to expand on mine:
10. All My Loving
One of the best from their Beatlemania era, All My Loving epitomizes McCartney's lyric ability with beautifully crafted verses and a hook bridge
9. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Had Flown)
The song that marked the beginning of the growing sophistication in The Beatles's music, Norwegian Wood forayed into folk styling to add another string to the fab four's repertoire. But it was George Harrison's Sitar that would fully drive them to incorporate a wider range of instruments and genres in their expanding catalog.
8. Strawberry Fields Forever
Strawberry Fields Forever is a landmark in the history of music, defining pop music with its complexity and redubbs throughout the entire song. Using innovative recording techniques and technical editing and mixing, Strawberry Fields Forever is among one of the greatest songs of all time.
7. Come Together
A Lennon composition, Come Together features Lennon's tough lyrics with a low tempo and heavy bass riff to open the penultimate Beatles album, Abbey Road. A classic
6. Tomorrow Never Knows
The precursor to Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Revolver is considered by many Beatles diehards to be the defining album of the fab four. Tomorrow Never Knows is one of these reasons. Incorporating all elements of studio wizardry known at the time (and then some), Tomorrow Never Knows set the world on fire back when Revolver was released in 1966
5. Yesterday
The penultimate track on Help!, Yesterday is McCartney's baby. The most covered song of all time, Yesterday is arguably the greatest single in the history of popular music. The acoustic guitar and string quartet chill the soul as Paul sings about the most common, yet most revered themes in music-love.
4. Elanor Rigby
The very fact that a song about two doomed souls reached #1 is a testament to the commercial and critical spell that the world was under when The Beatles were king. The opposite to Yesterday, you could say, Elanor Rigby is about the morality and sadness of an empty world. dropping the guitar, McCartney sings with a string quartet in a song that improves on what makes Yesterday so great
3. Across the Universe
The black horse of the list, Across the Universe is pure genius. a haunting backing music with beautiful lyrics:
"Limitless undying love
It shines before me like a million suns
It calls me on and on"
Some may disagree with Across the Universe's greatness, but it is certainly, in my mind, one of The Beatles's greats
2. Hey Jude
The 7-minute long magnum opus that crashed into number 1 and stayed there for 9 weeks, Hey Jude is the greatest single released by The Beatles. Written by Paul McCartney to Julian Lennon during his parent's divorce, Hey Jude features beautiful lyrics and backing before the grand climax that resonates throughout the last 4 minutes of the song. One of the all-time greats.
1. A Day in The Life
A true Lennon/McCartney classic, A Day in The Life closes Sgt. Peppers with the grandeur it deserves. from the verses to the bridge and instrumentals, A Day in The Life is everything Beatles at their finest hour.
