mental illness or evil?
Should psychopaths be treated as criminals (department of justice) or a patients (Department of Health) ?

referencing this article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15386740

I say as criminals. It may be true that they act as they do because of deficiencies in their brain. That simply means that such a deficiency in their brain makes them more likely to act in an evil way (and not to understand it), however, not that the action is not evil. All of us are born to some extent wanting to do bad things. These people obviously have a very regrettable super-predilection.

In the article, note the following line:

"According to Dr Kiehl, it is part of a pattern of brain activity which proves that psychopaths simply lack an emotional ability, in much the same way others lack intellectual ability. "

Importantly, he does NOT lack intellectual ability. Doubtless he has enough to understand such propositions as, "Society holds murder and rape to be very wrong and will aggressively punish infractions." Indeed, even if "wrong" appears to him as an undefinable and mystifying concept, the latter should be all he needs to know.

my opinion:
if you are bad=prison
if you are sick=hospital

I think orathaic's article somewhat challenges the idea of a bright line between the two, taos.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

agreed, and how we treat people should be informed by good science being done. The science in question does not however decide for us, it should be something we as communities try to understand and address.
taos (281 D)

i understood the article very well
what i am saying is that if the cause of the crime is a mental illness then the punishment is not efective
we must not forget that every prisioner costs alot of money to the goverment and maybe more then the value of his actions(i am not talking about sentimental damage)
if the man not only doesnt change his behavior and also gets more mental isues becouse of his exposure to "other criminals" so he can run his time and get out of prision "uncured" and make more damage to society.
treatment at the psiquitric hospital not only can be cheaper it is also does not depent on judges, lawyers, and other imperfect parts of the sistem.
his liberation has no deadline and it only depends on cience and doctors wich only interes of making him sane(as posible)and not risk the society or the pacient.

The bible preaches that mental afflictions are caused by love of Satan. Put them all down.

I know it is a simplistic view point, but if the illness is treateable and the person can return to a somewhat normal life amongst the general population, then treat them. But if they are just true psychopaths and would be locked up forever based on current medical science, just lock their asses away in a prison.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Nov 11 UTC
how about some early intervention to help them not develop into psychopaths in the first place?

or does this not also have it's own problems with the power you hand to scientists who as of yet don't know precisely what they are doing??
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Nov 11 UTC
Most psychopaths are described as "He was such a nive boy. Never caused any trouble. Quiet. Did his own thing. Was really polite. You'd never think he was storing the skulls of his victims in his freezer." How do you catch and change that path? Do you put every quiet kid in psochotherapy? If so, I would have been one of them when I was young and shy.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Nov 11 UTC
those are some clichés, and i don't know that our understanding is particularly well developed at the present time, but i think social behaviour and testing or this could be a part of all education.
Octavious (2701 D)
15 Nov 11 UTC
Whether they are ill or not ultimately doesn't matter. I can think of no punishment more cruel and inhumane than "curing" someone who has committed this kind of crime so they can experience the full horror of what they have done. Lock them in prison for the rest of their lives. It is the more merciful option by far.
Sicarius (673 D)
15 Nov 11 UTC
Both and neither.
they should be treated as people, as individuals. No two people are alike, no two situations are alike.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Nov 11 UTC
lots of situations are like other situations, in some cases the brain chemistry and structures may also be similar

i might note that juries have accepted temporary insanity by way of hormone imbalance due to : 1) brain tumour 2) menstrual cycle 3) addiction to junk food and 4) injecting steroids

to acquit individuals of their responsibility for murder.

If there is a kind of brain which can be considered sick, perhaps permanently, then would that lead to such a defence anyone who has certain brain abnormalities (now detectable by the magiks of fMRI)

alas the cost of fMRI-ing every person in the world is probably prohibitive at the moment (it's the liquid helium cooling mechanism, as i understand it)
Octavious (2701 D)
16 Nov 11 UTC
If given the choice between the possibility of living amongst undetected psychopaths or having everyone scanned for what is considered to be abnormal brains, I think I'd take my chances with the psychopaths! The road that brain scanning will take us down is truly terrifying.
semck83 (229 D(B))

Hear hear, Octavious.

"alas the cost of fMRI-ing every person in the world is probably prohibitive at the moment "

Almost every fMRI study I've ever read betrays terrible logic and a near-complete ignorance of human nature. I shudder for the day we can afford what you suggest and allow the small-minded, ignorant generalizations that brain scientists and their followers engage in to define our views of each other.

before we can use fmri on everyone and fix every childs brain before he kill us all,why not to have a social worker for every neighbourhood ?
that way we can fix more problems before they hapen
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Nov 11 UTC
I think we should get brain scans done on principle, to assist in learning.

That is, if we had data on everyone, we could look at the averages, and where the extreme in the data co-related with extremes in behaviour.

I don't mean or using it to determine who should be punished before they commit a crime, but to actually do some interesting science on understanding the brain...

and why is it the job of social workers to looks out for communities, shouldn't people in a community be able to look out for themselves? Oh, i forgot a majority of the current population lives in urban environments and these cities tend to degrade the community support and restrictions of small towns and villages.

i wonder if you can avoid making it specialized work by rebuilding communities within urban areas... hmm.

J. Edgar
I saw J. Edgar yesterday and thought it was fairly fantastic. At the very least, I thought DiCaprio would be a shoe in Oscar nominee (or even winner). Reviews, on the other hand, were less positive. Anyone else seen it?

How do players come up with the games that they create. I for one enjoy using music references. For example, I am in 2 games that I have created. The first is BYOB (song by system of a down). The second is This Time We'll Blast It All to Hell (line from green days' f.o.d.)

Students: Be nice to your TAs
So, I stayed up all night grading exams and now I feel bad for some of the shit I gave my TAs when I was an undergrad. You think taking an exam is bad? Try taking the same exam 40 times without being able to make a mistake.

A Tale Told By An Idiot, Full of Sound And Fury, Signifying Nothing--"Anonymous?"
I'm seeing it with friends tommorow--wasn't, fought it for weeks, but yeah...it's illogical to say "They're forcing me to go," and yet, nevertheless, we all know the feeling of friends "forcing" others, bullshit or not...

Anyone seen it? Or wants to see it? Am I going to want to pour poison in Emmerich's ear and run him through after seeing it? ;)
