Quality of play on different sites
Without turning this into a giant webDip ego stroke, how do you feel the quality of play at other sites stacks up to webDiplomacy? If you could include specific sites for comparison (just names, no links necessary) that'd be wonderful.

EOG statements for: I think we should call it your grave
Well I know this game never really got a proper conclusion I'd be interested in see your thought process and what you figured was happening in the game.

I took a chance by inviting you into the mainland, and I didn't have time enough to focus on what happened in the south-eastern corner during the opening game - not much I could have done different, but I would like to question a few french moves, particularly the spring 01 with par-bur but mar hold instead of supporting? and building two armies in 01 instead of at least one fleet to go south?

1901:

France: Now I've never been a huge fan of the F/E alliance and France was a best non-committal to anything in the first year preferring to see how the first couple of moves would play out. This resulted in my being less keen to speak with him particularly when accompanied by a much more talkative and receptive Germany.
By the end of the spring it was clear I would have to choose sides. Both agreed to give me Belgium. Which was fine since neither bordered it, and wanted me to help the one against the other.

Germany: Now the first things I said to Germany were proposing that we ally. As England I always want to try for an E/G alliance because it is so much harder for Germany to stab me then it is for the French. Coupled with a better attitude I was sure that me and him were going to get along great, and have a strong alliance for years to come.

Italy: Short blunt and not a lot of fun to talk to. I hate France. Rawr. I wasn't particularly keen on dealing with italy but I figured what the hell a three pronged attack on France will be really effective.

Russia: Russia was pretty quiet in the first turn. Messages were Brief and we agreed to co-habit Scandinavia. Unbeknownst to him I'd worked out a deal with Germany to have him bounce Russia in Sweden.

Turkey: It didn't start talking with Turkey until the Fall when I noticed he was moving on Russia with the aid of Austria. Who had been stabbed by italy? It was a screwed up south. But I figured hey I could offer him some help against Russia.

1902:
The game changes, I build Fleet Lon army Edi contrary to what France had asked me to do. With the intent of grabbing EC and helping Germany into Bur. France build Twin armies and Germany a fleet in Berlin and an army in Kiel.

Now up until this point I'd figured what I was planning was pretty good it would result in a strong alliance with Germany and a quick domination of the board. Problem was Germany obviously wanted Sweden, and with the Turkish hordes successful attacks on Russia in the first year I suspected that I needed a Russia with some units to slow down any opposition.

France: I apologized for building the way I had. Said I'd run out of time which was true. By the time I'd considered attacking Germany there had been six seconds left to change builds.

Russia: Desperate show of support for Russia offering him Sweden, and hoping he isn't just going to CD. Because I needed his help to counter Turkey.

Germany: Negotiations were going well and I don't think he suspected anything could be wrong. Told him he'd have support to Bur and I'd move to EC. He later sent me a message post stab saying or I could take advantage of the stupid french builds and throw the game to A/T

France: Told him that end of this year my bad builds would be vindicated and he'd see I was on his side. Which I was, Holland is taken, and Germany is going to have to Disband. France moves on Italy since he's being attacked.

Turkey: Seemed miffed that I was helping Russia and didn't believe he was a threat.

1903:

Post disbands Germany was falling apart my fleets were in position to rip land an army in Denmark. And France could make progress by land. It was a dark day in Germany.

Russia: Misinterprets my requests and suggestions and time and time again drives me crazy by allowing a Turkish advance on him. In both this year and 1904. Should he have followed my ideas he would have held Moscow built there and held a stalemate for Turkey as War, Moscow, Ukr. For quite some time. Suggested move to Sev isn't followed through on. Resulting in the situation where he ended up with Turkey is Warsaw.

Italy drops out. Discussion occurs on what should happen to the game. We agree after Italy is CD'd that we should draw.

1905:

Change in peoples minds, since Germany was going to have died regardless of the Italian CD we agree to eliminate him then Draw

Draw. Yet again a sad conclusion to a game that should have been Englands to win.

Not involved in the game, but I once again point out a difference in philosophy regarding CD's. A player with 34 D caused a game to end up as a draw...and that time to feel wasted.

My proposition is always that CD's are a fact of life. (Just had THREE players CD in a 1400 point pot game)). And therefore they should be played through. In this game, it would have meant that England and France would have needed to perhaps revive Germany to fight the south, as AH would gain strength. And perhaps working for a Turkish stab of AH. My point would be, shit happens, and adjusting strategy to adapt to the new landscape of a dead Italy is no different than adjusting strategy when the alliance next to you (or your alliance) falls apart.

Loved the EOG statement, can't wait to see what the others said.

You know, it's kind of amusing to think about, but Russia went CD in real life during WWI.

Unfortunately I don't think many of the games players frequent the forum. However if you have any questions for me or would like to know a little more about a given year I'm open to talk about it.

I'm glad you enjoyed the EOG statement. As you say, in general I agree with the notion of playing through most of the time. With exceptions being when a person couldn't win unless the other power CD'd but as you say they are a fact of life.

Should we have continued to play through my strategy probably wouldn't have shifted much initially. Get fleets to the Med. Wipe out Germany, and probably eliminate Russia since he was just about dead regardless and often made flawed moves I'd prefer to have my own more reliable troops up there.
