What kind of site to create?
I'm going to create a site for school, and ideally it's about something useful, ideally even potentially profitable, or at least breaking me even if I decide to actually get it hosted. Any idea's on what to make it about? Anyone wants a site made by me maybe? I'm just clueless.

@y2k - The site design is excellent and it is obvious what the purpose is (you have a link right at the top of what the site is about) but you need to be careful of running afoul of state laws. For instance, in Ohio, you cannot charge the card in full unless you have the product on hand or believe in good faith that your supplier does for drop shipments and then if the provider doesn't you have to be willing to refund the money.

Now you can vet an approval code for the amount and not send through the actual charge to deserve or you can take a reasonable downpayment, but considering you don't ship until enough orders have come in and it gets manufactured, you can't charge and receive money for the full amount of the purchase price. There are some exceptions on customized items, (like cars ordered with features the new owner specifically wants) but then you have to provide an expected delivery date.

But I thought the design was great. Even on my Windows Phone 8 Lumia.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I don't know what "to deserve" was supposed to be but I meant "until you are ready to ship".

Steephie - You need to stop thinking you can take a few grand and male enough to love off it without risk. You also need to stop viewing everything as a potential profit center. Sometimes, losing money is the cost of doing *good* business. It builds up trust with the community and word of mouth to do charitable websites and such for no compensation and, in the end, your reputation as a good socially aware company drives more business your way.

Make enough to live... Fat finger those far right letters a lot.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Draugnar: I know. And I think of money as a way to make a deal if it can't be done fairly without, and also as a way to see if it's really valuable to you; if you tell me you really need a site but won't give a buck for it while you have enough, I know enough...

It's also simply a thing of supply and demand. If more people demand the same thing and both causes are equally just, it's only fair to serve the one who pays the most first.

To give a practical example, on my school a lot of people used to borrow money from me, mostly because they were too lazy to bring their own. Some abused forgetting it sometimes as well. I don't seek to judge though, and therefore won't easily refuse one person and accept another. I don't mind lending money out though.

That's why I decided to ask some interest. Now people take their own money, and if they really need it they can still get it. It just solves the dilemma I was having.

However, note that I haven't asked any money yet this time. I have no problem doing something for free. In some cases it's simply only worth it if I make money on it though. I admit I'm looking forward to earning money right now though. But making a site that doesn't require too much from me (I'm simply rather busy) is something I'd do for free (although I wouldn't deny a payment :P). If it becomes a big project it's simply too costly in time to do for free though.

Basically, I pretty much just explained the money system.

And the risks-part I'm considering. I convinced myself that investing is good, but I don't know where to start yet.

Am I missing something according to you Draugnar?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Dec 13 UTC
Also, you're the one earning per month what I can only dream of earning per year, so look who's talking :)
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Dec 13 UTC
Your missing the point that charity can make you even more money through reputation. Your busy. We all are. But I still male time to do work for charitable organizations as it helps my business and gives something back to the community that supports me.
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Dec 13 UTC
You dream of earning 9 grand a year? Then how of you have this money to lend and invest?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
08 Dec 13 UTC
Saving, and, well, 'forward inheriting', by lack of a good word.

Basically, my grandparents give me the maximum amount you can give without taxation each year, so they don't have to pay taxes over it when inheriting.

I haven't really proven to myself I can make a living yet. Merely that I'm very good at saving.

I know people who get more than me and still have to save for a PS4.

I'm a minimalist compared to most. If not having brand clothes makes people think I'm poor, that's their problem. I just can't think of something I realistically want for myself, I'm just content. I actually worked on being content since it's such a nice way to live.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

And I do have a small side-job now for €6 per hour, but that's 1 hour per week :)

It's not like I make a lot of money, but almost all of it goes to my bank account.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Dec 13 UTC
So no one needs a site?

And I wasn't missing that point about charity by the way Draugnar.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Dec 13 UTC
Well, it just seemed like you were all about the "small risk, big profit" monetary motivation. When you truly love doing something, you'll do it for free. When it happens to also pay well, then it's a bonus. :-)
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Dec 13 UTC
But I love doing so many things :)

I'm not planning to do anything I don't like doing for money. But if I don't get paid for something I will do, I'm not sure if it will be a bigger priority than continuing my Baktria campaign in Rome 2, sleeping or school work. It could just disappear on this heap of things I could do.

That said though, I still simply need to make a site right now, so especially if you want something fairly basic I'll do it. If it requires a database or something else more complicated, I will have to see. I might still do it for free or ask money.

Also, having the reputation of doing everything for free might not be very profitable either, since there's no reason to pay :P

OK, Steephie - I have a challenge for you. I am planning to build a site to advertise my custom freehand carved pipes. I will, of course, do it myself when I have the time, but if you wanted to take the idea and run with it for your project, I plan to call it Draugnar's Den and it will eventually expand to include custom built outdoor furniture (Draugnarondacks) and be a site for the sophisticated man to review everything from haberdasheries to poker rooms to the latest classical and jazz albums, cigars, pipe tobaccos, luxury items like sedans and sports cars. Just do a graphical template with three to four pages. Make up the content and make certain it has some kind of navigation system. If I like the overall style when it is done, I'll toss a bill your way and use it as a template down the road.

Make certain I don't have to deal with buying copyrighted background images or anything though.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
10 Dec 13 UTC
I see... Thanks for the challenge!

Smoking pipes, right? It took me surprisingly long to figure that out :)

Basically, no database, no specific wishes other than 4 pages and Draugnar's Den as title, just make something cool about pipes? Will it be an online shop, or online reservations? So I make forms to fill in (surname, age, product you want reserved?), and you make the database behind it?

Could you make some pictures of your pipes? Otherwise the googled pictures could be misleading (I mean, I just figured out it's about smoking pipes, lolz...), and like you said there's copyrights too. Or am I supposed to use placeholders which you will replace later? I mean, I could put the right ones in already, right?

Or should it be a fairly neutral background with the merchandize shown on one page? I'm not entirely sure what you want to see obviously. Those are details though. I accept your challenge, assuming there's no database needed from me (I just found out the deadline for school is the 6th of January, so that might be a bit late to start learning a completely new language. If a database is needed, I don't know yet.).

But yeah, anything more specific would be nice, although I understand if you just want me to give it my twist. I just would have to figure out how I would like to see it and hope you like the same. That could be your goal though.

Also, 4 pages...
1 home page, one contact page, one reservations page, and one page showing actual merchandise? Do you want the concept of putting your stuff in a basket to reserve it? Or will numbers at the merchandise do, so they can reserve the numbers they want? Or a separate reservation page for each product?

Just some more questions you may or may not want to answer :)
steephie22 (182 D(S))
10 Dec 13 UTC
Also, are you still using the same e-mail? I could send you samples of what I have already so you can point out what you like and what you don't like.

Again though, only if you want. Client is king :)

It should be for selling pipes. I have no finished ones currently (all have been given to friends, although I'm working on one for myself) and it would be an ever changing inventory as each hand carved pipe is unique. So Google "freehand pipes" and pick some you like for the pictures.

I would envision a welcome page, a page with pipes for sale, a page with a list of tobaccos that links to a page with tobacco reviews for each, a shopping cart/checkout page (just collect the ordered pipes using javascript), and a review submission page linked to by each tobacco page. No need to actually save the review, just collect it and have a "submit review" button. Maybe have a checkbox at the bottom with some terms and conditions for review submission (something about no profanity and all reviews will be evaluated by management before being posted).

This is more about an appropriate visual style, so no functionality need to be in place behind the scenes. Just fake that part.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
10 Dec 13 UTC
The pictures would just be placeholders for the real ones though, correct?

Other than that, it should be doable, although I don't know how to collect the ordered pipes using javascript, but I can dig into that (good phrase?) and otherwise I bet you could do it yourself in a couple of minutes, so if I can't figure it out you can just pay me 50 cents less or something :)

And are pictures on Google never a problem with copyrights? I don't really know the details on that.
Draugnar (0 DX)
10 Dec 13 UTC
The placeholder pictures aren't a problem. What I meant by copyright is graphics you might use for menu buttons or backgrounds/borders. Things that are part of the style.

Wal-Mart Tasering Class Action Lawsuit
I saw a commercial from a legal firm looking for people that have been tasered by Wal-Mart security. After the incident on Black Friday it's about time that it happened. Depending upon the victim's health a taser can cause heart attacks and fracture bones especially since this "safe" weapon gets used multiple times.
