Help! Tips on Starting?
Tomorrow at school we are playing diplomacy as a class(not webdiplomacy, actual diplomacy) and everyone thinks that because I play webdiplomacy, that I am a big threat. Although I have made alliances, I do not know who will actually live up to that and I'm afraid that if I get targeted by everyone, I will lose and then I'll get a C for the grade. I'm playing as Austria-Hungry so does anyone have any tips on how I should start out?

Why is the game not progressing?
I am in a game, and all the players show up with the green 'ready' tick, but the deadline ticker is still counting down. Is this normal?

Anyone Need A Tutor? (Or Know Someone That Does? Or A Good Tutoring Site?)
I don't want to, but as the only thing I can do REALLY well is literature and theatre and philosophy and all that jazz, I'm trying to get a tutoring job now, along with applying to all the regular places, retail and restaurants and all that...trying to find some folks in my school, but I need to get going, and I could care less if it's online, if that be the preference...so does anyone know someone who needs an English tutor, or else know a site that's hiring (or anything?)

In the example game, it was clearly headed towards a 17/17 draw, or 18/16 strong second. Quitting there isn't as despicable as quitting in 1901 as Austria when Italy moves into Trieste. He saved himself and the other two players some time. Shades of gray. Now if it was a WTA game and he quit like that, that would be a major shame as there is always room to survive in a WTA game.

(Note, I didn't say it wasn't despicable, I said it wasn't AS despicable.)
Alderian (2425 D(S))

But I also agree that a quarter of his games is a huge number of games to CD in. Some might be forgivable, but it certainly seems he doesn't mind messing up the game for everyone else when things don't go his way.
Maniac (184 D(B))

@draugnar - whilst I haven't read the rules recently I can't remember the bit where it says that children/people with lives/surgens shouldn't play live games. Please provide a link and clause number if you know differently.

@trip and others - we need to relax a litle, so the guy has resigned 42 times, it's only a game afterall and for everyone who has been negatively affected by his resignations, somebody has probably been positively affected by his resignations. Also people resigning brings a realisism to the game, it is rumoured that some european powers didn't turn up for certain battles when they were supposed to.

We are all getting a bit carried away with how others 'should' play, in another thread some guy got hit by a car and was in a coma and his playmates wanted his doctor to hit the ready button so they could continue. Chill out guys.

@ maniac: that last case you brought up is rediculous. i would never go that far.

you can't relate this game to real life, but since you tried, i'd say that any power, european or not, that doesn't show up to, or quits 25% of his battles, doesn't get to continue not showing up or quitting. they die out, or become ruled.

no one is saying how he 'should' play, just that he shouldn't quit so much. cding isn't really a style of play.
Maniac you are way off base here. Diplomacy is for everyone. People should be able to decide what they can and can't commit to. If you've played a few lives games you'll know whether its something you can actually do. I have no problem with people who play one or two and CD not knowing how long it was going to take.

If someone happens to be a surgeon with a very demanding and unpredictable schedule, there are still games they can play (maybe 48 hours or something). If they are really into diplomacy they can play live on their days off. Obviously things do come up (I have some reisgns myself although a number were form when I was very new).

Now anyone who plays live games regularly knows Terry. I am not going to slander him terribly here, but lets just say that people in this thread are not exaggerating. 42 Resigns does not count the times he has CDed and his country hasn't survived. That would probably double it.
Maniac (184 D(B))
01 Mar 11 UTC
Whilst I'm no doctor, I have studied Terry's playing style and it is obvious to me that he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in most countries this is regarded as a disability and as we know discriminating against the disabled is abhorrant and has no place on this site. I think you should all apologise to Terry and try to make allowances for his disability.
Maniac (184 D(B))
01 Mar 11 UTC
@trip - i kid you not, at one stage we didn't know if the noob had survived the car wreck but the request was and I quote "can't the doctor or the probate judge or someone hit ready for the damn noob?"
At the risk of sounding like an intolerant asshole here, would you want to play Hockey with a person with no legs? No, because it defeats the purpose of the game.

Now, there is such a thing as sledge hockey to accommodate such people. So maybe terry should try playing against a simulator when he is bored. Or a 1v1 game on vdiplomacy where time commitments are shorter.
SacredDigits (102 D)

My experience has been the stark opposite of Maniac's story about the coma. Yesterday, I discovered my grandmother had died, and I need to leave town tomorrow for arrangements. I let all five games I was in know, and everyone has been really patient and cool about potentially pausing and/or drawing games. I even got two offers to sit.

I steadfastly disbelieve that anyone seriously asked for a doctor to press the ready button, unless they disbelieved the incident.

@ lando: ...or not at all.

@ maniac: that's despicable if true. much worse behavior the time you tried to use meta-gaming as a diplomatic tactic against me and explained it away as "It's not how you play that matters - it's winning that people remember". gameID=9292

don't worry, i don't hold a grudge, it was a long time ago and you were in dire straights, but i haven't forgotten either ;)

lol trip - i think you have proved my point; when i played you i was young and nieve, i wouldn't do that kind of thing now. I think Terry may develop into a reasonable player given the oppertunity. Btw - did you reallly remember that crass statement or did you just do some kind of search?

@all re:car accident and coma, in this thread:
http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=692463#692463

It was asked why someone would join a game and then not show up. I listed a number of reasons including "Or maybe they got hit by a car and are in a coma. Stuff happens." From there people were joking around and Maniac just carried it over into this thread.

There have been no confirmed cases of diplomacy newbs getting hit by a card and being put into a coma. There have been some cases of experienced players getting hit by cars or having bike accidents and them logging in to let us all know because they know what really matters. :p
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Can you believe I typed "card" in two places and only corrected one of them before hitting the Post reply button? Have at it.
I don't think terry is a kid. I think he is an adult.
The Situation (100 D)
01 Mar 11 UTC
I'm more inclined to believe that Terry indeed leaves for reasons that the general diplomacy population considers illlegitimate. He has had plenty of opportunity to defend himself, yet he has not yet spoken a single word. His last login time was very recent and he has to check the thread if he wishes to be aware of the result of his accusations.
frenchtourist (1218 D)

Terry has created 3 forums to publicly accuse me of metagaming, because he was victim of a 2 way draw.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
01 Mar 11 UTC
Maniac, I can't understand why you're defending this guy. CDing 42 times is unacceptable behaviour. End of.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
01 Mar 11 UTC
As rarely as I do so, I have to agree with Jamiet99uk...

No reason to call mods over that game, and that many CDs IS unacceptable...

23%--that's nearly 1/4 of his games!

In 100 games I've resigned ONCE, and THAT was my second game or so on the site and only because I joined the second game by accident and could barely keep one game straight starting out way back when...

23% is just poor form, and if it is because he ahs to go to bed, well, there are live games that run while I'm in college, but do I join, knowing in an hour and a half I'll need to go to class?

No.

Poor form making this thread to complain about what looks like a fair draw to just about all OBJECTIVE observers, and poorer form accusing of poor gaming when you CD about 1/4 of the time yourself.
gigantor (404 D)

Maniac is defending him because he thinks it's funny. Everyone needs to stop being so serious!

this thread is freaking hilarious. idk if i played any games with terry but i have nothing against him since i dont remember playing with him if i have. i do however remember seeing a long time ago when i had only played here for a week or so that terry had a decent amount of points and is now down to almost nothing most likely due to his resigning....by what everyone else is saying he sounds to me like peyton1 who is now spartans but theres always hope that they learn from their mistakes and try to fix these things.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Mar 11 UTC
@maniac - the rules don't say not to try to breath underwater without some type of breathing apparatus. So go ahead and try. It's common sense that if you expect you may be called away then you donIt play a live game. A surgeon preparing for mergncy surgerye
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Mar 11 UTC
Grrrrr...

A surgeon preparing for emergency surgery (your specific example) should not play live games. You twisted what I said into "surgeons shouldn't play" but your example was more specific. Epic fail from the mad one.
Maniac (184 D(B))
02 Mar 11 UTC
@Lando "At the risk of sounding like an intolerant asshole here, would you want to play Hockey with a person with no legs? No, because it defeats the purpose of the game" That's true to a point, but if we could accommodate someone's disability so that we could play together then wouldn't the world be a better place. Imagine if you had a son that wanted to play monopoly but he couldn't grip the dice firmly and so took a little more time to scoop them into a little pot that had been specially designed to allow him to grip it and this small thing alowed that wee guy to play at the table with his loved ones instead of licking the window in the porch. I can imagine the joy on that little kid's face now. Give terry a break, he is afterall someone's son.

I think you failed the first part of your quote btw "...At the risk of sounding like an intolerant asshole here,..."

@Draugnar - you're right

Statistics of Winning Nations from all Finished Games
Because I don't know all hidden places on this website -took ages until I found the rankinglist- I just want to know:
Are there statistics of winning nations from all finished games? It would be really interested to look into, maybe filtered by gunboat, normal, etc.

Do points = Clout?
Just a topic i was curious about. Since my return here to the site it seems that since i have over 100 D that my allies are more easily won by show of total games played/won/return on investment rather than the actual diplomacy aspect. I know that we are a easily persuaded race but what are your thoughts on the matter?

Hi guys, I don't know how it happened, but my clock somehow got delayed. I mean, in the game window, you see a timer before the next phase. Well... mine is 5 minutes BEFORE the real time. It's pretty annoying for the live games...

Newbie question on Ready and players who aren't there
I am in my first game, and we have a player who signed up but is not making any orders. So every time we all hit Ready we have to wait fot the full time. Is there a way to get rid of the player so we can go more quickly? And why do people sign up if they do not want to play?

Sorry if this is a silly question - I also could not find a way to search the forum to see if someone else had posted on the same thing. Is there a way I can do that?

Shameless, hopeless bragging.
So I know it's not really special, but I just played my first successful juggernaught (i.e., lasts longer than 1901) and what's more, it was in a gunboat. Those of you who have played against me know I am pretty average - and you can see that from this game, too - but I'm happy with this and had to let my pride out somewhere. gameID=51955 :)

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: The Root Of All Action (Evil? Obi Has A Theory!)
Well, I didn't want to do three faith/religion-centric Philosophy threads in a row, for those who are tired of it, take this one any way you want--is there a root of all human action, and if so, what is it, and what does this mean for ethics and morality in general? Is there a universal root, and thus a universal morality? Well, I don't know about MORALITY, but I DO ahve an idea as to the root...perhaps not an original idea, but anyway...

Convey through Balaeres in Ancient Med?
From http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/a/ancient_med.htm (the supposedly official variant site): "Since Baleares consists mostly of water, it is considered a sea space for the purposes of convoys, therefore a fleet occupying Baleares may be used to convoy an army using the normal convoy rules." However, in a game that I am currently playing, it appears that despite the presence of a bordering coastal army, I cannot order a convoy through Balaeres?
