think that my answers became the second row in that list, but very much I think the correct answers to 1 and 6 at least are none of the above.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Sep 14 UTC
No, not so much Octavious. What that tells me is that more than one play style can be particularly effective in given situations, and I think that shows how different personalities can still play effectively and also why many of those varying personalities tend to clash in press scenarios.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
03 Sep 14 UTC
At face value, I tend to agree with bo. As I get time, I will try to look for patterns on more of a micro scale. For example, among those that answered A for questions 1 and 4, etc. it will be difficult given that I haven't heard much from the voice of those with combined win/draw percentages below 30%.
Octavious (2732 D)
03 Sep 14 UTC
Perhaps... It could mean that the crucial information for deciding what actions to take come predominantly from subtleties in press and the development of relationships with other players.

Or it could mean that most of the time where you actually move doesn't matter a great deal :p

NFL Pick 'em: Pre-Week 1 Prediction Edition!
Week 1 of the 2014-15 NFL Season kicks off on Thursday with the Packers looking to get revenge for the Fail Mary vs. the *grrr* defending Super Bowl Champion Seahawks. We'll do the proper Pick 'em when that gets closer, but since we usually do playoff picks before that...this is that. So--your 6 playoff picks in both the AFC and NFC, winners in the Wild Card, Divisional, and Conference Championship rounds, and then, the Super Bowl winner...PICK 'EM! ;)
