The only thing I noted was two seperate depths. The incidents of recording them.in the wildest were from 3000 to 7000 ft but the reported range in which they live was 1500 to 3000 ft.

@Draug Considering how much we don't know about that fish I wouldn't be surprised that the ranges are off.

I just looks like another example of how little we really know about the oceans.

Even if that's what krellin was referring to, I'm not sure it would constitute "idiotic reporting". Both those numbers come from different experts, so it's likely there's just some discrepancy based on our limited knowledge of the ocean.

IDIOTIC REPORTING: First ever recorded on film because of the great ocean depths they were seen at....and yet the author suggests these spawned myths of sea monsters among ancient mariners?

How could that be? Did ancient mariners have some sort of deep sea diving equipment we were unaware of?

Idiotic reporting because instead of just reporting a cool story about how we are seeing cool shit under the sea for the first time, the reporter has to <insert hype here> and add some ridiculous, speculative comment that is illogical at best. This comment is there purely for the purposes of sensationalism, not because it is a bit of fact he sought to include.

The same techniques are used in the vast majority of stories we read/hear these days. Our news and even the best of the reporters in print and broadcast media - once the bastions of "truth" and fact - now simply use fact as the vehicle in which they can spin opinion and sensationalism. For what purpose?

While I'm a firm capitalist, it was a sad, sad day in America when money, and not truth, became the motivating factor behind the press and reporting.

I'm sure at least some of the "deep sea monster" stories started when some kind of strange dead deep sea denizen washed up on the shore of some fishing village, or was pulled up in a net.

I read down the article a bit further, only to see one such beached oarfish.

Krell, the article says that they are presumed to be responsible for such myths, which tells me that either he's referencing someone else's theory or that he's actually a downright liar. Also note that the article gives specific examples of human sightings of such creatures, albeit in dead or nearly dead forms. This is merely the first live filming of one, not a discovery.

Your anger here makes no sense. This article is, like, an ideal piece of popular science journalism.

Article is fine. Krells is just gone off the deep end. Dead ones or barely living ones near the surface/washed ashore could easily contribute to early mariners "sea monster" tales. He is just pointing out a common theory of one source of "seamonsters".

That's it! Krellin is a semi-intelligent oarfish and took exception to being called a sea monster! That explains sooooooooo much!

Can't decide if krellin has finally truly lost it or if he's taking trolling lessons from Draug.
