Kazakhstan on the Modern II Map
Er. The Caspian Sea works as an ocean spot, correct? And Kazakhstan is adjacent to it.
Why can't I convoy to Kazakhstan then? I can convoy to Caucasus, Volga, etc. but not Kazakhstan. Even with a fleet in the Caspian, moving an army from Iran to Kazakhstan works without asking for "via land" or "via convoy".

Is this a known error/glitch/bug?

The Great Pot Debate
No, not another de-criminalisation thread.
Just a suggestion that, for replacement players, the contribution of points to the 'pot' should be abated by the amount of the defaulting player's initial contribution. So, with an original bet size of, say, 40, a 6-SC power would cost just 24 to take over, while a 3-SC power would cost nothing.
This would provide an incentive for substitutes to come forward.

Cheating?? Why?
Can someone explain to me, why people cheat. If you cheat and win, did you really win? If your accomplishment is not on your own merits, what did you accomplish? This game is a great learning vehicle, what reward is there for cheating?

I don't generally participate in the forum, but...
I just noticed that I've spent the last two months on the overall top-100 GR list. I joined about a year-and-a-half ago, so it's taken a while (I only play full-press games, usually with long phases), but it's pretty sweet.

Congratulations, me.

top 100 of WebDip? Pretty nice.

Mayby its time you thought about graduating to playdiplomacy or vdip for some heartier competition.

You know, one of those sites that didn't make Bo a mod.

"It is a nice feeling when you break the top 100 GR."
It's even nicer when you do it without farming it off of noobs.

zultar (4180 DMod(P))

Nah, you're a pretty good player when you play real competition. I just find the noob farming odd.
Ogion (3817 D)
29 Aug 14 UTC
Sounds to me like Ghug doesn't understand how GR calculations work. I played PlayDip. NMRs all the time and an absolutely crap interface and the most god awful garish color scheme. The one here is bad enough, but somehow those guys managed to make it worse
ghug (5068 D(B))
29 Aug 14 UTC
I do understand how GR calculations work. Zultar's a good enough player to beat noobs an inordinate percentage of the time, and thus he can quickly increase his GR by beating up on them repeatedly.

jmo1121109 (3812 D)

@Ogion, Ghug is right. Zultar and I have both taken over significant number of games. Since when you're a mod you rarely have time to play through an entire game. I personally enjoy taking over moderate position games 6-9 centers and playing them through as a gunboat, where I engage in limited or no communication. Don't ask me why, it's just entertaining for me. I normally win when I take over a game with mostly noobs, which skyrocketed my GR. It was not my intention, but it was a side effect of my style of play. However once you get high enough playing against only noobs stops advancing you, somewhere around the 100 mark from what I've noticed. From there you have to beat solid players to make further jumps.

Congrats MH! I used to be in the top 100 but inflation bumped me out :(

Ogion (3817 D)

The number of point you get in an Elo system declines sharply when you beat opponents you are ranked a lot higher then. In effect since the expectation for an expert playing noobs is that the expert wins a high proportion of the time, the term (result - expectation) is correspondingly low for a win, but large for a loss. On average, an accurately ranked expert player will not see upward movement from playing a lot of games against noobs because the upside is small and the downside is large. This means you can boost your ranking in your ranking is inaccurately low, but once you have played enough that your ranking is relatively accurate then playing noobs won't help you ranking much and might even hurt it. That is precisely how the Elo rankin scheme is supposed to work. Murraysheroes hasn't played a lot of games so the GR is still converging on his "true" ranking
DuffMcWhalen (0 DX)
29 Aug 14 UTC
I do wonder what one's GR would be if one simply played reasonable moves and did not ever NMR.
ghug (5068 D(B))
29 Aug 14 UTC
Yes. The thing about diplomacy noobs, however, is that they often have next to no understanding of the game, and you're still gaining a somewhat significant amount of GR points when you beat them, regardless of your own ranking, so by mercilessly and repeatedly destroying them, you can raise your GR past your true level.

Zultar's probably a top-100 player anyway. I was just jumping on an opportunity to make fun of him, because that's what I do.
Congrats murraysheroes!

@ ssoorreenn: "I have no vendetta against you, you don't make my radar ever, your [sic] not worthy."

Right. Despite the fact that you join threads specifically to hurl foul abuse at me. It must be fun living in your fantasy world. Given how much abuse you personally direct at me, at every possible opportunity, when I'm not even on your radar, I'd hate to think how much you'd give me when you *noticed* me, you cunt.

@Jamiet,
You and ssorenn are derailing this thread. Please stop. Also given your stance on language use and forum decorum, I find it a bit hypocritical that you are cursing ssorenn out, particular using language that you yourself have condemned in the past.

I make a special case for ssorenn specifically based on the way he pursues me around the forum. If you can find a single case of a thread where I attacked him, out of nowhere, *before* he poured foul abuse on me, I'll apologise. Otherwise all I am doing is to defend myself.

My complaint has never been about language, per se.

Curious - is it now a violation of site rules to "derail a thread"? Because I can't recall ever seeing a thread that stayed on topic forever. Good lord...

JMO - Excuse me, sir, was there a site rule violation in my question? I just find it odd that someone was called out for breaking from the OP, and I'm trying to figure out the rules. Are you a testy little boy...

Mahmoud Abbas: Hamas to Blame for the Prolongation of the War
http://news.yahoo.com/palestinian-leader-hamas-caused-prolonged-war-142407698.html ""It was possible for us to avoid all of that, 2,000 martyrs, 10,000 injured, 50,000 houses (destroyed)," Abbas told Palestine TV in remarks broadcast Friday. He said Hamas had insisted on discussing demands first before ending the war, which only served to prolong the violence needlessly." 1. How "unified" is a Palestinian govt. that blames its own and 2. When their leader *himself* blames Hamas...
