Convoy Paradox
I know we've discussed this before, but this didn't adjudicate as I thought it should.

Since Ionian was not displaced, it was not truly a paradox, but shouldn't the convoy not have cut support?
Parallelopiped (691 D)

The convoy works and cuts support from Naples. What did you expect to happen?
rlumley (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Well in order to resolve the paradox, I thought the rule was that a convoy can not cut support from a territory supporting a move into the convoying fleet.
JesusPetry (258 D)

The Ionian was supported to hold anyway, so I guess there's no problem.

I suspect a graphical rather than a programming issue here.

@ Ghost:

From the orders log:

The fleet at Naples support move to Ionian Sea from Tunis. (fail)

@rlumley - first, why would you convoy a pair of ducks when they can fly over? Just curious.
Parallelopiped (691 D)
11 Jun 10 UTC
One of them has a sore wing and the other is keeping it company. The rest of the flock are flying over.
LanGaidin (1509 D)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Ok, that makes sense then; thanks for clarifying =)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 Jun 10 UTC
@rlum: Surely if no paradox is hit there is no need to break the convoy.
rlumley (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
There would be no difference if the support succeeded. I know that.

But shouldn't the support not have been cut in the first place?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Not if there wasn't a paradox.
It seems to me you're complaining that there wasn't a bug!
sqrg (304 D)

If you wanted the support not to be cut you shouldn't have supported Ion with Aeg :P
Or am i misinterpreting the rules now?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
11 Jun 10 UTC
sqrg, indeed, in that case support would not have been cut.

@rlumley, I don't think we can comment unless we see the event happen without that support. I will join a game to set it up, if you want to do the test. (we cancel the game after)
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
@RLumley - your quote from order si correct. The support failed because the convoying fleet was support held. The move became a bounce and there fore the support failed. It doesn't say the support was cut.
rlumley (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
I didn't necessarily want or not want the support to be cut. As you can see, I was playing for Trieste, not Naples. I ordered it more or less because I could. I wasn't going to move Ion, or Greece and I may as well have attempted a random convoy.

That being said, I also knew about the convoy paradox (and I'm walking the line here about talking about an ongoing game, but since it's public press, it doesn't really matter) and France had said he'd support the move to Ion. I kind of wanted to see the convoy paradox go down, even though I had been told that the paradox would resolve itself in Italy's favor, not mine.

I didn't think a convoyed army could ever cut the support of a fleet attacking one of it's fleets though. I thought that was how the game master adjudicated orders to avoid the paradox. So when the convoy cut support, I was confused.
rlumley (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
For the last time. I understand what happened, why it happened, and that the support made no difference because I support held.

I'm saying that, by my understanding, the support shouldn't have been cut and it should have been 2v2 instead of 1v2. But yes, I know that in either case, it bounces.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
It said the support failed, not was cut. Are you sure it *was* cut?
Parallelopiped (691 D)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Interesting case. Under the original rules there is no paradox and the support is cut but under the fix to rid the game of paradox the absence of paradox is irrelevant and the support should not be cut (not sure how support can "fail" if it isn't cut)
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Page 16 of the 2000 4th Edition Rules makes it sound like the convoy not cutting support only applies to resolve the paradox. As there was no paradox, the support should get cut."Since both rules are contradictory, the above new rule takes precedence." In other words, it only applies if there is a paradox happening...
rlumley (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Well the only way support could fail without being cut would be if the unit didn't move to the destination for which the support was intended.
rlumley (0 DX)
11 Jun 10 UTC
Fair enough Draugnar. I guess that answers my question.

Thanks.

Under the 1982 rule, the support would not be cut. However, this site uses the 2000 rule with the Szykman rule as further refinement. The 2000/Szykman rule only kicks in, when there is a paradox (so, not in this case). While, the 1982 rule is not dependent on that. This is also directly the disadvantage of the 1982 rule. It has also effect when there is no paradox.

Retreating to ENEMY sc's
This rule is extremely stupid. An enemy army retreating in disarray has no chance in hell of taking a fortified city.

Not to mention it makes me want to stab someone.

I'm not saying people are cheating, but could anyone comment on how strange Rome and Egypt are acting in this game? Miss a turn, come back, miss a turn, come back, all the while leaving themselves defenseless against Persia.
